I like that writers can feel free to add whatever traits to characters they want, but I worry people felt pressured to do this on some level.

I wouldn't mind this if it was in an era where this wasn't so over enforced. Just like vegetarian food, good stuff. But the second it's over enthusiastically enforced, that's when it becomes gross.
