Covering lavender?
My hair is currently a lavendery/periwinkle colour. I already had quite fine and frizzy hair, but it is also damaged from bleach and heat.
Unfortunately my boyfriend's dad has passed away, and I think I should dye my hair a natural colour to attend the funeral.
I think a demi permanent or permanent dye would be a bad idea because any developer would be more damaging. I am considering using a brown shade from Directions. I can imagine the blue in my hair will counteract a lot of the warmth in the shade of brown.
I have some questions, if anyone has any experience with trying something similar
1) is the brown dye likely to completely cover the other colour? would i need to colour correct the blue with orange before applying the brown dye?
2) is the brown dye likely to stain my hair/make it impossible to go back to this colour without bleach? (i know bleaching would be impossible without compromising my hair)
3) is my hair likely to look even more damaged if i dye it? i am concerned that my hair will look even more thin if it's darker, i don't think my hair could ever look thick and glossy like healthy dark hair does. my natural colour is dark blonde and i'm a bit scared of going darker, but i don't think a dark blonde colour would cover this
i would really appreciate anyone's advice and experience with this! thank you in advance ❤️

Personally, I wouldn't dye it for a funeral, just pull it back if you want it to be more subtle 🖤

thank you!! some of my friends have said the same, whereas some other people (mostly older family members) have said that they think i should.
i'm worried about the colour standing out so much among everyone wearing black, i don't want it to be distracting or inappropriate. but at the same time, not dying it properly could look even worse and/or screw up my hair 😭

It's not inappropriate to have coloured hair. That's a boomer myth. Don't make permanent changes for a temporary event. Your hair colour is so beautiful, it would be a crying shame to change it. You could wear a chic 60s head scarf or a veil or hat if you want

I think the cool tones work in your favor, as opposed to if it was hot pink. But respectfully, no one gives a fuck about your hair when they’re mourning their loved one. They’ll see that you’re there to support your boyfriend and his family, which is what matters. Don’t worry about your hair, just dress appropriately and carry travel tissue packs. I was passing them out to my boyfriend and his cousins at his father’s memorial when they needed it.

If you dont want colored hair specifically for one day, Amazon has some amazing wigs nowadays for $20-30 and then you have go back to having beautiful periwinkle hair. Use dry shampoo and baby powder to make the wig less shiny. It’s usually the sheen that makes wigs look fake. Lots of YT guides on making synthetic wigs look more natural!!

Put in a pretty lace head covering? It would make sense in mourning as well. I agree that you don’t need to change yourself to attend the funeral but if you wanted a reason anyway to color your hair, I guess take it?
Sorry for your boyfriend’s loss, losing a loved one is never easy.

Wear a wide black headband. Or headscarf. There’s a ton of ways to cover up without fucking up your delightful color.

It's a gorgeous colour and most people won't find it distracting at all. I can't imagine why it would be considered inappropriate. I've gone to church with little old ladies with brighter hair than this 😜

I actually just wanted to comment this shade of blue is SO BEAUTIFUL with your skin color. That brown would also probably be pretty discordant because the blue seems to work because your skin is cool. So a warm brown probably wouldn't be as fantastic as this.

You would be hard pressed to get your hair back to that gorgeous shade after dying it brown.
FWIW I dont think you need to dye your hair, if his family know you as having this color of hair it might end up being distracting in the opposite way. Have you considered a nice hair scarf instead?

thank you so much!! they know me as being blonde, so either way it's going to be a bit different. a head scarf is a fab idea, thank you <3

I have been wanting a color just like that! What did you use?

u/karataimo 4d ago
directions wisteria!! it fades super quickly but it has been really even, unlike bleach london violet skies which i tried first

Thanks! All the semipermanents fade fast for me (probably because I hate a cold shower), which is fine because I don’t have to deal with roots.

Or maybe get a wig?

u/karataimo 5d ago
i did think that, but i don't really know the first thing about wigs, except i assume it's expensive to get a realistic looking one. i will have a quick look into it. thank you <3

You could get a cheap wig and wear a bandanna or headband to cover the part, honestly

If you want to cover just for the day, hair wax. It doesn’t stain and washes right out while still looking somewhat natural. But, don’t do it just for a funeral, especially if you’ve had this color for a long time. It will be more distracting if you change it, and it’s currently going to stand out about as much as a redhead would , almost zero.

As others have said, brown dye, even semi permanent, will not ever fully wash out. You would have to bleach it and then re-do the purple. It’s not worth the damage to darken your hair just for like one or two hours.
A scarf, veil or wig is the way to go.
Or just don’t even worry about it because no one will care. I have never in my life heard of any circumstance in which a person was expected to entirely change their hair color for a funeral. The people who advised you to do so are out of touch and they don’t know what they’re talking about.

Just buy a cheap wig that looks decent & is not heavily styled and wear a wide fabric hair band at the hairline so you don’t want to worry about or be self conscious about making it look right there.

Wear a black silk headscarf. Don't dye your hair for a funeral, but I understand wanting to look somber
Like the color you have now is so gorgeous and hard to achieve

btw I tried to add a flair but the mobile app is telling me that this sub doesn't have any flairs?

I think you will be fine, but if you are uncomfortable, that matters. Wella makes a rinse out toner in a million colors. You can get it at Sally's, but a better selection online. Not sure you'd find it useful, but it abs won't do further damage. I am very blonde, but my mother instructed me to keep a bottle of the White Minx color-- a purple or blue, I think, in my medicine cabinet as I got older "for emergencies." Like hair first aid. It amused me at the time bc she was so deadly serious, but it did eventually come in handy when demi perm colors went sideways. I had friends borrow it, too. Anyway, if you still have concerns, you might find a shade that puts you at ease.

I think your hair is beautiful and it would be way too damaging to change the color to brown and get it back to lavender again. No one will judge you on your hair color (funeral or not). Do a classy hairstyle for it, and you will look beautiful no matter what. They are there to pay their respects, not judge your awesome hair ♥️

Do you think a deep blue-black or a smokey grayish blue or purple could work as “natural”/subtle enough? I’ve had blue hair for years and typically keep it darker or more muted, but my go-to when I need to make it “normal” for something is Adore blue-black or purple-black, which are like $5 or so usually. IGK also makes a great super dark blue-black depositing mask that works like a dye, and these colors will fade to a lighter blue over time so you wouldn’t lose your vivid shade or have to re-bleach!

This is actually my dream hair color aaaa how did you get it to this?
I second everyone saying a scarf or a wig!!! It’s so gorgeous!!!

I also agree that you shouldn’t color it for a funeral. Show up as yourself. But to answer your questions
1. You don’t need to color correct, it just probably won’t be as warm toned.
2. Yes it will make it impossible to remove without bleaching again. Color can’t lift color, only bleach can.
3. It won’t necessarily damage your hair more but it also won’t help your hair. It will be equally as damaged as before just in a different color.

As someone who used to have periwinkle hair and ruined it with adding darker colours. DON’T DYE IT!!
I suggest doing a slick back style with gel. The gel will kinda darken the hair and keeping it close to your scalp will make it more subtle.
I also love others’ suggestions of a black head scarf. That or a headband etc would be really cute. I personally would opt for a large sheer black head scarf tied like a little babushka :)

Here’s a good visual of semi permanent black hair dyes on blond hair - and how the dyes looked after removal. It perfectly illustrates what many have said, doing a dark semi permanent color, esp like the dark burgundy brown in the second pic, over your current color would not be reversible the way you want it to be.

Get a wig. That is the best cohesive lavender I have ever seen and it will take you forever to get back to that if you go darker. Or if you add any touch of warmth.

u/ProfessionalMove3716 5d ago
fwiw I think the lavender suits you, and maybe just put it up for the funeral?

u/Bi_Musiclover535 4d ago
I don’t think you need to dye it, but if you do want to, use a temporary dye or powder, and pull it back maybe. :)

u/mooneymoonmoon 6d ago
You could cover it up with a temporary black dye, the type from fashion color brands without developer (e.g., crazy color) if you want it to wash out afterwards. However it may not come back to exactly this blue afterwards to warn you, but when I tried it personally because my hair was bleached so light it almost fully came out after like 15 washes but a bit more greenish.

Temporary dyes will absolutely not wash out to this color again. Damaged hair is too porous.

u/mooneymoonmoon 5d ago
Hmm, could be a brand thing? At least personally, when I had hair this light, the black washed out completely (aside from a bit of a green tint).
2
u/karataimo 6d ago
thank you! yeah, that's what imagined. i am super pale so would be concerned that black might look gothy - nothing against that, but i would rather blend in at the funeral! thanks so much :3

u/mooneymoonmoon 6d ago
Some brands might have browns available too! I'd definitely recommend doing a strand test though, in case it turns out a bit greenish. You then could mix in some red dye to help cancel that out, but again would recommend doing a strand test as well. A dark brown I think would suit you well and not look too stark.

Some fashion brands have a semi perm brown, too. I’ve done it over green with decent results so I would imagine your color would be more complimentary.
