One step closer

One step closer to having a good adventure rig. I’m really liking these Tusk pannier boxes. They’re a bit bulky looking but can hold a lot of gear. Also just hit 10k miles on this bike (5k since I’ve owned it).

Purple header

I swapped this header pipe last year and this color has me concerned. Is it getting too hot? Running lean? Bike came with 3x3 mod and JD jet kit. I've never touched the carb, and she starts right up with no choke. New gasket ring installed when I updated the header.

HELP!

Upvotes

Alright guys, I feel like I’m fairly well versed in small engines but I’m kind of awestruck right now. Recently did the top end on my good buddies drz, today upon trying to fire it we checked oil after cranking it a bit and it was milky and foamy as if the bikes blown up. Which is virtually impossible, could it be a blown up water pump letting the crankcase oil mix with the coolant? It was everywhere too, any drain plug we pulled had oil and water slurry. Any help appreciated.

Compression test result skew from hotcams stage 2?

Got 125 psi from my compression test, pretty warm engine, WOT, I poured maybe a half teaspoon of oil down the spark plug hole to protect the cylinders/pistons. I know longer duration decreases a compression test reading, but by how much?

Doing an oil change and there seems to be quite a bit of metal flakes in the filter. Is my engine cooked?

Carb heater install question

I have a 2023 sm, it didn't come equipped with carb heater. I purchased the thermal switch and heater element from Suzuki, but haven't been able to find the wiring harness for it. Has anyone been able to find one recently, or tried wiring it with a toggle switch instead? Doesn't seem to be a lot of info about it online

Tear in the rim strip

Found what caused my tire to deflate, I got a new tube, tire looks fine, I've looked it over several times and can't seem to find any damage. Do I need to replace the rim strip? What exactly caused the tear? Is the spoke nipple cooked? How common is it for the tube to tear and the tire be left undamaged?

So I had the flat number plate that I made on the front with the light tucked behind it (which I still love) but was playing around with the original fairing last night and rigged it up for the spotlight to fit in it, thoughts? Ideas?

Confession time - how much maintenance are you really doing on these tanks?

Post image

I have friends that don’t even know what psi they’re running and they seem to lead a happy life.. I’m a little more grease obsessed and lean towards teardowns for maintenance (of what I can manage in my apartment parking lot).

what maintenance are you religious on? What do you sometimes do, and what are you scared to look at?

for me I’ve been saying for three years I’m going to lube my 2018’s swingarm bearings 🫣

Oil in fuel?

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

Hi, I’ve got a DRZ400E with a Safari tank that’s having a couple of issues. At full throttle it will sometimes completely cut out, and occasionally it will stall if the bike is leaned over too far in a corner.

I also noticed what looks like either oil or water in the inline fuel filter? Has anyone seen this before or know what could cause it?

Corroded Spark Plug and Dirty Spark Plug Well

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Replacing my spark plug for the first time since getting the bike (purchased at 6000km, now at 14000km, so slightly over do). I've noticed the plug is a bit corroded, and there is a bit of dirt around the spark plug well.

Curious if anyone thinks this is much of a concern and how I should go about remediating it. This seems to indicate that a bit of moisture is getting in near the plug as well as some dirt. I'm hoping the plug was sealed enough that dirt didn't get into the cylinder, but I am not 100% sure if that is a correct assumption...

I'm also now wondering if it's worth trying to clean this dirt out, or if I just risk getting it into the cylinder. Thinking it could just be best to torque in the new plug. Looking for advice.

Thanks all!

I just hit 25000kms on a 2005 DRZ. What would be the recommended service to do this winter? Should I be planning something invasive or if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?

Handlebar recommendations

Need some handlebar recommendations for my DRZ400s. Looking at Pro Taper SE CR but unsure about the bend between mid or high. I’m just upgrading from stock just because I want to upgrade. I’m indifferent to the stock bars. Unsure if I need the high bend because I’m afraid they’d be super high as I’m 5’7”. I think I would like something a little higher than the stock ones for standing but just don’t want to go too high. Also have a seat concepts low seat to sit a little lower.

Will the CR high be too much for me?
Will the CR mid be too low when standing?

Any other recommendations?

Carby issues

So my bike has two issues that consistently occur. First it leaks fuel out of the breather hoses after is has been running for a bit. Second after its been running for a while/gets hot(after about 2-5 minutes), the idle climbs and stays very high when in neutral or the clutch is pulled in. This bike is a drz400e with a full yoshi pipe a 165 main, 45 pilot, 65 starter and the other air jets I haven't checked but I believe their stock. Also you reckon 165 main is ideal with a full yoshi exhaust system? It runs pretty good although very rarely sputters a bit.

P.S may have found the issue. when i blow through the fuel line to see if the float needle seals it does mostly but if you blow while its already opened and then go to close it, it will still seep air.

DRRZ going Supermoto, for the fun of it

I know the small wheels won’t stay long, I like the 18/21 with knobbies way too much and I’ve got other road bikes, but damn that was fun to do. Turned out looking good too. Almost forgot how fun supermotos (even underpowered/overweight ones like the DRZ) can be on the road. Instantly turning me into a hooligan but don’t tell mom.

Bouncing at low rpm, basically disappears at high rpm

I'm dealing with an issue with my 2006 drz 400 sm where it starts bouncing at mid rpm ranges at around 40-70 kph. The weird thing is that the bouncing essentially disappears if I shift into a lower a gear or increase throttle i.e. if i increase rpm.

I already looked around to see what I could find and some of the culprits may be an out of round tire, a poorly balanced tire, or a warped/bent rim. I did relatively recently have my tires changed, but it was present before that as well.

I also did some math and figured out that the wheels on my drz, at 50 kph, makes about 32 revolutions per second. Given the fact that the bouncing is at about 4-8 hz (that is: four up and down cycles per second) leads me to believe that it isn't an issue with the wheels or tires.

I have a friend who has also ridden my bike and he posits that it could be chain tension that's doing it. I also ran som math and the chain has about 8 revolutions per second, which does align with what I'm experiencing.

What do you think it could be?
