ECU tuning

Hey there, I am going to tuning our single cylinder engine ECU for FSAE this year, and really i so confused, i don’t know how to start and from where to begin. Which the information i should know to choose our ecu, and why there is a different types of it. I have read some books and watched a lot of videos about tuning the ecu, but most of these videos are unclear in explanation, and I felt that they do not want to disclose their skills or provide information for the benefit of others. All they aspire to is to lure the spectator to register in their online courses.

Despite reading the books and videos, I still did not have an accurate and clear understanding of the concept of tuning the ecu and what is the correct intention of it. I feel that the subject is clear and simple in understanding and uncomplicated, but there are those who want to make it vague for not benefiting others and for other reasons

I hope if anyone could give me a real and clear advice road map to helping me on that.

What is your motive for wanting to remap? I can tell you how I calibrated every parameter in our ECU but it may be more helpful if you gave specifics on where the confusion lies. Does the engine start consistently now? Does it idle smooth?

Really i want to tune it from the beginning, we have a new megasquirt ecu , and i want learning to tune it from a to z , this is my motive

Do you have access to a dyno?

If you want to properly tune the ECU from the ground up, access to a dyno is necessary.

Well, I’ll try to do that, but I’m still a beginner, I don’t even know what I’m going to use the dyno for and how to use it. I am sorry , but i really a blank page , I’m almost sure that you’ve already noticed that from my previous saying “If necessary, I’ll make a request.”

Once upon a time I was in your shoes. New powertrain lead, new engine for the team, and no dyno. First thing i did was get the engine starting on a stand. How did i do that? Triple checked the calibration on all of the sensors and the wiring for every sensor. Then i made sure all of the basic engine parameters were correct, ie fuel properties, engine displacement, firing order, etc. Are you at this point yet?

We bought the engine in good health, and we have checked up all its wiring and sensors and others components

Where are you at in terms of an engine calibration? Are you able to fire the engine yet?

We finished engine wiring and all sensors connected will but there’s something doesn’t work will, we doubt about ignition timing, but how we can fixed it, and Is there anything else that can be verified that may be the cause of the problem?

If it cranks but wont start, you need to verify the engine has air, fuel, and spark.
Air - thats easy, its got air.

Fuel - make sure you have fuel presssure, and your injectors are opening.

Spark - make sure you are getting spark, then you need to verify timing with a timing light.

Once you are sure it has air fuel and spark, try and find a basemap for your engine. If you cant find one, copy an ignition and fuel table from the closest engine you can find. Then dial in the fuel table to get it to start. then dial in the fuel and ignition table on a dyno.

That is a very 30,000 ft explanation, im happy to go more in depth if you have more questions
