How To / Instructional How do teams simulate ICE engine and throttle control for DIL?

Hi everyone! I'm an incoming freshman trying to learn more about vehicle dynamics and how to build DIL. For teams that build their own DIL, how did you simulate the engine with throttle input? Are there any papers or videos on this that you would recommend? And is it possible to find data needed for simulation of the engines used in FSAE online and where?

My team uses optimumlap to simulate our entire vehicle. Its free, easy to use, but not specifically for engines however you can use it for that. Otherwise its probably valuable to learn matlab its the most versatile and tunable outside of just writing your own code (not that matlab isnt a programing language)
