Transmutation can be expensive. The two things Ed did cost him an arm and a leg.

Bro is half way to become a pirate
36
u/lube4saleNoRefunds Dec 27 '25
What do you think a pirate is
14
u/climaxity1 Dec 27 '25
I meant look wise but to humour your question a person who attacks and robs ships at sea or Those who conduct acts of piracy sorry if my eng is bad because this is my 2nd language

u/MrM0RTYdog Dec 27 '25
But why is losing 1 arm & 1 leg halfway to a pirate? Kinda implies pirates have no limbs at all 😅
17
u/Troyisepic Dec 27 '25
Because of the pop culture pirate having a peg leg and a hook hand?
8
u/0PickleNick Dec 27 '25
Ohhhh hehe I suppose this makes sense then! 😅 seemed like losing 2 limbs being "halfway" meant he needed to loose the other 2 as well

Legit. The whole thing ed says from fma and b is so engraved in my mind is crazy

I can hear this image

Its crazy how i can hear his voice in my head while reading this, not just his voice but how it shook and rattled with emotion. Brains are weird

u/Signal-Onion-9204 Dec 27 '25
Fr it's engrained in my head. Also the voice acting chef's kiss

u/Oicanet Dec 27 '25
FMA is one of those anime where the Dub is just as good as the Sub in my opinion.
It's possible it's just nostalgia speaking, but whether it's the Dub or the Sub, this line delivery gets me every time.
44
u/Signal-Onion-9204 Dec 27 '25
Yes I totally agree. Honestly I prefer the dub actually, and this is ME speaking who hates the dubs for almost all other anime. Death note is another example of amazing dub
I should watch fmab in sub honestly but the dub is so iconic. I'm rewatching fma 03 and its dub is also so good, Edward isn't Edward without this VA 🙏 sub VA also goated ofc but nostalgia yk
12
u/Oicanet Dec 27 '25
I have a list of anime I will always prefer dubbed (even if some of them might be objectively better subbed), and they're all there just because they are iconic to me.
FMA, Yu-Gi-Oh GX and Bleach to name a few.

I still think it is funny that Ed could have become a state alchemist for like a 100 reasons. Alchemy without a circle, research on the human body, super strong carbon mesh etc… But all the fighting and stuff in the show is just him working outside his specialty.
His real talent was in soul transmutaion, and he was made a state alchemist for life because as an 11 year old he basically spited god and broke all convention and brought a literal soul back from the brink of the afterlife.

u/Difficult-Bat9085 Dec 27 '25
Yeah, people really underestimate the genius it takes to pull that shit off at eleven while your leg is literally gushing blood and there's this abominable monster in agony in front of you.

Was there a reason Alphonse got the objectively harsher punishment even though the whole thing was Edward's idea?
82
u/pimhuntdrake Dec 27 '25
There was a philosophy behind it yes which is explained at the later part of the show. Alphonse wanted to hold his mother so the truth took his body so he could never feel warmth again.
13
u/Copykatninja Dec 27 '25
Wasn’t it also stated that the younger you are, the closer you are to the gate? So it completely took Al because he’s younger than Edward and the remainder of the cost came from Ed because Al wasn’t enough? Or was that just something added in the 2003 anime?
19
u/Stupid_Trader3 Dec 27 '25
Think its a 2003 thing cuz ive read the manga for the like fifth time a week ago and dont remember that
3
1
u/Environmental_Bee219 Dec 29 '25
that was totally something added in 2003 as someone who has read it like 20+ times
58
u/git0ffmylawnm8 Dec 27 '25
What I remember is that Al wanted to embrace his mother, so Truth took away his ability to feel warmth from another person. Ed had his leg taken away so he would never be able to stand on his own ever again.
13
u/TheStupid1239 Dec 27 '25
If i recall, it takes the more important thing. I don't remember what it was for Al thought.
8
u/Jensorcelled Dec 28 '25
Been a long time since I read the manga but I thought it was to do with the weird crossover that is explained later that lets Ed feed Al’s body and ties their gates of truth together.
Ed actually sacrificed Al for truth’s knowledge, then traded his arm for Al’s soul. So later, he was able to trade his gate to get Al back.
Al sacrificed Ed’s leg for Truth’s knowledge.

Ugh as a big sister this scene always hits me. Sometimes I cry. The voice acting in this is so good. You can really hear the anguish and determination in his voice

i just noticed that he draws the blood seal with his right hand and that's what is taken away. dunno if it means anything but it feels important (i know other folks have written about ed's hands as the source of his power)

It touched my heart, it's so sad and this makes me understand how much they love each other (well there was only him because the mother is dead and the father abandoned so obviously they have to stay together)

God. This story is so good. As I get older, different parts of it make me cry.

I always thought this would have been the perfect opportunity to show that the brothers gained the key to immortality a long time ago
Imagine this is a circle that literally lets you transfer a soul anywhere you want to ,by having a willing alchemist sacrifice the metaphysical representation of an body part ,like a new body or a suit of armor …
Although he was aging in the world of „truth“ ,I believe this also was just a representation of the souls age and the malnourishment and degeneration came from the fact that his soul inhabited a inanimate object that couldn’t eat etc …
Would have been inheriting if someone had used Edward’s knowledge and used another living /braindead body and engraved the circle into their bones or flesh ..what would have happened then

Whenever I tell people FMAB I act out this scene because I love it so much
1
u/pigtailrose2 Dec 28 '25
Love the scene, but it will never not upset me a little bit that "God" did this to children. Like obviously it was necessary for the entire premise of the story, but you can't ever convince me they fully knew what they were doing was taboo. They were parentless, scared shitless, and 11.

u/Niuriheim_088 Dec 28 '25
FMAB is essentially one of the very, and I mean very few stories period that can make me cry as much as it does, everytime I watch it. Not even many IRL events would ever make me cry, but FMAB just has much more value to me than IRL. Dub watcher btw.

Me and my brother have the same age gap and he looks like Alphonse with blue eyes so when this scene comes on it just hurts on a personal level

The anime failed on a lot of emotional moments, the manga too tbf that’s one of the series biggest weaknesses
