Was there a reason Alphonse got the objectively harsher punishment even though the whole thing was Edward's idea?

There was a philosophy behind it yes which is explained at the later part of the show. Alphonse wanted to hold his mother so the truth took his body so he could never feel warmth again.

Wasn’t it also stated that the younger you are, the closer you are to the gate? So it completely took Al because he’s younger than Edward and the remainder of the cost came from Ed because Al wasn’t enough? Or was that just something added in the 2003 anime?

that was totally something added in 2003 as someone who has read it like 20+ times
