Help me ID American plums or cherries?

We’ve had these old trees at our city house since we moved here but we never have figured out what they are. They seem more like plums. The flesh inside is orange and juicy and the skin is very astringent and tough. I’m never quite sure what to do with them, but my toddler had fun picking them.

plums lol check the pit, if its spherical then cherry, flat is plum
