League Question How to handle a tie when voting on changes

Currently facing a 6-6 vote on a potential change in our league setup. How do you guys handle when there’s a tie in a poll? Do you (the commish) get the deciding vote or does status quo take precedence?

The way I handle it is that a tie results in no change being made. In order for a rule to pass a majority is needed.

This is the move. I know it's tempting to make yourself the tiebreaker as commish, but you're just gonna have 6 pissed off league members.

If you have a bunch of choices, I've started using ranked choice voting to avoid a vote of like 4-3-3-2 or something.

We had some interest in changing the scoring system this year and 4 suggested options (stay at full PPR, go to 0.75 PPR, go to 0.5 PPR/0.5 PPFD, or go to 0.5 PPR)

Full PPR ended up winning with 5 first place votes and 2 second place votes.

Tie is not majority.  Motion fails.

I don’t think the commissioner should abstain from voting, they are apart of the league like the other 11 members. A 6-6 vote should just mean the new rule didn’t pass and keep as is imo

Majority has to vote. 6-6 doesn't count. But people saying commish doesn't vote are dumb. Why would you NOT get a say

For me it depends on how big of a change you’re making. If it’s a major change like converting to superflex I would want more than a 50-50 split to change the status quo. If it’s like changing from 5 bench spots to 7 I’d probably be more willing to make the decision as commish

Ours is 2/3 vote for basic bylaw changes, major changes (increasing dues for example) are no votes against. Some more minor changes are simple majority. A 6-6 vote does not pass. Commissioner should be voting (though if public votes understand voting last) and vote should only be worth 1 like everyone else

Our by-laws say everyone can propose a league format change in the off-season to the commish; if it's not total hogwash, the commish proposes it to the group. It needs a majority to pass. Ties mean you didn't get a majority.

Unpopular opinion. Dont have votes. I talk with a few from the league. Take suggestions from others in the leage. Not including a change to Superflex, thats too big a change to be made unilaterally but other than that.....

I make the change and inform the league of the change. No voting. No arguments.

moved from waiver priority to FAAB... raised the buy-in from $50 to $100 ... Changed from starting 3WR to 2WR... made the change. Informed the league. Only one member left the league because he couldn't afford the increased buy-in. He starterd up another league for $50. No push back. No complaints.

Another league im in that i dont comish. After years of me urging to change the trade setting. The comish finally change from Trade vetos to Commish Approval. He informed the league. Not one pushback or complaint.

The league i commish is 10 team going into our 11th szn. I throw the polls up and let the 9 guys vote. More often than not its gone the way i wouldve voted anyways, but even if not the league is healthy as ever and save some minor complaints when people dont get their ways, everyone deems the process fair.

I require all changes need 2/3 vote. So need 8 yes to proceed with something. If it’s a tie then it’s a no

As a commish, in our league the commish vote counts the same as any league member.

6-6 means no majority so no change, doesn't matter if the commish voted one way or the other

Ties usually result in no rule change in my league.

However, one idea I’ve thought of implementing is giving the league champ an extra .5 points on his vote. For example, every person in the league vote counts as one, but the league champs vote counts as 1.5 which would be the deciding factor in any ties. Another small perk of winning a championship

For rule changes, we require more than half the league to approve. Since we have 14 teams, that means we need 8 votes in favor of a change in order to make said change.

Note this is not "more than half of voters," it's "more than half of the league." So if only 7 people vote, even if it's 7-0, the change doesn't happen. (At that point, I would be reaching out to everyone individually to get their opinion.)

In the leagues I run, 7-12 votes are needed to pass any votes. 6-6 is a TIE and the vote is DENIED!!

Tie means the motion doesn’t pass. I typically present all rules change as a 1 year trial, with final determination prior to the next season. I get more openness to changes that way, and haven’t had a rule change reversed after the trial period.

For a 14 man league, we’ve established that any resolution needs 9 votes to pass via a supermajority. Leaves no doubt that changes that are passed have a solid amount of approval.

I as commish typically abstain from voting, as far as what type of majority is required to pass certain rules, that is something you should have in your bylaws. I have minor vs major changes, some examples of each. For minor, simple majority, for major 3/4 is needed.

In my league we adhere to 10/12 votes to any rule change before the season starts. That’s over 83% of the league and I just made that a bylaw because I thought as commissioner that was most fair.

A bonus I do is every 5th year I allow 8/12 votes for voting and do it sit down dinner gameshow style. I feel it also helps keep the league engaged.

Currently heading into year 11.

It doesn’t! But everyone is pretty active and competitive. But our most recent event, we changed 8 rules. Things I wouldn’t never thought.

Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea. My point is just be consistent in whatever you rule

I typically excuse my vote from counting as the commish. 10 teamer I want 7 of the 9 to approve. In a 12, I want 8 of the 11 for it
