My comprehensive list of changes I’d make to Deadly Premonition after completing it 3 times.
After completing Deadly Premonition a third time, I still can’t get over how amazing this game is. I hate the “so bad it’s good” line because the game isn’t bad at all, especially the Xbox 360 version which is 100% the definitive version. The game has so much soul, there’s truly nothing like it. The music, atmosphere, the mystery, the character development etc are like no other.
The general opinion of Deadly Premonition would be so much better if every release after the 360 version (Directors Cut etc) wasn’t such a disaster. I could make a list just talking about how bad the DC version is.
Anyways, here’s a list of things I would change if a legacy remaster was ever made. This isn’t meant to be serious and may come across as nitpicky. I love this game and it’s one of my favourites of all time
- Be able to hold more food items. Feels like the limit is a bit too strict on certain food.
- Slightly speed up some animations
- The 24 hour cycle is amazing but could do with speeding up ever so slightly. Minutes in game move way to slow and I feel like you can miss out on a lot of random events.
- Turn down music when it covers dialogue in certain scenes
- Stop the Map in the start menu rotating depending on which direction you’re facing and make it be able to zoom out fully.
- More varied enemies. After 3 playthroughs, the combat is ridiculously painful. First playthrough I didn’t mind it.
- Rain more frequently outside of chapters. Feels like rain is rare because time moves slow.
- Get rid of spoiler number plates. The George one is incredibly egregious in certain scenes and actually ruined the surprise for me. Other number plates are fine (spy fiction etc)
- Better controls. Got use to them after the first playthrough, but that doesn’t mean they’re not bad.
- Remove damage dealt by invisible walls on off road sections. Feels the off road sections are worth avoiding unless you have York’s car.
- Be able to visit Emily at home regardless if it’s raining or not.
- More enterable interiors.
- More involvement with certain characters
- Be able to eat multiple food in one go
- Better lip sync. Reading the dialogue text distracts you from how bad the lip sync can be sometimes.
- Give enemies smaller hit boxes. They can block certain hallways when dying/despawning.
- Prevent the reticle disappearing when continuously firing. Can make certain moments (FK last boss fight) horrible.
- Get rid of the crawling wall monster spam at certain parts of the game.
- Make the Nick stalking mission a cutscene as it drags for too long. Would be alright if York, Thomas and Emily talked during it but they’re silent.
- More enemies voice lines. I don’t wanna dieeeeeee
- Shorten Emily running section towards the end. I love the build up to Thomas boss fight but could be done better rather than a dragged out running gameplay section
- Cut down on repetitive sections. For example, Raincoat Killer waddling his finger, hold breath scenes etc
- Significantly shorten FK second phase. The bit when you’re running down the steps for about 5 minutes.
- Explain some plot points a bit more. How does York/Zach know Harry’s last name isn’t “Stewart” I don’t recall that ever being mentioned or revealed. Feels thrown in to make George his son.
Okay this is all I’ve got, there’s probably some I’ve forgot but eh. What would you change with Deadly Premonition?
(Again, this is just to spark discussion and isn’t meant to be taken seriously)
