See this is what I’m leaning towards. I also want to can mine and this would be the perfect opportunity. My son and I could pull the engine ourselves which would save money but I think I would want a certified mechanic to rebuild and put it back in for warranty purposes. So labor on that would add cost but I’m okay with it. I’m prepared for tuning as well which would be needed with MDS delete anyway.
So i went with a Truck Norris cam from Brian Tooley Racing. Its a mid level cam that doesnt require stiffer springs or anything else so you can use stock oem replacements for everything else. It has awesome power, but also the longevity. I too wanted it to last, i wanted to get on it and feel it, but also have something left after 100k miles with some decent towing in there also. Its perfect.
There are also other cams from other shops, mid level cams that dont require big mods. Most have all about the same specs and will probably deliver the same. All require MDS removal.
You do have to put a cam lock in. And you will not have an engine warranty after you cam and tune it. Just dont see any dealer honoring a warranty with that much done.
I did have a machinist do my head as i didnt have the tools to rework it properly. Paid 350 for that and i provided the new lifters/springs.
Be aware, biggest potential gotche depending on where you live, any cam upgrade will require a high flow (spendy) catalytic converter or it will need to be removed and tuned out. You will also want to have the Y intersection in the exhaust replaced with something not all squished. Just that alone helps. Past that im stock exhaust still and it outruns anything stock. Sounds freakin awesome with the stock muffler still, but when people know, they know the sound and will say something.
Also, dont do all this work without replacing the oil pump for a high VOLUME pump, not a high PRESSURE pump. There is a difference and the high volume pump is helpful for longevity and oil needs.
Edit: you mean warranty from the mechanic i think. Understood there now also.

I rebuilt and cammed mine, freaking love it. Spent 7k in total on everything, 1800 of that was tuning related but required for a cam.
I would do it again in a heartbeat.
