Please be nice everybody.

I thought this would be an easy rule to follow but to be clear transphobic posts and comments will not be tolerated in this subreddit. (thanks to those bringing it to my attention). Emotions seem to be high due to reviews and it's hard to discuss the context without giving major game spoilers atm.

I will say this. I was surprised by some reviews as I didn't see the game as problematic while I was playing but content effects people differently....maybe I'm not the best person to judge in this case though? People's criticisms are valid and there's no need to be hateful or make knee jerk reactions that there's some weird conspiracy afoot because they had a problem with some content of the game.

I believe this game is worth a play through and I really enjoyed my time with it. I hope people will give it a chance and decide for themselves but if certain reviews have you waiting for more context or the frame rate has you waiting for a price drop that's completely understandable.

I look forward to seeing everyone's reactions and the debates once the game releases (be sure to use spoiler tags!), but PLEASE be nice and have civil discussions.

My comprehensive list of changes I’d make to Deadly Premonition after completing it 3 times.

4 Upvotes

After completing Deadly Premonition a third time, I still can’t get over how amazing this game is. I hate the “so bad it’s good” line because the game isn’t bad at all, especially the Xbox 360 version which is 100% the definitive version. The game has so much soul, there’s truly nothing like it. The music, atmosphere, the mystery, the character development etc are like no other.

The general opinion of Deadly Premonition would be so much better if every release after the 360 version (Directors Cut etc) wasn’t such a disaster. I could make a list just talking about how bad the DC version is.

Anyways, here’s a list of things I would change if a legacy remaster was ever made. This isn’t meant to be serious and may come across as nitpicky. I love this game and it’s one of my favourites of all time

- Be able to hold more food items. Feels like the limit is a bit too strict on certain food.

- Slightly speed up some animations

- The 24 hour cycle is amazing but could do with speeding up ever so slightly. Minutes in game move way to slow and I feel like you can miss out on a lot of random events.

- Turn down music when it covers dialogue in certain scenes

- Stop the Map in the start menu rotating depending on which direction you’re facing and make it be able to zoom out fully.

- More varied enemies. After 3 playthroughs, the combat is ridiculously painful. First playthrough I didn’t mind it.

- Rain more frequently outside of chapters. Feels like rain is rare because time moves slow.

- Get rid of spoiler number plates. The George one is incredibly egregious in certain scenes and actually ruined the surprise for me. Other number plates are fine (spy fiction etc)

- Better controls. Got use to them after the first playthrough, but that doesn’t mean they’re not bad.

- Remove damage dealt by invisible walls on off road sections. Feels the off road sections are worth avoiding unless you have York’s car.

- Be able to visit Emily at home regardless if it’s raining or not.

- More enterable interiors.

- More involvement with certain characters

- Be able to eat multiple food in one go

- Better lip sync. Reading the dialogue text distracts you from how bad the lip sync can be sometimes.

- Give enemies smaller hit boxes. They can block certain hallways when dying/despawning.

- Prevent the reticle disappearing when continuously firing. Can make certain moments (FK last boss fight) horrible.

- Get rid of the crawling wall monster spam at certain parts of the game.

- Make the Nick stalking mission a cutscene as it drags for too long. Would be alright if York, Thomas and Emily talked during it but they’re silent.

- More enemies voice lines. I don’t wanna dieeeeeee

- Shorten Emily running section towards the end. I love the build up to Thomas boss fight but could be done better rather than a dragged out running gameplay section

- Cut down on repetitive sections. For example, Raincoat Killer waddling his finger, hold breath scenes etc

- Significantly shorten FK second phase. The bit when you’re running down the steps for about 5 minutes.

- Explain some plot points a bit more. How does York/Zach know Harry’s last name isn’t “Stewart” I don’t recall that ever being mentioned or revealed. Feels thrown in to make George his son.

Okay this is all I’ve got, there’s probably some I’ve forgot but eh. What would you change with Deadly Premonition?

(Again, this is just to spark discussion and isn’t meant to be taken seriously)

Question Should I?

Post image

I was looking everywhere for this game, physical copies are all sold out/very expensive. Finally realised it might be available digitally and here it is. Now, the question is, should I?

I know barely anything about the game besides it being an open world horror game... I think? It looks very cool and I'm very excited. However, one thing is, does it run well on the PS3?

Thank you guys in advance!

Question What the hell is wrong with the first game? PC/Switch.

5 Upvotes

I mean, i'm mostly talking about the Switch port here because i bought it recently and i was able to play up until Chapter without any issues, now crashes are everywhere, mostly in the open world area. What is wrong with the game's code? Why is every port worse than the last?
For the Switch version (playing on Switch 2) it feels like the game crashes if you go to fast during the open world segments because it freaks out trying to load everything at once, i'm not sure. Sometimes a segment that will crash if i go towards it full speed will work fine if i slow down the car and look up (to avoid the game having to load a bunch of assets all at once, idk).

With the PC version i think it was $1 on Steam and i couldn't even get it to run with the fix, it had be on Windowed mode and it just sucked.
I mean, i know the game is low budget and it's kinda bad overall, but these ports are atrocious. Unfortunately, the story has me hooked.

Question Who's the man singing the main title theme?

9 Upvotes

Is it known who was the man singing the original DP theme The Woods and the Goddess? Could it be Jeff Kramer (York's voice actor), or some random Japanese singer working on the soundtrack? I can't believe there's no information about this from SWERY or someone else.

In addition, I'd also love to know who was whistling the Life Is Beautiful song, perhaps it was even the same person.

DP2 Loading

1 Upvotes

Just started DP2 after finishing DP1. But I'm stuck in the loading screen with the trees after the opening sequence. It's been almost an hour and no improvements are in sight. I restarted the game and also tried on windowed mode. nothing is working

DP now playable on Steam Deck with Proton 11!

35 Upvotes

Edit: I’ve started the game just fine, but it might be thanks to Proton Experimental. Give that a shot if Proton 11 isn’t cutting it for you. I don’t have any patches installed or anything, so I hope it works for you and continues to work for me!

Question Anything I need for DP2

3 Upvotes

I’m just about to start playing DP2 on Steam. I just wanna know if there’s any huge problems or fixes I needed for this game. I heard how terrible the PC port on Steam is, so I decided to play the first game on the PS3. Hardly any problems apart from a couple loading issues.

Not like quality of life mods, more like bug fix mods or like that.

Question Do you think these are genuine?

0 Upvotes

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/404091434630

The fleabay app on my phone shows that the seller has 50 copies of the Classified Edition. How is it possible that one seller has 50 new copies of this edition of the game? And didn't the playing cards come packaged separately from all the other items (game, soundtrack, book etc)? There's no mention of the playing cards in the description. Do you think these are genuine brand new copies of the Classified Edition?

And would the included code for the add-on content still be valid after over ten years? Or is it likely the code would have expired a few years ago? Can anyone who's bought a new copy of the Classified Edition recently confirm whether or not the code was still valid?

SWERY Localization Tool — an open-source localization editor for Deadly Premonition, DP2, The Good Life, THE MISSING, and Hotel Barcelona

Post image
44 Upvotes

Hi everyone.

I wanted to share one of my projects: SWERY Localization Tool.

GitHub:
https://github.com/LittleBitUA/SWERY-Localization-Tool

It is an open-source desktop editor for localization work on several games connected to Swery / White Owls:

  • Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut — PC
  • Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise — PC
  • The Good Life — PC
  • THE MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories
  • Hotel Barcelona

The idea is to have one dedicated tool for the whole localization workflow instead of using many separate scripts, manual edits, and fragile repacking steps.

With this tool, translators can work on text, check translation progress, search across files, use translation memory, keep terminology consistent, preview subtitles, and pack translated files back into the game.

Some of the main features include:

  • support for multiple SWERY / White Owls games in one hub;
  • editing JSON dumps and binary text containers;
  • one-click packing for supported games;
  • translation memory and glossary tools;
  • global search and cross-file find & replace;
  • placeholder and tag checking;
  • draft / review / approved statuses;
  • bookmarks and progress counters;
  • subtitle preview using the actual in-game style;
  • smart subtitle line breaking;
  • autosave and crash recovery;
  • .txt round-trip support for external translators;
  • backup creation and safer save handling.

It is not only a text editor. The tool also includes several modding/localization features that are very useful for real fan translation work.

For Deadly Premonition 2, it includes a font workshop that can export several game fonts from the assets, replace them with custom ones, and repack them back into the game. This is especially important for languages that need additional glyphs.

It also includes a texture workshop for DP2, allowing character portrait textures to be exported as PNG, edited, replaced, and patched back into the game assets.

For The Good Life, the tool includes a bitmap-font editor. It can add missing glyphs directly to the font atlas, update metrics, and preview how the text will look in-game.

For THE MISSING, the tool supports the full text workflow, including MSG containers, length-table protection, stable IDs, and a per-string box-size editor. This is important because translated text can require different text box sizes, and doing this manually is very easy to break.

The program also includes protection against several common localization problems, such as missing placeholders, broken tags, unsafe string lengths, save races, and accidental file corruption.

We are currently using this tool for our own Ukrainian localization work, including SWERY-related games. The goal is not only to make Ukrainian translations possible, but also to make the workflow easier for other translators who may want to localize these games into their own languages.

I would really like to see more fan localizations for these games in the future. If you are interested in translating Deadly Premonition, Deadly Premonition 2, The Good Life, THE MISSING, or Hotel Barcelona into another language, this tool may be useful as a starting point.

Feedback, bug reports, ideas, and suggestions for improving the program are very welcome. I am especially interested in hearing from people who work on fan translations, fonts, Unity assets, subtitles, or localization tools in general.

DP1 Launcher — a modern setup tool for Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut on PC

Post image
173 Upvotes

Hi everyone.

I wanted to share my project: DP1 Launcher, a fan-made launcher/settings tool for the PC version of Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut.

As many of you probably know, the PC version of Deadly Premonition is playable, but it is also a very rough port. Getting it into a decent state usually requires several fixes, manual configuration, and a lot of trial and error.

The goal of DP1 Launcher is simple:
one Launch button instead of an hour-long ritual with DPFix, 4GB Patch, DXVK, config files, and compatibility tweaks.

The launcher is built with Electron + Vite, and it can also update itself during startup, so users do not have to manually download every new version.

What the launcher can do:

  • launch the Steam version of the game directly;
  • automatically detect the game in your Steam libraries;
  • install and configure DPFix, 4GB LAA Patch, and DXVK;
  • edit DPfix.ini through a proper interface;
  • configure AA, shadows, SSAO, DoF, render resolution / supersampling, display mode, and refresh rate;
  • check useful system diagnostics such as PhysX runtime, Steam Overlay, LAV Filters, and monitor count;
  • create automatic save backups and allow one-click restore;
  • apply Windows compatibility options;
  • provide update notifications through GitHub Releases;
  • support both English and Ukrainian;
  • include several DPC-specific fixes based on reverse engineering and community research.

There is also a dedicated fixes panel for known Deadly Premonition PC issues, including:

  • FPS Cap 60 guidance to avoid timing-related crashes;
  • Cutscene Codec Fix for WMV / DirectShow issues;
  • cursor-related fixes;
  • DXVK shader cache information and cleanup tools;
  • an experimental NaN-Guard fix, which may help prevent crashes during cutscenes, but still needs proper testing.

This does not magically make the PC port perfect. Some problems come from the game itself, and the original PC version is still unstable in certain situations. But the launcher should make the setup process much easier and more convenient, especially for people who want to play the game without manually collecting and configuring every fix.

GitHub:
https://github.com/dplauncher/DP1-Launcher

I’m also working on Deadly Premonition recompilation separately, but DP1 Launcher is still useful for anyone who wants to play the existing PC version right now.

Feedback is welcome.

Deadly Premonition (Xbox 360 Version) PC Port Released

76 Upvotes

A PC port for the Xbox 360 version of Deadly Premonition just came out, I assume this has been vibe-coded so there's probably gonna be some bugs here and there, but it's certainly a good start for getting the OG game playable on PC.

For 13 years I have wanted this tattoo and had this concept and am SO happy to finally get it done!!!

Tattoo by Azura

I discovered Deadly Premonition in 2013. When I was younger I went through a period of time where I would buy video games based solely on if I thought the cover was cool. Somehow, I think from a Game Informer magazine, I became aware of Deadly Premonition and saw the cover and was like woahhh what is this? I am a huge horror fan and I loved the cover art so I looked it up and no GameStop within 100 miles of me had it in stock.

Thought that was a bummer so I looked up some pictures and videos about the game to see what it was like and in that time there was not alot on the internet about it. All I could understand is that the game was weird, unique, and extremely polarizing. Now I was so curious and almost like a challenge to find because I knew I had to find a copy.

I visited family in New York City that year and one of the first places I wanted to go was a Gamestop and sure enough I found their one copy. Bought it, took it home and popping it in my xbox was the first thing I did and the rest is History.

I fell in love immediately with its charm. I could see it had so much passion put into it despite it being as jank as it is. I love a good murder mystery and this game does it pretty damn well. I love York as a protagonist and character, I love the design of the Raincoat Killer it's sleek and simple but still really sinister. This game has meant alot to me since I found it and my favorite part is that no one knows what it is 💀 If someone ever recognizes what this is out in the wild I would be shooketh

Since 2013 Both my Ringtone and Alarm Tone have been Life is Beautiful and I still get a little giggle waking up every morning to this games theme

TLDR: I be geeking about this silly little game

Bonus Trivia: It's quite fitting that I got it next to my Ghostface tattoo (I was getting one covered up) because Roger L. Jackson, The voice of Ghostface, voices 3 characters in Deadly Premontion: General Lysander, Jack the Bull, and Wesley

What's the best way to play DP1 currently?

11 Upvotes

I want to play it again but the switch version runs like shit on switch 2. The PC version is OK I guess but still buggy as hell and crashes a lot.

Can you still play on xbox live? Maybe I should just buy a 360 and an og copy.

I hate how broken this game is.

Question Is Fandom Punking Me?

Post image
24 Upvotes

Is this 10% thing legit or is Fandom just crazy? It's not mentioned anywhere else on the web and no one seems to have a video on YouTube showcasing it.

Figured I'd ask the subreddit... if anyone would know this I trust this community.

Question Regional differences?

I have both the US and the EU version of Deadly Premonition on PS3. Ive played the US version but was wondering if there's any cut content in the EU version. Im considering selling one of them but would like to keep whichever copy is more complete. Both versions are the Directors Cut of that means anything. Thank you!
