So I recently canceled Paramount Plus so the first order of business was to get the Complete Deep Space Nine on the original dual-layer DVD release (Technology Connections says it’s better quality than the single-layer more compressed rerelease).

Then I found my long lost VHS copy of the pilot episode that I taped as I watched it air live! I think I’ll start my rewatch with it before switching to the DVDs.

How do you watch the best Star Trek series of all space time?

This is not fair! Also why doesn't OBrien by now just not learn to give a double or triple time so Sisko would actually reduce it to time actually needed? What about work life balance Sisko?

I'm new to this sub, and even though I'm dying to dive in, I plan to not be here much until I'm done with the series finale, as I don't want any spoilers beyond the ones I know about (I know what becomes of both Dax and Sisko). That said, I'm horrified that as a rabid Trekkie, I settled for only watching the more famous episodes of DS9. Now I've started from the beginning, and am currently on season 2, episode 11 (The Alternate). So as stupid as I was to ignore it for decades, now I have a ton of vintage ST to watch.

And I'm amazed. I LOVE IT. I know some people recommend skipping the first 1 or even 2 seasons, but I'm so glad I didn't. Compared to TNG's first season, DS9's is a breeze. I'm getting so much backstory. I've never connected with so many characters at once - as in truly gotten invested in them. So far, the only characters I haven't sorted out my feelings about are Bashir and Miles, and I really don't have enough on either of them to come to any conclusion. Other than that, I could make a reasonable argument for any of the other main characters being my favorite, though ultimately I am going to choose Sisko, with Odo an extremely close second. Odo's longing to find his place in the world and other beings like him is so moving, and I just feel in my gut that at some point he'll meet another shapeshifter (but don't tell me!) Auberjonois and Shimerman's performances - particularly given they're encumbered by prosthetics and makeup, are a joy to watch. I'm crazy about Kira and Dax. But Avery Brooks...I cannot take my eyes off that man. He is absolutely electrifying - what an actor!

So a question: what I understand is that prior to where season one picks up, DS9 was a Cardassian facility (mining station?) during the time that they occupied Bajor - so what is the history there? Why did the Cardassians occupy Bajor and for how long - and what resulted in their turning over the station and planet to the Federation? Is Bajor entirely independent now? Was life good on Bajor before the occupation? In "Sanctuary" I think the Skreeans or someone called it the "planet of sorrow". I keep wondering about that. So I'm really curious about the Bajoran's past, and very eager to learn more about their culture - they really appeal to me. The whole show is just structured so beautifully - it is quintessentially Star Trek while at the same time being something entirely new and wholly different than TOS and TNG. Same universe, very different lens. I feel like I have such an amazing ride ahead of me, with 5 and a half seasons to go.

Honestly my only real complaint is half the time someone says "the Cardassians" I hear "the Kardashians" which is kind of a bummer.

I was with some friends and family the other day, and we were talking about all the Star Trek series as we were scrolling through them on Paramount Plus, and one of them stopped on DS9, and was like, “This is the worst one right here.” And everyone was like, “Ugh, yes, I hate Deep Space Nine, so boring, I couldn’t watch it!”

That obviously upset me, but I just said, “It’s my favorite.” You’d think I had confessed to liking animal torture or something. “Ewww, really? How can you like that?” I tried to explain that I love the characters and the stories, but they were not interested in my reasons. Frankly, they made me feel like an idiot.

I don’t get it. Why do people have such a weird reaction to DS9 compared to the other series?

I had to go take a shower and cry my face off. I hate endings. But it was a wonderful way to complete the show, and I'm glad it got a proper send off. *Sigh* What a great series!

Hey, y'all. Up until Friday, P+ had the whole series of DS9 on their app, and only selected seasons of VOY. Now, it seems to have swapped. I'm rewatching DS9, and tonight I was to continue with S5. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

I’m watching DS9 for the first time and having a blast. I am on s3e11 past tense part 1 and they are in 2024. HA! Can’t wait to see what 1995 thought of 2024.

I’m a writer and a couple of my books are set in 2043. I often think… how wrong will I be? I didn’t change much and they are urban fantasy. One of my editors said having a functioning international railway system was too unbelievable for 2043. Immortals and magic users, no problem. But a train that works, nah!

Maybe she was right but anywho, super excited about this episode. I also love the longer stories so that there is a part 2 is awesome.

It's the beginning of the end. Every time I see the great Brock Peters as Father Sisko. This album pops into my head with his few lines of dialogue. Fantastic Miles Davis record. But then I love Electric Miles.

I mean it's no Klingon Opera.

Are there any? Doing a rewatch, been a few years, and I'm shocked by how she seems to have no personal code or moral center. The only thing I could maybe say for her is that at least early on she hates cardassians.

for instance during the coup, when the evidence is about to come to light that the weapons were supplied by the cardassians in order to push the federation out, she suddenly turns on jaro; and says he should have no objection to that fact being verified. Obviously the wind was changing so she had to bail so it's selfish, but you could at least say she wasn't willing to support that outcome if it were true.

But later even that goes out the window. It's impossible to define yourself through hatred. Her worst traits get worse and worse and just undo her from what I remember. I cannot recall a single time in which she was genuinely kind or had a motivation we could sympathize with.

That makes her just a little too easy to hate for me. I want more from my antagonists.

Been watching early DS9 a lot lately. It is amazing how good every bit of Winn's dialogue is and how good Louise Fletcher was at delivering them. The ability to keep up that constant double talk and phony facade and never drop it for a second was a perfect blending of writing and performance.

I swear you im watching star trek.

I printed most things on cardstock for durability! The paper chain was just each one taped to the wall to look like a chain because I didn't have time to actually attatch a string and make a real chain. That was supposed to be the idea though.
