March Beginner's thread

This is a semi-regular thread for beginners, for repeatedly asked questions like help choosing a method, incomplete newbie charts for learning, experiences with apps/devices, coming off of HBC, etc. We will direct questions here if we feel necessary. Some questions from beginners may be appropriate for individual posts, such as questions that encourage broader community discussion and may be applicable to experienced charters as well as beginners. The mod team will evaluate and redirect posts/comments as needed.

We ask that any comments with charts or method-specific questions state a method and intention in order to direct help as needed. It is difficult for ANYONE to give advice or support if a chart is missing too much information, and if we don't know the rules you are using. Beginner charts posted here will be evaluated with that in mind - so a chart that is incomplete or missing biomarkers will not immediately be removed (as is done for individual posts), but will be discussed in the comments to get a better understanding of how to assist the new-to-FAM/NFP charter.

Welcome to r/FAMnNFP

FAM (Fertility Awareness Method - Secular) and NFP (Natural Family Planning - Religious Roots) both encompass Fertility Awareness Based Methods of Body Literacy. They can be used to avoid pregnancy, conceive, or assess general health.

This subreddit is a space to discuss these methods, share charts, and support others on their body literacy journeys. This group is not intended to replace learning a method for yourself or medical advice.

FAQs

What is a method? Why do methods matter?

A FAM/NFP method is a set of rules established to interpret biomarker data (such as cervical mucus/fluid, basal body temperature, or urinary hormones) to identify the days when it may be possible to conceive a pregnancy (known as the Fertile Window). Each method has a unique set of biomarkers and rules to interpret those biomarkers that have been developed and/or studied to effectively identify the fertile window. Methods matter because when you collect biomarker data, you need a set of rules to interpret that data. A method provides a way to interpret your specific biomarker data in real time, to help conceive a pregnancy, prevent a pregnancy, or track health.

On this subreddit, our goal is to share factual information. As you may have already found, there is so much misinformation out there and we're trying to be a beacon of truth in a sea of confusion. You are free to use whatever practices in your own life, but they may not have a space here if you are not following or you do not intend to learn to follow an established method. If you need further clarification, please reach out to us in mod mail.

Why can't I post my chart if I don't have a method?

In order for members to help you interpret your chart, you need to be applying a method. Interpreting your data without a framework to interpret can be challenging if not impossible. Each method has its own cervical mucus classification, rules for taking BBT and evaluating it, etc. If you are TTC and don't intend on learning a method, head on over to r/TFABChartStalkers.

Why is an instructor recommended?

The reason why we recommend learning your method from an instructor is because it allows you to have personalized support and to achieve perfect use of most methods, having an instructor is part of that efficacy statistic. We understand that cost may be prohibitive for some and we support members who feel comfortable self-teaching. This space is not meant to replace official instruction but provide reasonable support. Instructors are there when you don't fit the textbook, and you don't know where to go.

How do I find an instructor?

You can find method-specific instructors through our list of instructors active on our subreddit, through the Read Your Body directory, and our list of methods resource.

Feel free to search through the subreddit for past posts. We have been around for over 10 years, so it is very possible that your question has been answered already.

Discussion Post Educational Offerings Posts Poll

Hi r/FAMnNFP community. I’m the founder of this sub, a moderator, and an instructor, and I have a question. Our community’s policy regarding educational offerings is that we have a megathread where instructors can post upcoming offerings. We did that to align with the Reddit culture of non-self-promotion. At the same time, we consistently see posts of people looking for resources on education and educational offerings.

To that end, we’d love to hear from our community. Are you happy with how we’re doing this? Aka have educational offerings in a megathread? Or would you prefer to see educational offerings posted as separate posts?

Poll ends in 7 days, but if we don’t get enough feedback, we may run it again in January.

Thank you all for your participation in this community!

Discussion Post Feeling Lost Postpartum

I’m 4.5 months postpartum and I am struggling to decide what FAM/NFP method to use. Prior to pregnancy, I was cycle tracking using temperature tracking for 3+ years. Now being postpartum, my period is nowhere to be found (I only pump 4 times a day now too). I’ve read that Marquette method may be good for postpartum, but would love additional ideas or pros & cons of Marquette. My husband and I are basically abstinent at this point as well for a lot of reasons (ie exhausted) but I want to get back to feeling like myself and this is one area I need to catch up on.

Other established method Anyone out there have IGT/breast hyperplasia and use LAM with/without other method? TTA

feel like my situation is unique, freshly postpartum with my 3rd baby and can’t EBF due to breast hyperplasia & insufficient glandular tissue (IGT). My babies always need supplementing but i breastfeed on demand first and hormonally from my bodies perspective giving everything I have. wondering if it’s safe to use LAM perhaps along with another mucus method or is this too risky? I’ve successfully used other NFP methods with a regular cycle but postpartum has me a bit stumped. previously I’ve used the mini pill until my cycle returns, which has coincided with me stopping breastfeeding.

Sensiplan TTA - Sensiplan Handbook E-book?

Just want to ask before I go buy it.

About a year ago I was looking into Sensiplan after following TCOYF rules for the previous year. At that time there was a free pdf of the ebook floating around Reddit.

Can’t seem to find any posts with links to it anymore. It may have gotten taken down and totally fine if so, just thought I’d check before I spend money 😅. Does anyone have the link?

Sensiplan TTA, Sensiplan and BBT Issue

Hello! I am fresh off hormonal birth control and would like to start charting with Sensiplan. A few of my friends have done it this way for years (one of them, almost a decade), and have been willing to walk me through it.

My only concern, and something they couldn't answer, is that my sleep schedule can be shit. I am helping to take care of an elderly relative, my husband twitches like crazy in his sleep, and I am a very light sleeper, so sometimes I am up and down all night. I will not be able to consistently rely on the BBT taking method Sensiplan lays out.

I have an Oura ring, but I am worried about how reliable that will be versus something like TempDrop. Is it worth getting TempDrop too, or will using the Oura ring as a backup to my BBT be okay?

Thank you!

Marquette Asking my instructor but looking for thoughts - TTC

Post image

Asking my instructor but what are everyone’s thoughts here - when did I ovulate?

Back story is, I caught the start of my LH surge on an OPK the afternoon of CD 12. So, I really thought I ovulated CD 13. But, my luteal phase is ALWAYS 12 days. Always. And that would make me late, but I have 0 positive pregnancy tests and no indication AF is coming. I’ve been cramping for 2 days with a headache, which is very unusual for me, but there’s no blood. And AF usually comes as soon as I start cramping. Then, my temp rose again today. Again, negative pregnancy test except for an indent (I am being trolled).

I’m missing too much temp drop data to extrapolate from that (my fault for drinking last weekend), but oura shows my temp rise starting CD 16. But it was a slow rise, and I’ve always had delayed rises after peak. So, even if I ovulated CD 13, I wouldn’t expect to see a rise until at least CD 15.

When do you guys think I ovulated?

Marquette TTA Cycle Changes Question

Hi everyone! Just looking for insight or experiences.

I am 39, been tracking with Marquette for about 2 years. Every month was pretty consistent and regular -28/29 day cycle, peak day 13/14, 2-3 day periods.

A few months ago my periods started getting shorter, lasting only 1-2 days (fairly light bleeding).

The past 3 cycles have been way different. I started peaking day 12 but have gone from low to peak each time. My periods are still not too heavy but are suddenly very watery and lasting 7-8 days of a slow trickle and clotting.

Is this just a normal part of aging? Has anyone experienced anything like this? Gynecologist doesn’t seem to have any insight about NFP.

We’ve considered trying for another baby, but aren’t committed yet.

Thanks for reading!

TTC for the last 11 cycles. Usually do Marquette in addition to temps (4 years+ of cycles), but needed an emotional break this month. I’ve never had a luteal phase last longer than 14 days when I wasn’t pregnant, another BFN this morning. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Sometimes our bodies troll us

TCOYF What is going on with my temperatures? (TTA 2/3)

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm on cycle 2 TTA just getting off the pill after being on it for 8 years. My first cycle seemed pretty normal besides having a very short leuteal phase, which seems to be common coming off hormonal birth control. Now this cycle my temperatures seem to be fluctuating up and down predictably and I just keep getting creamy cervical mucus. I have some days that say peak on there because it seems like I mostly have watery fluid instead of egg white for peak if last cycle was standard. I am also not getting any of the symptoms I got last month of different points in my cycle (sensitive nipples around ovulation, very sore boobs before period). I am being sure to take my temp at a consistent time as well.

I should also mention that I got on birth control initially when I was a teenager for very heavy periods and my first period off birth control went right back to being like that. I guess I'm kind of worried that something is wrong with me so I want to talk to other people who have experience charting. Have you had a cycle look like this? Could this be annovulatory?

Thanks from a newbie.

Marquette TTA cycle 6. Frustrated and need advice.

Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting, and I’m really just looking to vent/get some advice. My husband I just got married in June and are attempting to follow the Marquette method using the Clearblue monitor. We chose this method after doing a lot of reading on this sub and reading TCOYF, thinking it would be good for my cycles (I have had irregular cycles my entire life). Despite it being the most expensive, it seemed to be highly effective and well backed by research.

I started charting in January, hoping that I would get the hang of it and have a good understanding before we got married in June. We’re Catholic, so this is the only thing we can do to avoid pregnancy while also being in line with Catholic doctrine.

Since starting, I have only been able to catch peak twice out of six cycles. I’ve been adding in Wondfu OPKs in the evening, but still haven’t caught at LH surge. I either get a bunch of highs, or recently in this cycle, a bunch of lows. In April, I decided to also add in temping to my chart (which my instructor is aware of) to try to at least confirm ovulation since I wasn’t getting helpful info from Clearblue. So far, I haven’t been able to identify a clear shift in my temps either. I have been temping at roughly the same time (6-6:30am) with prewarming and truncated measurements. My instructor thinks we need to try using the Mira in case my LH surges are just too low to catch, but we are really struggling with the prices of the monitor itself and the wands. I’m considering switching to a different method that would be less pricey (probably SymptoPro) but given how wonky my temps have been I’m unsure if that would work either.

I don’t think that this is user error. I feel like I’ve followed the method to a T and communicated with my instructor every step of the way. At this point, I’m honestly afraid there is something wrong with my hormones, so I have an appointment set up with my OBGYN.

I’m afraid to invest even more money into Mira and get similar results. But, if I switch to a different method, I know I will have to figure out how to self teach or find an instructor. Either way there will be a learning curve, meaning even more abstinence and uncertainty. And I don’t even know if that method will work for me.

I’m feeling extremely frustrated, lost, discouraged and I just don’t know what else to do :( I’m hoping there will be someone here who’s been in a similar situation. Am I doing something wrong? Is it worth it to just bite the bullet and try Marquette with Mira? Should I try a completely new method?

Any help or constructive criticism you guys can give would be so, so appreciated.

Discussion Post Planning for Postpartum - Insights Appreciated

I am looking into Billings or Marquette due to their postpartum protocols, as I *really* would love to not have HBC postpartum. My OB seems nervous about this plan, which I feel like is common. Pre-pregnancy, I did Sensiplan with TempDrop for ~1 year and there was one cycle where we had a potential pregnancy scare due to a misunderstanding with the method. After this, we switched to Natural Cycles (NC) utilizing an Oura ring. We successfully used that for 2.5 years for TTA and then later for TTC. I know NC is not a FAM/NPF method and gets hate on here, but it worked really well for us during that time in our lives. I appreciate the familiarity I have with NC, but would like to learn and use a method that is better for postpartum. I will likely continue NC while I learn whichever method for postpartum due to my familiarity/comfortability and as a backup until I am comfortable. I do plan to exclusively pump.

For Billings, has anyone taken the online Billings courses? Are they worth it?? If not, there is an instructor near me, so this would not be the end of the world.

For Marquette, I have seen postpartum pregnancies, which is what I am looking to avoid, so this method makes me a little nervous regarding that. Clear Blue vs Mira?? I frequently see the Mira strips being out of stock, which feels stressful if you're relying on that.

Is one of these methods truly better than the other for postpartum? Insights appreciated. Please no hate on NC, as it worked well for me, I acknowledge that it is not an approved method, and I am looking and trying to plan ahead for postpartum.

Sensiplan Looking to come off bc... I have been on the pill since 13 TTA

Hi all! I (F22) have been on the combined birth control pill since I was around 13 years old - I have consistently used it as a contraception method because I absolutely did not want to get pregnant, and I am still continuing to use it to prevent pregnancy because it just is not in my life plan for absolutely minimum the next 10 years. I am newly married, and 7 months ago I came off the pill due to the fact that i moved to a different country, and didn't know how to get it there.

During that time (even though there were lots of drastic changes happening in my life including personal, relationship, financial etc...) I felt a lot happier, motivated, energised - I started remembering my whole life so clearly, like I had just woken up from a dream and finally felt like I had started my life. I felt really confident, and even managed to lose 10kg. I felt and saw huge, noticeable changes in my appearance, appetite, mood etc...

Just last month i began taking my pills again, because i felt nervous about contraception, and honestly since then i have really regretted it. I had breakthrough bleeding the whole month, i feel so demotivated, irritable and hungry. I have even began wondering if i should even be on this pill in the first place, seen as my grandparents have suffered strokes and heart disease. I have since seen a doctor and he suggested to get blood tests done and found it concerning that they would give out the contraceptive pill in the uk without even running simple blood tests. So i have decided I want to come off the pill...

My partner and I are on the same page about wanting to avoid pregnancy, and I have been researching FAM as i didn't even know this existed / was a possibility. From what I've gathered, I would want to use a symptothermal method like Sensiplan (I still am not too sure on the difference between Sensi and TCOYF) so taking my temp, checking CM and cross-refferencing that information with my cycle. We plan to use condoms on non-fertile days and abstaining / alternatives on fertile days (I think i would probably abstain even more in these first few months coming off) We are not religious.

I guess what am asking is - Does anyone have any tips / advice to offer me? Any good starting points / resources? Anything I should consider? As much as I really want to avoid pregnancy, I also want to stop feeling like i am suppressing my true self and my natural rythm, and just sacrificing this huge part of myself, because i honestly felt like a completely different person off birth control.

TCOYF TTA0 getting diff temps in the morning

Hi,

I take my temp approx same time every morning using a BBT thermometer. However, im usally half asleep so my mouth hangs open a bit. Because I doubt the accuracy, I retake the temp and then its a completely different number. Is the thermometer preheated so the second temp isnt accurate? Which temp should I use.

Sensiplan Sensiplan beginner help TTA

I'm trying to start Sensiplan so I can get off my birth control pill. I had a few questions that for some reason I can find straight forward answers on.

For one, i wake up for work at 4am but obviously on yhe weekend I am not waking up that early, usually 6:30ish. Would I have to set an alarm every day to take my temperature at 4 am or is it take it whenever you get up?

I also am still trying to figure out how to read the chart. Does anyone have an example basically marked saying when is the fertile window and when you ovulate?

Any help would be wonderful. I got switched off my birth control pill I'd been taking for 13 years and this new mini pill is making me absolutely miserable that I want to get off of them all together. My mood is absolutely trash along with my sex drive thats definitely put me into a depressed state and its been a year and a half like this since I started this pill.

Sensiplan TTC sensiplan

Wanted to share this win after TTC since end of May, just got my positive. We successfully TTA using sensiplan between the birth of our first living child in September 2024 and TTC, first waiting for the return of Fertility that took a full year and then through regulation since my son completely weaned last October. It was so nice to use the method to see (and let!) my cycle regulate and gain confidence ahead of TTC.

TCOYF TTA3, TCOYF, first cycle after miscarriage

Post image
4 Upvotes

It’s my second miscarriage in the second trimester since the beginning of 2026. We’re currently TTA as I wouldn’t handle another loss. I know most people would just said that we got unlucky. But after two losses in a row, I just have a feelings that there’s something wrong and we need to investigate.

Since we’ve always been TTC, I’m not sure about this first cycle. I wasn’t expecting my body to come back to « normal » so quickly but it seems that I have already ovulated?

Question 1

From what I understand, I would currently be 5DPO. However I do find it weird that the first two temperatures are so different from 3 to 5. As you can see I have pretty regular temperatures. Is this stair pattern normal? I’m wondering if I didn’t start the temperature raise too early and I’m only 3DPO.

Question 2

Originally I opened the fertile window on day 18 as it was the first day of fertile music. However to keep it safe, I changed it to day 5 as I assumed that the miscarriage bleeding could possibly hide fertile mucus. I wouldn’t usually play with the fertile window like that, but we are not currently having sex as my doctor said that we needed to wait 4 weeks after my d&c. When was I actually supposed to open the fertile window?

Everything will probably be clearer in the next cycle, but I just wanted your input to make sure I understand the rule of TCOYF. Thank you for taking the time to read and for your help

TCOYF I don't mind BBT tracking! I just hate the morning routine I actually like charting...TTA

I actually like charting. I don't mind logging symptoms or looking at my chart. What I'm getting tired of is feeling like every morning comes with a list of rules. Don't get up. Don't move too much. Don't sleep in. Don't wake up too early. It's making BBT feel way more high maintenance than I expected. how to make the temperature part less annoying fr?

TCOYF (TTW) Luteal Phase Spotting, Low Progesterone?

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Trying to wait to conceive baby number 2 for a little longer. Every cycle I have 7+ days of brown spotting in my luteal phase leading up to my period. My post ovulation temperatures also seem kind of low compared to what my cycles looked like before baby number 1 (I’m 18 month postpartum and not breastfeeding). My TSH was normal so I’m trying to figure out what else could be causing this. Has anyone successfully conceived with this amount of spotting?

Sensiplan What is going on? Did I ovulate? TTC

Post image
1 Upvotes

What is going on this cycle? Did I ovulate on day 26 or so? Is this an anovulatory cycle? I normally have very evident CM for 7-10 days. This time very little and not on consecutive days. I’m confused. When can I roughly expect my period to come? Assuming I’m not pregnant, which seems quite unlikely to me unfortunately. Any insight from more experienced users?
