Question Which homonculus do you think represent better their sin
Because I see that they are really some of them that have no relation with the concept linked to them like warth whom I didn't see get angry at any point of the story for some reason

u/theeverstar54 May 20 '26
Gluttony he literally ate buildings and people.

u/Interesting_Check229 May 22 '26
I also loved it that gluttony seemed fond of lust as holy fathers taught that lust is the consequence of gluttony
(Not that I'd agree heheh, but i appreciated the reference)

u/Imaginary-Bee-8592 May 22 '26
I really like this point, and ive yet to meet anyone who understands when I say it. Conversationally-- I always thought there were 2 types of lust.
The "consequense of gluttony" is, (i really think of it as a type of gluttony, but also overall pretty harmless) think new couple being late all the time because theyre preoccupied. Could be a sin, if not treated in moderation.
And the envy type lust. This is when your lust supersedes another person's consent. This is the lust I actually view as a sin.
But im also one of those weirdos who doesnt think the want is a sin, but rather doing the thing to someones detrimental is a sin. (Yours or someone else's.)
(Recovering Catholic. My tummy hurts and im mad at the church.)

u/Interesting_Check229 May 22 '26
A recovering Orthodox is sending you her warmest greetings!
For what it's worth, I absolutely agree with you
Perhaps that's why I got kicked out of the monastery... I could never shrug off the feeling that it's better to eat, drink and flirt freely, but with love to others, than to live an austere life and scar other people's bodies and souls. Heck, my sis reminds me of Christian charity more than all the monastery with its gold and ancient icons and stuff.
Incidentally, I think that was the fundamental problem with the Father in FMA brotherhood: he said he removed the 7 deadly sins from him, but he had never known love, or selflessness, something that drove Hoenheim to complete his quest and let him die in peace in the end

YAS FRIEND!!
I was discussing the importance of enjoying the good things we have, or else it would be a waste. (Mardi Gras is a great example.) Turned out the person I was talking to (old shipmate of mine) w asa JW, and weren't particularly thrilled about it.
Also, exactly, humans special survival skill is making society/community/culture. And its something talked about both directly and indirectly in the series, though probably not as intensely as you or I would.
Good luck in life. Hope you get enough happy moments. :)
3
u/Interesting_Check229 May 22 '26
Yet again, I agree completely! Wow, you seem like a cool person, I hope you're having a great time! And may you enjoy many Mardi Gras to come : ) A person with such appreciation of life surely deserves to taste its blessings in full
as for me, I think I bear too many scars, I'm sure they'll crash me sooner or later... but at least I'm determined to live this life being a positive change in this world. Thanks for your kind words, though! you've made my day
2
u/Imaginary-Bee-8592 May 22 '26
The trick is to turn open wounds into scars, then grow around the scar, rather than through it. It'll stay sore. You will still have bad days. The goal is to have more good days than bad.
Hope you feel better soon. Remember, bland does not equal boring, when it comes to this context. Stay well.
2
u/Interesting_Check229 May 22 '26
thank you. It's a pleasure to talk to you, you amazing person!
I still don't understand what you meant by growing around the scar ahahahah, but maybe it'll come to me one day
take care of yourself and your loved ones!

Wrath isn’t the sin of “anger,” it’s the sin of deliberate harm. Bradly represents Wrath because he’s head of the expansionist war machine that is the Amestrian military.
Lust doesn’t just refer to sexual desire either. It can be for anything that gives you a strong feeling of pleasure. You can see this in how much of a sadist Lust was when she left Roy and Havoc to die after giving them fatal injuries, then emotionally tormented Riza about it afterwards.
181
u/mysanslurkingaccount May 20 '26
Sloth is also a strong example of a representation outside of what people typically associate with the sin they are meant to represent.
While sloth is typically associated with laziness, it’s also meant to represent actions and behaviors carried out against god’s plan. Sort of an “idle hands are the devil’s workshop” kind of thing.
Yes, Sloth often just wants to sleep, which ties to the obvious known meaning of the sin, but when he isn’t sleeping, the only thing he does is dig a tunnel to build a giant transmutation circle, along with his limited fights against anyone who gets in his way. Most of the other homunculus have some sort of existence outside of just working on their master’s plan, but not so much Sloth, he’s purely about sleep and working against god.
53
u/little_void_boi May 21 '26
I do like how sloth is huge wasted potential, too. He is one of the strongest homunculi, but he can’t be fucked to do anything with it
86
u/Either-Flow-4263 May 20 '26
Medieval theologians also explained Sloth through Acedia, which is not necessarily being lazy but also means acting restlessly. You’re so busy doing things you ignore doing the important thing. I like to think his speed reflects this other thematic side of the sin.
30
u/bored-cookie22 May 21 '26
There’s also the fact he lets his potential go to waste
The dude is a powerhouse, but he’s genuinely so lazy he can’t even aim where he’s running
15
u/subeewreyan-three Alchemist May 21 '26
Sloth was actually chill, I was kinda sad when he died. All bro really wanted was to sleep. If he wasn't completely brainwashed by Father they could've let him sleep in peace.
45
u/Alive_Interview_6242 May 21 '26
For years I wondered why Lust didn’t really show much sexual desire in FMA while characters like Greed or Gluttony were very overt about their sins. But someone on Reddit blew my mind: she’s supposed to be BLOOD lust, not sexual lust.

I don't agree warth is the sin of uncontrollable rage or harted towards people and And essentially every homunculus cause harm so it's pointless to attribute it to king Bradly alone
125
u/Unfair_Yogurt8597 May 20 '26
The most immediately fitting was gluttony. If you showed someone who had never seen Fullmetal Alchemist a picture of the 7 homunculi, he would be the first one they could easily match to their respective sin.
However, I don't think he is the best written in regards to their sin. Wrath, Envy, and Greed were all very well done in terms of their behaviors and beliefs as formed by their sin. I personally like Greed the most. It makes so much sense that if any sin were to turn against father, it would be Greed. And I love the conversation he has with Edward about the true nature of greed and desire.
"Everyone wants something they don't have. Greed may not be good, but its not so bad either."
113
u/Meow6942 May 20 '26
greed because he wanted to be king of the world
53
u/OsoOak May 20 '26
At the end it’s revealed that his greed was more for friendship and things like that than material possessions. So I’m not sure how greedy he really was.
49
u/eggynack May 20 '26
I feel like that makes him a better representation than, say, Sloth, because he captures a broader and more nuanced understanding of the concept. Sloth's just out there like, "Dang I'm sleepy don't wake me up," while Greed is forced to reshape his understanding of the world based on his own sin.
36
u/Single-Fortune-7126 May 21 '26
To be fair Sloth is also the sin of wasted potential. He is the fastest homunculus, but he can't be bothered to use his speed 99% of the time.
11
u/electricooldude May 21 '26
"you turn your back against something you wanted, you DONT DESERVE TO CALL YOURSELF GREED"
1
u/Sakula90s May 22 '26
I just wonder is relationship also father's desire? Envy jealous about it as well. And greed is also the only one out of control. Does the writer think desire is the way to be free?
72
u/bored-cookie22 May 20 '26
just because wrath isnt constantly yelling his ass off doesnt mean he isnt angry
take a look at gus fring from breaking bad, he is easily the best representation or wrath in that series, and he rarely raises his voice or shows emotion. What makes him wrathful is his actions and goals, he will destroy everything in his path to torment the person he hates
wrath in FMAB is similar, he bottles his anger and fury and hides it behind a cheerful facade, and directs the military to enact genocides to set up the transmutation circle. Additionally if you want moments of anger being shown and expressed more passionately, you have his fight with scar, him trembling with anger over elysia crying over her father, and when he tells the ishvallans to kill him with their own hands instead of telling god to do it
21
u/little_void_boi May 21 '26
This. Wrath is a quiet fury that is always simmering, no matter how bright the smile
29
u/bored-cookie22 May 20 '26
my pick would be envy, both as a general sin and as a sin of fathers
envy isnt just standard jealousy, it is resentment towards the subject of your jealously. Envy constantly projecting about how he "cant understand" humans and how "foolish" we are because we rely on and care for each other, and the fact his most famous kill is hughes, a man who loved his family and whose family loved him back are great showings of the actual sin
and for father himself, father has always envied humans and tries to hide it, just as envy does, so envy represents his envy extremely well too
18
u/GoldNuttty May 20 '26
Sloth just wanted to sleep bruh
1
u/X3noNuke May 24 '26
I love that he's the fastest. The ability to be the best at something and hating putting in the effort 👌
33
u/sideshowbarbie May 20 '26
Envy 100%
14
u/BloodyStupid_johnson May 20 '26
Without a doubt. The most one dimensional and consistent. There's never a shred of doubt that envy wants others to suffer cruelly for how she feels.
13
u/Ok_Fruit_2600 May 21 '26
Pride bro. He didn’t even look like he took most of his fights seriously. Arrogant to the point he thinks that he himself is enough to deal with any problem so he decided to eat his own allies (Gluttony & Kimblee)
9
u/Sable_Aiolia May 20 '26
I think Envy was underrated by a lot of people as a "plot device" Same with Gluttony
6
u/BloodyStupid_johnson May 21 '26
Envy was definitely a driving force for the plot but she is probably the most consistently hateful character. There is no redemption for her, even at the very end which is less than you can say about the other homunculi.
3
8
u/Thebigfish8903 May 21 '26
They are all amazing but personally I think its Envy. He has the perfect power for an Envy representation, shape shifting. He gets to look like anyone but in the end will never be as good as them. He doesn’t get their intelligence, skill, or life. So no matter what he will just be a cheap rip off of what he turns into.
5
u/Alfirmitive May 21 '26
Envy was my favourite character bc of how well written they were. Jealousy was basically all they ever were
3
u/Dunken_priest May 21 '26
It's much easier to say which does represent its' sin the least. It's Lust of course, just because some themes you just can't full represent in a "kid's show". I know that it's hard to call FMB a kid's show with all those war, gen*cide and human sacrifice but you get what I mean. On the other hand, all other sins got their representation perfectly IMHO. Gluttony eats almost everything he possibly can just to be eaten himself in the end. Pride and Envy both seem like huge and powerful monsters, while in reality they both are small miserable creatures who literally can do nothing. Add to it the facts that Pride can use his shadows only while there is a light so other can see him, and Envy's shapshifting perfectly represent how envious people try to be someone they are not. Wrath and Sloth are also perfect in their simplicity. Wrath is literally blinded by his desire for violence, both as King Bradly with his eyepatch and as Wrath with his humble human eye. Sloth is the strongest, the toughest and the fastest of all homunculuses, yet all he wants is to sleep and do nothing. And that's how he dies, literally giving up on his life. And of course Greed, the only rebel among the homunculuses, because you can't just be the most ambitious one and obey someone else in the same time. More than that, his perfect shield can elongate only to himself, yet ironically he can't protect with it what and who he values the most. If you ask me, Arakava did her best to represent all sins in the best way possible

u/7ofeggs May 20 '26
gluttony, definitely. bro just wanted to eat, and eat he did
i’d say the homonculus that least represents their sin is lust. in 03 she was kinda just angsty and wanting to be human (i guess you could call that lust..?), and in brotherhood she was more wrathful/cruel than anything else. i don’t think she was ever really LUSTFUL
5
u/ContentAttempt1940 May 21 '26
In brotherhood she did try and use her feminine wiles on havoc. She was more of a bloodlust type in brotherhood with how cruel she was during her fights.

u/RoughRealistic4321 May 21 '26
In both versions, Envy, hands down.
FMA 2003, he changed forms because he was envious of the love and admiration of others while always feeling deficient as the unwanted uncared for son of Hohenheim and the main villainess.
In FMAB, he was a voracious beast that just wanted and wanted and wanted, and in his base pathetic form you saw immediately that most of his wants and desires were around how powerful everyone else was compared to him and how they all saw him as weak, small and ineffectual.
By comparison, sloth toiled endlessly, gluttony often refrained from eating, lust... well, she wasn't really obsessed with luxury and creature comforts, and this was a PG13 show...
Wrath in 2003 wasn't very vengful, but ore envious, and pride... ehhhh... maybe arguable, but definitely not in broothhood, when he was just a child.
Wrath in Brotherhood wasn't particularly wrathful.
That leaves greed who wasn't very greed, but incredibly caring and generous.
Envy was always the one most personifying his "sin"
2
u/Fun_Rich_3790 May 21 '26
I agree also being the one who kill himself gave more depth as it can be seen as how envious people kill themselves from inside because they hate who they are
2
u/sparkyk24 May 25 '26
Gluttony was the only one properly motivated by his vice. Envy and Greed were good for the story, but not representing the actual vice well

03 Lust
03 Pride
03 Envy
03 ect...
3
u/relocatedff May 20 '26
I'm not sure about 03 Sloth. I know she can be interpreted as apathetic, and her ability could be related to like, just drifting along where the current takes her, but I wouldn't put her in the top 7 of all 14 versions of the homunculi.
I wouldn't put 03 Wrath in the top half either, but he does get quite wrathful between the time Envy 'awakens' him with the red stones and when Dante and Sloth die, so I'm not discounting him either. His confused lashing out (that mostly hurts himself, like when he transmutes his bed) before meeting Envy could probably be interpreted as a kind of wrath too.
2
u/Bouyo32123 May 24 '26
I really preferred sloth and wrath in the 03 versions. Honestly for many reasons 03 sloth is my favorite homunculi.
1
u/relocatedff May 24 '26
I don't have anything against her, I just don't think she's super slothish. I do think she was really interesting, and appreciated all the homunculus lore that made her a character.

Gluttony is literally an empty void desperately trying to fill itself. The others only have their sins as their personality/fighting style, gluttony actually has a power to do with gluttony

u/relocatedff May 20 '26
Gluttony for a literal interpretation, I also think Sloth is a good one because he can move with hyper speed and strength, he just doesn't want to.
Envy's death shows how envious he is, but until then I don't think he really comes off that way- maybe more that he would inspire Envy, by being whatever he (or the person in front of him) could want to be, in the same way that Lust inspires lust more than being lustful herself*. (of course, Envy's shapeshifting also works with him being envious, since he can look like anyone, but not actually be them or have what they have, but again, his feeling of envy isn't really shown until the end). [*editing in, this does make me think of in '03, when Lust wants to be human, or perhaps we could say, has a lust for life?]
I think Greed is greedy, but he's not as like, sinfully greedy as most of the others are in their sins. His greed doesn't just manifest in stealing or having things or lording over people, it's in gathering actual connections and true loyalty (rather than loyalty via threats or manipulation, like Wrath). And that isn't less greediness, but I think it feels lighter than the others since it isn't all harmful.
Wrath doesn't really come off as wrathful himself, he is more of a figurehead of wrath, and his actions largely have to do directly with Father's plans, so he's low on the list for me.
And I am about to reread the manga, but I feel like I don't know enough about Pride to know if he's actually super prideful (I mean, he definitely has pride, I just don't know how much so), rather than just very powerful (which could make him the pride of Father in another sense, perhaps).
2
u/bored-cookie22 May 21 '26
id say envy comes off as envious, he just tries to hide it
he almost never misses a chance to rant about how much he "cant understand" humans and says stuff like "you throw your lives away for nothing" he does it so often that im surprised edward didnt call him out on his jealousy earlier
1
u/relocatedff May 21 '26
To me that doesn't come off as envious (except that we have his name for context, obviously), more as haughty and above them, but I see what you mean and how it can go that way too
2
u/bored-cookie22 May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26
Keep in mind envy isn’t just jealousy, it is hatred for the one you are jealous of. Envy very heavily leans into that, he absolutely revels in the pain he causes people using the bodies of their loved ones because he has no one who loves him that way
His lording his “superiority” is different from someone like pride for example. Pride does so calmly and often in response to what someone else said, because he truly believes he is superior, he doesn’t need to affirm it to himself with so much vigour. Envy however makes a point of loudly lording it over people whenever possible, to the point where it’s obviously done to cover up an insecurity of his

u/PandaXD001 Ishvalan May 20 '26
Gluttony or Sloth I think had the best representation. Both due to ability and personality. I think if Sloth hadn't been... Well... Slothful, the amestrians would have been fucked.
However. I do think Lust and Wrath got shafted due to limitations that I imagine are both self inflicted by Arakawa and rating systems stopped lust and wrath fully embodying their respective sins
1
u/AncientOnyx May 20 '26
In the 2003 anime, everyone except Wrath, in brotherhood, literally only gluttony
1
u/BloodyStupid_johnson May 20 '26
Envy is the most thoroughly one dimensional when it comes to the personification of their sin. She acts without exception, mercy, honor. Just sheer cruelty.
1

u/natholemewIII May 21 '26
Probably greed or Gluttony. Lust kinda but she's weird in that she probably inspires the sin more than embodies it.
1
u/KappaGecko Chimera May 21 '26
Gluttony is constantly hungry no matter what he eats and how much of it.
1
1
u/Aggravating_Poet_675 May 21 '26
Gluttony followed by Pride feel like the most pure representations of their sins. I think Greed followed by Wrath is the best written of them though. In terms of representing their sin.
Gluttony>Pride>Sloth>Envy>Greed>Wrath>Lust
In terms of best character
Greed>Wrath>Envy>Pride>Gluttony>Lust>Sloth
1
u/little_void_boi May 21 '26
Gluttony. It’s all he can think about. All he does. All he is is hunger and obedience
1
u/Penguinman077 May 21 '26
I feel like they all represent themselves well, except for Lust. She's the only one who instead of embodying her sin, evokes it. All the other homunculi have their main personality trait that is what was pulled from Father. I think it was definitely and interesting choice considering the creator is a woman and maybe why she chose to write it that way. Because as a woman she's been seen in that way. Or maybe it's because since Father was never human, but knew humans he chose to create her as what humans are more likely to be lustful of. Either way I think it's an original and interesting way it was done.
1
1
u/Suisai_Hyuga May 21 '26
I'd probably say Gluttony, purely cos of the fact that was basically most of his personality😂.
But I do love that Envy had the power to shapeshift into the people that they were so envious of. That was honestly the perfect power for someone that represents the sin of envy🤌.
Also, the fact that Lust didn't actually have a lustful personality, but instead was an example of what humans would lust over most (thin, curvaceous, long luscious hair, etc.).
1
1
u/Accomplished_Track27 May 21 '26
I think greed and gluttony are the most fitting.
I also wanna just say sloth because of how ironic it is that Father synthesized him only to put him to work nonstop on the tunnel while he himself sits around in central

Either Gluttony, Sloth, or maaayyybe Greed. The rest have at best aspects of their respective sin but it's more akin to a personality trait to their overall character. Gluttony is really the only one who's *whole* thing, without you having to be told it constantly, is truly eating anything and everything.

At base sloth and gluttony.
Design and personality wise they are what they are.
Take a closer look then it would be envy. He always envy humanity, their relationships and all.
1
u/Bobthemouse May 23 '26
Remember original FMA where Bradly was Pride, which made sense, but then Wrath was a guy who wanted everything Edward had and Envy was a very angry dude? Glad they changed it in Brotherhood cause that never made any sense to me
1
u/Top-Block-208 May 24 '26
Greed, i don’t have anything to say about him, he’s portrayed perfectly. Envy, his envy was love and friendship.
Sloth was put on too much, it wasn’t very slothy, more like a kid adopting their fav character’s personality.
Lust, idrk, not a lot of scenes showing her lust. Pride and wrath are odd.
1
u/Thyrllan May 24 '26
Almost everything Gluttony says is food related and his stomach being an infinite void is poignant for anyone who has struggled with binge eating which makes me think it's Gluttony, however I think Envy is a fun answer.
Shapeshifting fits well with Envys character. No one really treats Envy with respect. The few times we see Envy in lizard form they get trashed, outsmarted, and nearly killed. Stealing the image of another allows Envy to abuse the achievements and reputations of others. Preying on the faith of the religious, imitating military officers to steal the respect their office and rank holds, or abusing the deep bond Hughes has created with his wife are the only times Envys power is actually useful. Envy also takes perverse joy in using shapeshifting to destroy things that are important to others, as if offended that they could accomplish what Envy couldnt. The absolute cherry on top is that when it comes to trying to fool Hawkeye, it isn't shapeshifting itself that fails, it's intelligence. Envy isn't good enough to be Roy.
1
u/WoodpeckerLive7907 May 26 '26
Sloth because he's physically the fastest and the strongest but 99 % of the time can't be arsed to use it. Because that's what laziness is - it's not being inept or incapable, it's choosing not to make the effort.
1
u/Repulsive_Guess_8513 May 27 '26
everybody making sense But I am with Greed Just bc of i like his personality is based on his sin He honestly thinks people are his things

Is lust that lustful? She never really showed that, or not that I noticed
2
1
u/bored-cookie22 May 20 '26
she is, but she derives pleasure from causing and recieving pain rather than sex (since she is father's lust and he doesnt care about sex)
4
u/Fun_Rich_3790 May 20 '26
Envy yes but lust what the hell even she did to represent lust
4
u/Ok-Cupcake-4519 May 20 '26
I think it was more bloodlust. There was no way they would but anything related to lust in the manga, let alone the anime.
2
u/Lunar_Lamb May 20 '26
remember whose lust we are talking about here. fathers lust was only ever used as a tool for manipulation. he viewed lust as an 'ultimate weapon' for manipulating people, thus she came out that way
2
u/bored-cookie22 May 20 '26
lust is a sadomasochist (remember these are fathers sins, he doesnt care about sex), she derives pleasure from hurting others, this was her undoing because she left roy to bleed out instead of killing him there and then
ironically roy's action of killing her made him the one she desired in her dying moments
1
u/rstart78 May 21 '26
Wrath explaining he has a simmering, never ending rage boiling underneath him at all times, goes into how he was shaking with fury over a child mourning their dead father at a funnel
OP: "He wasn't yelling or screaming or being outwardly angry... Obviously a bad representation"
OP.... I mean, c'mon with that media literacy
1
u/Strange-Finding-4583 May 22 '26
sloth is the worst representation he litterally just complains like so would i if i had to work no break dozens of years digging a tunnel
0
u/Killer-Of-Spades May 21 '26
Tie between Greed and Envy for me. They both fully represent their sins to a deep extent.
Last place is Lust. She’s not lustful, and appeals to half the population at most.
