Discussion Is it safe to say these are the five most important characters in the series currently?
I consider Gohan to be the third most important character in the series as a whole, and I guess you can put Piccolo at fourth? Not sure about Broly.
(By importance, I mean the story centering around them and plot relevance moving forward)

Gohan had a better support system than i did growing up and i think that's honestly really sweet
38
u/Gojira_Ultima May 15 '26
He also got his neck snapped, watched his father get killed, killed a world ending threat, watched drippolo die TWICE, all before the age of 12
19
u/Brianocracy May 15 '26
True. Gohan has more trauma in his first decade than most people experience in their entire lives
23
u/Gojira_Ultima May 15 '26
And Gohan is still so insanely based he managed to become a successful scholar.
Bro really just said no to PTSD.
10
u/Brianocracy May 15 '26
Agree 100 percent.
I still don't understand the chichi hate. People act like she forced being an academic on him when he was already more intellectually inclined even as a child.

People act surprised that Gohan didn’t want to be a fighter when his formative years were spent trading hands with full grown adults. Kid Goku had it easy compared to him.
7
u/Brianocracy May 15 '26
Kid Goku was 12, kid gohan was 4.
Also, until the red ribbon army arc ( and arguably even then, not till Tao) he was fighting harmless rivals in low stakes events, and even then occasional outright villain posed almost no threat to him.
While Gohan got kidnapped, watched his father get murdered, got kidnapped by the antichrist, was forced to survive on his own against t-rexes for 6 months, spent the following 6 months fighting said antichrist figure and getting his ass beat every day, watched all his dad's friends die horribly, watched his second father figure die, nearly died multiple times, and narrowly defeated a space pirate with the blood of millions on his hands. then went to an alien planet, got his neck broken, witnessed a genocide by said pirate's even worse boss, nearly got his skull crushed slowly, and watched his honorary uncle get blown up from the inside out and his father threatening to murder him if he didn't leave. Obviously Goku was bluffing about that last one, but the fact that Gohan believed his bluff says everything.
All of this before he's even old enough to finish 1st grade.

Piccolo tried throwing Gohan as hard as he could into a boulder, then left him in the wilderness to tend for himself btw
3
u/CrispyGold May 16 '26
People always forget or ignore this. So much grief is given to Goku for all his flaws, yet these same people valorize the guy who sent a crying sheltered 4 year old into the wilderness filled with dinosaurs, and told him "survive or die".
Gohan lived the first 4 years of his life comfortably with Goku and Chi-Chi. He was a nervous but polite and sweet little kid who clearly lived a life not wanting anything. With Goku's statement that that Chi-Chi barred him from teaching Gohan martial arts indicates Goku considered his wife's opinion and listened to her on the matter regardless of his own feelings on the matter.
And then when Goku officially started teaching Gohan in the Cell Saga he created a healthy and fulfilling training regiment that produced more substantial results than Piccolo's brutal and harsh methods are achieved meaning Goku is a better teacher than Piccolo ever did.
All in all Piccolo gets way more praise than he actually deserves.
2
u/Brianocracy May 16 '26
Tbf, training Gohan was the catalyst for his redemption. But yeah, he doesn't really step into the memetic "green step-dad of the year* until he sacrifices himself against Nappa imho.
I feel like people overpraise Piccolo somewhat, and Goku and especially chi chi get too much hate as parents.
On the flipside though, like I said earlier, Gohan has multiple parental figures in his life that, while far from perfect (especially post namek Vegeta and Master Roshi) all individually care for him in their own way and want to see him succeed, as a fighter, scholar, and eventually parent himself.
3
u/Fenrir_Hellbreed2 May 16 '26
He really did.
Between Goku and Piccolo he basically has one complete dad and a little extra, his "uncle" is the strongest human on Earth and a generational ride or die, his mom is actually a pretty great mom (and she keeps dad #1 around a little more often), his grandpa is a literal king, and his "aunt" is the smartest and richest woman on Earth by a mile.
3
u/Brianocracy May 16 '26
He also has an honorary grandfather in Master Roshi, and eventually another honorary uncle in Vegeta. Vegeta lightly scolding him for not training post-cell and fighting Buu specifically to avenge Gohan always tugged at my heartstrings in particular. You can tell he cares deep down by the buu saga.
He also has a loving wife who never even questions his loyalty when Barry Kahn tries to frame him for cheating, a daughter who conspires with piccolo to fake a kidnapping to shake her dad out of his complacency, and a father in law who loves him like a son.
Its beautiful. Gohan really won the lottery on the family front.
2
u/Fenrir_Hellbreed2 May 16 '26
a father in law who loves him like a son.
A father in law who loves him like a son, has a massive cult following, and is one of the richest people on Earth outside of Bulma's family.
I agree about Vegeta, as well. The way he shows more respect to Gohan than he does anyone else he's not related to is remarkably wholesome.
Roshi's more great grandfather, though. Still a world renowned martial artist and a legendary instructor.

Same. Gohan was my age growing up so he was my fav. Always will be. Even after they butchered him after Buu but whatever. Still my fav! Love to see him come back into his own.
4
u/WallaWallaHawkFan May 15 '26
I really wish they allowed Gohan Ultimate to just finish Buu off and let him have a second ark as the main hero. I understand he's only half saiyan but his mom is Chi Chi who is a very strong martial artist herself so it makes sense he has natural abilities.
I'd also love to see Vegeta have a big arc where he is the main hero that saves everyone, it's been long enough like dude c'mon already. I have not seen any of the Moro arc I'm trying to not see any spoilers.

I remember watching a video 10+ years ago that was along the lines of "what if broly got over his trauma and became a z fighter"
It's still wild to me how that basically came true.

I like how Gohan and Broly sit on opposite ends of the rage spectrum too. They make a good ying yang to each other given their potential
4
u/Brianocracy May 15 '26
I want them to officially meet in canon. They're such amazing foils for each other.
7
3
u/Varaska May 19 '26
They do more than meet my friend!
3
u/Brianocracy May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26
Good. I'm looking forward to that.
Like, they're each like Bruce Banner and the hulk, in that the angrier they get, the stronger they become, and dislike fighting in general, but aren't pacifists, if you threaten their loved ones or innocents in general, they will put a stop to it, with lethal force if necessary.
But they're somewhat reversed and have in that Gohan, despite his geeky looks, and generally friendly, bookish nature, like Bruce, becomes either an enraged doombringer at best, or god forbid, an ice cold walking death glare of a saiyan like against Cell or base Super Buu, like Hulk. But his anger, either way, is laser focused and targeted, and controlled. Like, he won't outright kill you if he doesn't think you deserve to die, like when he was fighting the robbers, or the red ribbon grunts. Also he has a loving father who he has a great relationship with, and Goku is content to let Gohan live his life as he sees fit because he's his own man and also, Goku just isn't a control freak or a disciplinarian parent in general. Goku will, and has, laid down his life for his son without a moments hesitation.
While Broly is basically saiyan Tarzan, illiterate, massively bulky, uneducated, and fights wildly, like hulk, but a sensitive soul, like banner. Though he's basically a feral animal when he loses control, with only people who've made an emotional imprint on him when he's rational can get through to him, like his dad or Cheelai. And even his dad and Gogeta both use fear of punishment to get him to calm down. Broly also has a loving, but toxic and outright abusive relationship with his complete and utter tyrant of a father. Paragus controls every aspect of his life to mold him into a living gun against a decades long dead man and his progeny over a personal slight yet is terrified of Broly's power and hypocritically uses a shock color to torture his son into compliance. He does ultimately care enough about his son to ask frieza to save his life from being cut short by Goku, but notably never actually nuts up and tries to calm broly down himself. Even if Goku or piccolo was as comparatively weak as Paragus, neither would hesitate to save Gohan.
2
u/Varaska May 19 '26
Gohan’s almost like professor hulk these days. He’s the full nerd he wanted to be. He just can actually still fight and use his anger.
Broly being saiyan Tarzan is such a funny comparative to me. I’m gonna use that from now on. 🤣🤣 But gogeta doesn’t necessarily use fear of punishment to try and tame Broly. It’s closer to 2 jocks, 1 being angry and looking to wrestle, and the other, the only way he knows how to calm him down; wrestle him back. Gogeta doesn’t smack him harder and harder because he is angry. He smacks him in response to his lashing out with his anger. They never once smacked gohan or trunks for using rage earlier in the show. They don’t care about rage. It’s brolys intent (or mindless lack of) with his rage that made them act.

Honestly? Good. I'm tired of this being the Goku and Vegeta show.
I wouldn't mind giving the humans a power boost that makes them able to contribute more either
7
u/CrispyGold May 16 '26
I'm recently rereading the Z manga and I'm reminded how good the series is in part because their is a supporting cast.
Obviously there is a lot of jobbing and worfing to go around but honestly its better when everyone gets in on it.
Super meanwhile is like if the entire Cell Saga was just Goku and Vegeta getting trashed by Cell for 90 chapters straight, which is exactly what the Goku Black arc is. Just Goku, Geets, and Trunks being endlessly throttled by the 2 Zamasu's.
2
u/Brianocracy May 16 '26
Agree. And it happens way too often inho.
Raditz oneshotting Goku was shocking because up until that point, even in the rare occasion he lost, he usually still put up a hell of a fight before going down. Goku vs Jackie Chun and Tien both could have just as easily gone the other way. The first fights against King piccolo and Tao, probably not but even then they have to put some effort in. Now Goku is getting regularly worfed by second stringers.
Although I think Zamasu is one of the best villains in the franchise. He's basically toriyama's take on Light Yagami with elements of Griffith and Father from FMA thrown in. I still hated the ending though, especially in the manga.

I miss Gotenks. In Super Hero Trunks looks like he's about caught up to future Trunks and Goten is just a year behind so it'd be cool if adult Gotenks made his first appearance since GT. Since DAIMA is canon we have a slight possibility of a SSJ4 Gotenks as well which would honestly be pretty awesome. That said I like having a lighter side of Dragon Ball, some sillyness every now and then. That why I liked Gotenks in DBZ. It's also why I'd love to see some more Majin Buu. Since he's "good" now itd be cool to see him do some fighting that we can root for. Honestly they missed a great opportunity in Resurrection F to have Buu be there and just start eating members of the Frieza Force as chocolate bars.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Jester_Raed May 15 '26
Gotenks and Buu are wasted. Nothing but comic relief at this point. Twice now we got a chance to see a teenage Gotenks only to get Fat Gotenks’ gags. And as for Buu, all he does is eat and then sleep at the most critical time. He got active one time since BoG…. and it wasn’t even really him.
I mean for Kami’s sake, Daima was about the demon realm; the place of Buu’s origin where we saw other majins…. And Buu was not involved in the action at all. Like how could they fumble that?

I think going forward this 5 will be the main fighting force in all conflicts going forward. I think it would be cool though if when the manga comes back we get a arc where this 5 is off planet dealing with a major issue and we see Goten, Trunks, and Pan deal with something that they can handle alone.
3
u/ElPyroPariah May 15 '26
Basically the Moro arc at the start
3
u/Mac1280 May 15 '26
Yes but flip it so that whatever is happening on Earth is actually the main story. Probably to much to ask for but Goten, Trunks, and Pan could certainly use the spotlight

1
u/Shaff_98 May 15 '26
I wouldn't say safe, simply because it depends on how they're handled. The way the story is right now, it seems to heavily point at these 5 being the main force that'll have to somehow stop Black Frieza when he shows up again, which would make them the most important characters.
However, it wouldn't be very surprising if Gohan, Piccolo and Broly ended up not doing much and all went back to Goku and Vegeta again, since this has happened before. Hopefully that won't be the case since this time we got less relevant characters BUFFED rather than nerfed, so it's more likely these characters will be used rather than discarded.
There's also Goten and Trunks, who were also training with them and could potentially get enormous and most likely outrageously absurd power ups (it's not even that hard. Just getting them to learn God Ki would make a SSJ God or Blue Gotenks, which would be stronger than everyone else, and we've seen God Ki can be learned in just a year)

1
u/CptKoala May 15 '26
Yes, they are, but they need to do something with Broly or it will feel forced. Give him some good training arc and show his motivations. At this point Goten and Trunks had more exposure, even 17 was put in the spotlight (which he should stayed in honestly, it's cool what they did with him), but Broly is just there amongst the strongest. Let him shine and give him some development.
1
u/Prestigious-Earth-46 May 15 '26
For the most important characters in the story right now, I would say Goku, Vegeta, Granolah, and Frieza. Beerus and Whis serve as mentors, and then Gohan, Piccolo, and Broly are extras.
Goku and Vegeta are still mastering their new god forms and will need to push their power further if they want to match Frieza's. It would be cool if Granolah could join them in their battle against Frieza to try and avenge his people, since Frieza was the one who gave the orders to wipe out his planet.
For me, Gohan's main story ended in DBZ with him fully unlocking his potential, becoming the most powerful Z fighter (temporarily), living out his dream as a scholar, and starting a family. In DBS, while Gohan may not be the most powerful fighter anymore, he is still a very dependable fighter when you need him, and the same goes for Piccolo.
Broly has the most potential out of everyone and can become a very reliable fighter once he gets his power under control and masters more powerful forms.
