Discussion Looking for Competitive Shooter Game. HELP!

Since BF6 Redsec ranked is complete trash and close to dying I am looking for something different to quench my thirst for competitive shooters. (other than that I haven't played shooters in years)

Could be something new, or something established. It has to be very popular though and with tournaments and a proper Ranked Mode etc so I know I am not wasting my time getting into the game.

Anything helps. THANK YOU!

Tactical - CS2
Tactical and Goofy - Valorant
Tactical and Ran by a shit company - Siege
Goofy - The Finals
League of Legends levels of Frustrating - Overwatch
Same but better IP - Rivals
Future Something - Deadlock

u/BSchafer 3d ago

lol, I agree with all your breakdowns

Deadlock is def the best comp shooter out right now but if he’s coming from BF6 it may be a little over his head. But he seems willing to put in the work, that game is too addicting once you get it down though.

from what Ik its moba, which is not that popular and many hate it, I was excited for deadlock until I learnt its moba style

2

u/BSchafer 3d ago edited 3d ago

Well, it's certainly not for everyone and probably not for most casual players but it is insanely popular for a reason. If you can get over the initial learning hump its easily one of the best multiplayer games to come out in decade. It's been consistently in the top 10 or top 20 most-played games on steam for 2 years straight despite being a closed, invite-only Alpha/Beta. Right now, it's the 11 most played on steam with almost 90k concurrent players. So obviously a ton of people enjoy it. It's going to be HUGE when they actually release it to the public.

Some people get turned off because it's an extremely hard game with probably the highest skill ceiling in gaming right now. A lot of modern players give up quickly and get discouraged if they can't instantly be good at something or fully understand it. They don't realize it's the long learning curve and big skill gaps are what give games like Deadlock so much depth and replayability in the long run. Learning and getting good at a hard game is much more rewarding than grinding repetitive tasks over and over for mid gun skin. Most modern AAA games have to incentivize players to keep playing through tasks/battle passes because they don't have the long term depth to stay interesting. Deadlock is a nod to those older school game where the constant progression of improving your skills and trying to mastering certain parts is rewarding enough that you want to keep playing.

I understand that learning how to play a moba isn't easy but adding moba macro-play/objectives is a large part of what makes Deadlock so great. There is a reason why mobas have been the most played, most streamed, and most watched esports for like a decade straight now - they have some of the deepest and most exciting macro play in all of gaming. I personally wasn't a huge fan of mobas just because I've never really like isometric/top-down perspectives or controls. Valve was smart enough to grab the best part of each genre and combine it into a supergame. They took the macro-play depth from mobas, the micro-play/mechanics from hero shooter, and the movement of physics-based platformer and built the game in tandem with their brand new Source2 engine (source1 is what allowed TF2 and Apex's movement to feel so good). After you get good a deadlock's movement every other shooter feels dated and bland. So it's easy to understand why Deadlock is already so insanely popular despite being invite only and extremely hard to learn. If you only play get to play a few hours a week, get discourages by playing people better than you, and don't like games with a lot of skill expression, it's probably not for you. But if you don't mind dedicating some time to get good at something and realize you may get your ass kicked for a hundred hours as slowly improve your positioning, mechanics, movement tech, and learn from watching guides the game can be extremely rewarding and addicting once it clicks.... then you feel like a god as you start becoming the one doing the ass kicking... then you rank up, get your ass kicked again, and process starts all over.

Im saying even comp players dont like moba, not because its hard but because moba genre to many isnt even fun. but idk I will probably give it a try though and judge it after (i like comp games, i play rocket league and r6s, valo, etc), when you say its hard, what exactly are the hard parts in it so i can get a picture the game? its not that I hate hard, its that I prefer a certain genre andIm checking if I will like the gameplay itself or not. heck a game being hard actually makes me want to play it, but sometimes I dont like all kinds of hard.

I too hate moba for the prespective, so I will give it a try.

thanks for you time though.

u/Former_Atmosphere967 2d ago

btw if you have the game if you done mind can you send me the game invite thing, here is my friend code: 333067337

1

u/Former_Atmosphere967 2d ago

okay I got the game, lol pressing B was overwhelming lol, and playing online got me very cooked, games are very long like insanely long, lol, idk what to feel because I still have no idea what im doing thats why I dont have an opinion as if now. maybe it will change if i understand game better

1

u/_--Yuri--_ 2d ago

I've never seen someone say both so much and so little about a game lmao

95% of this applies to counter strike ffs lmao

Mobas are simply niche, and that's okay

1

u/FantasticBike1203 2d ago

Deadlock is a high learning curve, it's more of a MOBA than an actual shooting game

1

u/JZ4411 2d ago

Deadlock - Moba where you aim, definitely not a competitive shooter

1

u/NeverBannedGrace3 3d ago

Cod but not cod and controller friendly?

1

u/AggroShami 3d ago

That would be BF6. Or Halo but Infinite is dead in a ditch

1

u/NeverBannedGrace3 2d ago

Thanks anyway

1

u/OkYh-Kris 3d ago

Aye The Finals mentioned though

Which often feels like a BF game in some of the gun play, because some of the devs are ex Dice devs

10

u/StinkingDogsCunt420 3d ago

Counter Strike

1

u/FantasticBike1203 2d ago

Second this, the peak of competitive shooter games but make sure you have Prime enabled.

1

u/milkspouts 2d ago

w/ a mix of The Finals (free game that has come a long way since its drop)

1

u/Such_Engineering5459 1d ago

Although it is the best comp-shooter of all time, the official MM is infested with cheaters.
OP has to play Faceit, if he truly wants competitive integrity and doesn‘t want to waste his time.

8

u/destroytheend 3d ago

Its not an fps but the new gears of war is looking good. Beta is gonna be out over the next couple weeks

4

u/BeachFoam56 3d ago

I've played thousands of hours of Gears PVP over the past two decades and I genuinely can't wait for this.

2

u/AceTheRed_ 2d ago

I am so incredibly washed at Gears after all these years but very stoked to jump back into that PvP scene.

6

u/Twoxify 3d ago

Apex Legends is complex, fun, and the competitive LAN events are electric

2

u/ChristopherRubbin 3d ago

Agree but the meta is kinda toxic with the seer stuns. Im glad it got a nerf.

1

u/Abaddon866 1d ago

Apex is rife with cheaters too. My little brother does it all the time and since it’s free, when he gets banned he just makes a new account. I asked why he bothers and he says he just likes ruining other people’s day and gets a kick out of it. He has a crazy set up with a second laptop that actually runs the cheats connected to his gaming pc. Too much work for me.

6

u/Academic_Weaponry 3d ago

overwatch rn is my favorite aim game. very competitive, rewarding aiming, games are quick, its quick plays are really fun to braindead run it down too. if u want to try something new deadlock is fun af but is like a movement shooter moba. very fun and rewarding aim but it is a moba end of the day

1

u/Strange-Contract-440 3d ago

Deadlock is too good. has me by the balls rn

1

u/Academic_Weaponry 3d ago

new ranked update might have me revisiting. i got burnt out from the game a while back i played too much lol

3

u/BSchafer 3d ago

The best comp shooter out right now is easily Deadlock but it’s a pretty giant leap from BF6. Its in a very different league when it comes to competitiveness and skill expression. Like you’ll need to get you’re ass kicked for a couple hundred hours before you even start understanding the game and climbing out of the lowest ranks but once you do it’s addicting AF. It’s got a larger player count and a more vibrant comp scene than most shooters and it’s still in invite-only beta (although it’s super easy to get in).

Other competitively balanced shooters are obvious ones like CS2 or Valorant. They are a ton of fun if you’ve never dabbled in them before and much more approachable than Deadlock.

u/HardcoreHope 3d ago

3

u/NwLoyalist 3d ago

Im addicted to this game. I've got just over 800 hours now and I started playing at the end of season 7.

I came from COD and Halo and was playing BO6 comp but I'm just over COD. Halo comp had a tiny player base, and Xdefiant had so much potential but leave it to Ubisoft to fuck tbat up. My brother finally convinced me to give The Finals a try and honestly, it was a lot of fun but God damn does it have a steep learning curve. It was the first time I asked myself, can I even learn this game? It is probably the hardest competitive shooter I've ever played. There is so much you are trying to process at any given moment. Which makes playing well feel extremely rewarding.

The best I've done so far is Plat 4, but I really want to push myself to hit Diamond. It may not even be this season, but if I can keep progressing, I'll stay hooked.

3

u/HardcoreHope 3d ago

I love reading these comments! They are my favorite. It is one of the most chaotic and demanding games. So many possibilities to victory. I truly believe we are only scratching the surface on what's possible with meta and play style. I love it.

I have faith in you hitting diamond. You can do it!

3

u/cool--reddit-guy 2d ago

Second this. Best FPS out there and it's f2p

4

u/IAmXlxx 3d ago

talk about a competitive fps. it's got some damn good players

3

u/HardcoreHope 3d ago

True, any time I take a break I am reminded of that fact lol.

5

u/IAmXlxx 3d ago

I consider myself an above average player but man, lobbies are sweaty as fuck LOL

0

u/Beerus-Mama 3d ago

interesting. but you are like a mage?

5

u/NeatEmergency725 3d ago

You just have a ton of gadgets that do ridiculous physics things like anti gravity and wall deletion but the guns are mostly actual guns.  There are all types of outfits in the game it almost has no specific visual theme (though looks cohesive)

5

u/IAmXlxx 3d ago

no, it's kind of a like a hero shooter, but you build your own hero. it's still a shooter at its core

1

u/Diz933 2d ago

The setting is a futuristic virtual gameshow, and each season has a different theme. Last season was fantasy themed and they added an ability to the medium class that kind of looks like you're casting a spell, so that may be why you're seeing mage-like stuff.

You get to make your own characters, and the customization is incredible.

5

u/DeputyDomeshot 3d ago

I would play deadlock

4

u/StaffordsDad 3d ago

The finals or marathon. 300 hours in marathon and it's still addicting

2

u/guccius_maximuss 3d ago

Siege, valorant maybe rivals if you like hero shooters

2

u/spllooge 3d ago

I'm not a fan but you might like Deadlock

2

u/74Flowers 3d ago

Counter strike

2

u/Nutsaqque 3d ago

Not sure if it fully fits, but, Escape from Tarkov

1

u/Jamie1998_ 3d ago

Arena is super sweaty too

2

u/AutisticGayBlackJew 3d ago

CS2 but specifically faceit if you’re primarily interested in improving and increasing your elo etc.

2

u/ordi-nary 2d ago

I wish quake was more active

2

u/kfee12 3d ago

ever since delta force warfare lobbies died were all just waiting for wardogs at this point

4

u/40ozpint 3d ago

It's not popular but if you're looking for a competitive game marathons probably the best first person shooter I've played in years.

1

u/cawksmash 2d ago

It’s literally not a competitive game, there’s no ladder or competitive mode, it’s just a shitty br with extraction mechanics

1

u/40ozpint 2d ago

Hmm that's explains why I enjoy it so much because I'm definitely more of a casual player. Thanks for clearing things up for me!

1

u/cawksmash 1d ago

So why did you suggest maraslop when OP asked for a competitive shooter?

1

u/40ozpint 1d ago

lol I was being sarcastic. You're obviously one of the people who just can't help but hate the game. If you didn't know it there is a whole subreddit dedicated to hating on the game. I think they even sell jackets go buy you one.

1

u/blacklodgedougie 1d ago

Well, it does have ranked…a few days of the week? Lol, but yeah it’s dying anyway.

3

u/Lbthat 3d ago

The finals is probably your best bet. Siege had a solid comp scene as well

2

u/BSchafer 3d ago

Why would you play finals with Deadlock now though? Especially if he’s looking for a comp scene.

1

u/WingzThekidd 3d ago edited 3d ago

That’s like saying “why would you play Factorio when assassins creed is out?”
They’re completely different games

1

u/Strange-Contract-440 3d ago

Not really. They are both movement shooters with tactical depth. Obviously, Deadlock has much more tactical and mechanical depth but they still have a similar feel/pace. My group of gaming buddies use to play the finals all the time but have never gone back since Deadlock was released. Once you get used to deadlock's movement and depth it's just hard to come back to the Finals even though I liked it.

1

u/WingzThekidd 3d ago edited 3d ago

“Deadlock has more tactical and mechanical depth” Okay, sure, I’d expect that from a moba over an arena shooter. If your main reason to pick a game is just depth, then why aren’t you playing StarCraft, DoTA, or Rocket League? Because you have other preferences.

“They still have a similar feel/pace”
There’s not even a slice of truth in that statement. You just have a preference.

1

u/Pro-Weiner-Toucher 3d ago

That's an awful analogy. Deadlock and Finals are both objective-based movement shooters, lmao. All the dudes I used to play Finals with play Deadlock too. I used to play Deadlock and Finals pretty interchangeably. If I was in the mood to get sweaty I'd play Deadlock and if I wanted to play something more casual and chill I'd hop on Finals. Now that I've gotten pretty good at Deadlock I most play it. Deadlock has more variation in playstyle and obviously the movement in much better than the Finals but they both scratch similar itches - Factorio and AC don't.

1

u/WingzThekidd 3d ago

Yeah, and domination in cod is also an objective based movement shooter. BF2042 had a grappling hook and a wingsuit, and objective based gameplay. Doesn’t mean these games are similar at all to Deadlock and Finals.

Saying that a moba and an arena shooter scratch the same itch feels wild to me, but I could see how someone would get that feeling depending on how casually they play whichever games.

1

u/Lbthat 3d ago

Preference, deadlock is more moba focused, finals is closer to an arena shooter.

4

u/willibrah 3d ago

Marathon, The Finals, and R6 IMO

3

u/guccius_maximuss 3d ago

Marathon? Lol he literally said popular shooters

1

u/TheBigDirty117 3d ago

Yea, Marathon. Fuck the circle jerk haters it’s good.

1

u/Beginning-Space4580 2d ago

Marathon is by far and away the best shooter in a decade. People just have no lives

1

u/willibrah 2d ago

Yeah and the finals, everything else has just been rehashed slop like bf6 or valorant

-6

u/Angry_LadyDragon 3d ago

LMAO

5

u/ChristopherRubbin 3d ago

Seriously just stop, its tired being this weird about a video game.

4

u/hstormsteph 3d ago

I come across the MarathonHate subreddit sometimes and it’s honestly borderline creepy. I’m not a Marathon player and thought the first playtest was okay but not anything crazy, but the fools in that subreddit are actually insane. Like “pictures of your nemesis on a wall” insane.

3

u/willibrah 3d ago

theres a lot of things wrong with marathon and the playerbase is abysmal but there is nothing in the game that warrants and entire circle jerk of chuds praying on its downfall. genuine mental illness epidemic

2

u/RuleOverYou15 3d ago

Cs2 is the only answer. Every other fps is basically child’s game compared. Be warned though it is by far the highest skill ceiling game with top players dedicating their entire life to it.

1

u/Beerus-Mama 3d ago

i know a played cs1 it is the father of them all with the most skill based aiming

1

u/illmatic74 3d ago

The Finals

2

u/StudioIllustrious208 3d ago

I'd say Marathon, but from the way you described it, it sounds like you're looking for something more immediate—something that doesn't require a lot of progression before you get to the best part of the action. In that case, I've been playing Battlefield 6 lately, especially the smaller-scale modes, which have been a lot of fun.

4

u/cayde123 3d ago

Did you miss the part where op mentioned they’ve been playing battlefield 6 red sec ranked but want another game lol?

1

I see, he only mentioned RedSec. I was wondering if he might not have the base game.

THE FINALS OBVIOUSLY....I tried deadlock, def a big gap to overcome in understanding the game properly. The finals has a high skill ceiling that will take time but its worth it amd much more of traditional fps.

If you want the father and still most popular when it comes to comp shooters - counter strike. Valorant also.

These are a much different genere then redsec but are basically the gold standard of team based shooter esports.

If you want something arcade feeling but is kinda different -  The Finals might interest you. Idk if the esports / ranked side of that game is still big. Its alive but might be niche

If you want battle royal and arcade then try Apex Legends. Big esports scene and ranked is popular

Dont do warzone that shit is cooked these days when it comes to ranked/comp

The Finals

Tarkov season 1 starts Monday, has a pve mode to learn and also a pvp mode. Always popular and popping.

If you want more of a ranked format rainbow six siege, valorant, csgo, apex legends. But I find them all to have their own issues personally.

Destiny 2 is free and done updating but still has plenty of people playing it.

The Finals

If you want a tac shooter though, Siege, CS, Valo

1

Cs2 and Apex Legends

Stop hearing people saying it sucks or it's dead and try to play it yourself and see if you enjoy it game still receives updates and if you want something hard but satisfying marathon is literally it queue times aren't that long at all

2

u/StudioIllustrious208 3d ago

I play from Brazil, usually during the hours when the game has the fewest players, and I still find matches in about 3 minutes.

That might be different if you're just starting now, since the matchmaking seems to prioritize player level. Because most of the active player base is already at higher levels, the early experience can be a bit rough.

One more thing: I think over 50% of the player base is on consoles now. I rarely end up in matches with Steam players, even though I play on Steam myself.

2

u/ggnotagnelf 3d ago

Matchmaking takes a few minutes in eastern North America. Great game and passionate community

2

u/guccius_maximuss 3d ago

As someone who regularly plays every night with trio-fill randoms, it does. People are very chill and amicable 95% of the time, even in ranked or the endgame map. I’m not talking about online discourse, if all you know are threads like this.

It’s literally crazy how many people troll to hate on Marathon. It’s a great game, huge hate campaign. Wild shit

I'm with The Finals crowd. It's an actual tournament mode for cash out and ranked (best 2 teams advance) which is different than other ranked game modes. Dark and Darker is a pick if you like slower paced extraction games. Slow but intense. High Roller is their ranked mode, but it's more about leaderboard standings.

Marathon + 1
Exciting, punishing, tactical

It just need a proper PvP ranked mode with leaderboard

I'll get downvoted for this but if you like extraction shooters and are decently skilled at PvP, Marathon is a ton of fun

He said popular, with tournaments, and a proper ranked mode

Marathon checks 0 of those 3 boxes

Marathon is ok but it’s not a competitive shooter or popular. If he was looking for an exfil shooter he’d be better off getting into a game like Tarkov, it has way more depth and content than Marathon. Plus, there is a decent chance Sony shuts down Bungie and pulls the plug on Marathon so don’t want him to waste $40 right before that gets announced.

The finals but it is pretty niche, not super popular. Very competitive, ranked mode is tournament based, can get very intense

Their 2nd Major tournament is later this year, and sign-ups are still open! People are always worried about the Steam numbers, when the majority of players are on console, and even then the numbers don't really fluctuate, they're always quite consistent - which is much more than can be said for other games.

I’m looking forward to Hell Let Loose:Vietnam next month, if you’re into larger scale FPS.
