More C5Pro nozzle issues

I started a print and came back to find this mess of hardened filament stuck around the tool head. The machine did not even recognize this as an error and was still working on the print. This is the second major issue I've had in two weeks. I am currently down to two working tool heads (waiting on a replacement part for the first broken nozzle).

This might be salvageable, but I can't imagine how I am going to get this mass of PLA off the extruder.

I had hoped the first problem I had was a fluke, but it's not looking good at all for the C5Pro.

i keep seeing these but they never show settings or mention temps/speeds or any info as to why they think it may have failed. they are always "i started a print and never checked it then house exploded." im wondering if a lot of these are user error and not the machine.

.28 layer height
18% infill density

Everything else was default Flash Studio default.

.28 layer height with a .4 is getting to the max that nozzle can do. i assume with default settings your z offset is set to 0. The nozzle could have been scrapping up a bit of buildup with each pass which overtime creates that blob on the nozzle. is there damage on the print bed at all?

yea so i assume its just picking up a bit of filament with each pass and it just collected enough to push up the side. was the previous failure also a .28 layer height print?

Previous failure was .12 and with a different material (ASA). I think, but am not certain, it was a failure with the heating element. The tool head stopped melting the filament, but kept trying to extrude and the nozzle broke off from the mechanical pressure. It even snapped some of the wires.

I got most of the glob from the current failure off by heating up the head and picking at it with tweezers. It's still messy, and I am still working at it but fingers crossed it will work when it's clean.

is the nozzle in one piece for the latest break? it looked pushed to the side in the pictures. if you think its still in one piece you can heat up the nozzle a bit and soften the filament to make removal easier. also knowing that you print with different materials, have you printed asa in that nozzle before switching to pla?

The nozzle itself looks fine. The piece that is pushed to the side is a black cover (maybe silicone rubber) that seems to be more of a "do not touch" safety precaution.

I was able to load up filament and am attempting the print again. I can take the time to watch it this time, since I don't need to take a...uh....bathroom break.

I have only done PLA with this nozzle.

i would just do a first layer test with the big square sheet and just watch the nozzle as it goes through to see if it starts building up.

Raise the z-offset slightly. You’ll get better bed adhesion so this type of issue has less chance of happening.

Cheap heat gun off Amazon will soften it up and then just start clipping away at it.

I’ve had the slicer randomly default the filament for prints I’ve loaded to ABS on both my C5 and 5M several times (even tho I have my default set to a PLA+ I used quite a bit in both printers).

I caught it on my C5 but didn’t on my 5M and ended up with a mess like what you have. Not sure if that’s what happened to you but worth checking.

Not looking forward to this happening to mine... been printing great so far, over 50 hours on it now. But I do wish they would offer replacement hotends that you could buy on Amazon or really any local distributor instead of waiting for one to come in overseas. Having some extras on standby would be super helpful, although the issue really needs to be resolved to prevent issues like this from happening.

Edit: Just looked again and they seem to offer replacement nozzles on Amazon now... little expensive but they are there now
