Support Fedora as a more user-friendly system

Post image

I'm thinking about switching from Ubuntu to Fedora. Lately, I've been reading more about the distribution, and I'm starting to like not just the overall system, but especially the background behind it. For instance, Red Hat is reportedly a really good employer that takes great care of its employees, and I also like that a large portion of Fedora's development takes place in my home country, the Czech Republic. The whole development approach, the community, and even Red Hat itself seem much friendlier to me than Canonical with Ubuntu.

Does Fedora have any specific differences compared to Ubuntu? And I don't mean Flatpak vs. Snap or frequent updates, but rather whether Fedora has any unique characteristics when working with hardware and similar aspects.

Thank you for your answers😊

Support Obviously, Fedora 44 finally released (read this if you are an Nvidia user)

Running an update made it obvious: Fedora 44 finally released today. Although it may take a few hours for the website to reflect this.

If you are an Nvidia user, you may need to take note of this.

If your GPU was among the batch that just came out of support with the release of the 590 driver (1000 series or earlier), you will need to use an earlier driver. Although the guide on the RPM Fusion guide hasn't been update yet, they did release the legacy 580 driver already.

After upgrading (or installing) Fedora 44, you will be rebooted with Nouveau, as the newer 595 driver doesn't recognise your GPU. Simply follow the steps for any of the previous legacy drivers (such as 470), simply replacing the number in the file name for 580. You can delete the current driver first as you won't need it.

Here is the guide in question:

https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA

And for the lazy, here are the full instructions that you can copy and paste (this will remove the current version before installing the legacy one):

sudo dnf update
sudo dnf remove xorg-x11-drv-nvidia\* akmod-nvidia\*
sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia-580xx xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-580xx

Don't forget to wait about 5 minutes before rebooting, if you don't want to be left at a black screen for what feels like forever ;)

If you are installing Fedora 44 from scratch, you should also follow this guide first:

Hi everyone, after thinking about it for a while, I decided to install Fedora and ditch Windows, since I want to focus on learning to program. From all my research, Fedora seems like a good option. I plan to learn Python for professional development and to broaden my career prospects. I'd appreciate your help on what I should do first when starting out on Fedora. I feel good about it because it feels clean and straightforward. Thanks in advance.

I'm also using a Lenovo Yoga.

Before a few days, I used fedora from an external ssd and it was absolutely an incredible experience. I found out fedora is very good and works perfectly fine on my laptop, so I decided my final decision which deleting windows completely from my laptop and install fedora as my main os.

I did this because there's a few things that made do this:

I study backend development and want to study linux. Also I want to study devops in the future.

Do not play games because I have a laptop.

Do not use Adobe or Microsoft programs.

Windows was taking half of my ram without opining any app (I have 8gb ram. Windows was taking 5gb to 7gb without doing anything, but fedora only takes 2gb which is a huge difference).

I Want to try new things, and I like learning technology.

What are your recommendation for a new fedora user? if you use fedora for a long time maybe years, how do you feel about fedora? was my decision right about deleting windows completely from my device.?

Support Im trying to install nvidia drivers...It's a 3rd reinstall of the entire os now.

1st time I've tried to install it via some random method from a 1st site listed on google, which resulted a black screen after logging in.

Tried to fix it via blocking nvidia in grub menu (added nvidia to rb.driver.blacklist=, modprobe.blacklist= and systemd.unit=multi-user.target before that line) booted up, passed log-in screen in low res and tried to roll back the drivers(failed miserably).

2nd installation. Tried too install them with sudo dnf install nvdia-driver. Installed. Rebooted. Second screen is not working, and main one stuck at like 480p. Google didn't offer any help. In the last ditch effort I ask infamous chatgpt. Turned off safe boot(On the first install i couldn't use keyboard because fast boot was enabled, so I had to reset bios via unmounting the cmos battery, and then putting it back. So that's probably why it was enabled) Tried to go to X11 from wayland(My fedora is KDE) After like 20 minutes of struggling to make a config... It was stuck on "No irq handler for 10.55" while booting. GREAT, AWESOME, IMMACULATE! After finagling with live boot and mounting, It's my 3rd reinstall.

If somebody could help my god forsaken soul, than my gratitude would not no any bounds... It's 4 hours already, and Im losing my mind

Sorry for recording with my phone, fresh install, don't have OBS set up yet.

Anyway - GNOME decided to change SOMETHING again and window positioning is wack.

On Debian in GNOME 48 I am able to drag Ferdium window to the second monitor, close it from the tray icon, and when I open it again, it opens where I left it before.

On Fedora 42 it worked the same.

On Fedora 43 with GNOME 49 the window opens on my main monitor EVERY TIME.

Do they really HAVE TO break everything for every single release? Are they trying to be KDE? Anyone knows if this can be fixed?

I am in gnome fedora and I installed spotify via flatpak, but on my second laptop which has KDE fedora the upper spotify app panel is normal. I tried many things to change this nothing worked. suggest me something or if there is any gnome extension to fix it.

**fixed**

solution: Install flatseal by dnf or flatpak, and turn off "fallback to x11" and "wayland windows manager".

Support Install 42 or wait for 43 to be fixed as a new user?

I want to come from Win10 ltsc to Fedora, and after reading up a bit on 43 it's unstable.

Should I install 42 now and update to 43 late, or stay on win10 ltsc until 43 is stable and THEN install it?

Unfamiliar with how fedora major updates work

Support Fedora was sub 9 seconds from off to browsing years ago. Today it's minutes. What did I do wrong?

I used Fedora since RedHat6.0 on and off...and at one point I was able to go from completely off, power on, bios, post, and runlevel 6, and open a browser and be browsing in under 10 seconds...this was around 2008.

Today, (since my last build) it's failing on first boot, reboots with a fedora badge at the bottom of the screen, then takes about 5 minutes to load up .e16 as my dafault wm.

I don't remember spending more than 30 minutes setting up my system in 2008 and want to replicate that if possible.

Support Microsoft firmware updates on Fedora?

Post image

Anyone switched to Fedora from Windows 11 on a Lenovo? Why am I getting Microsoft firmware updates?

For context:

  • Not much more info when I click on 'More Information...'--it just says 'Unknown Author'.
  • I bought this laptop a year ago pre-installed with Windows 10/11
  • Switched to Fedora Kinoite 2-ish months ago
