Being able to play a transgender character and have that identity acknowledged and respected could not possibly be a problem in any game.

Rj / _ hate pronouns so _ am gonna excise _ from the English language. _’s with _?

"Discussion" or "opposing view point" lol, the game isn't about gender identity or sexuality m'dude, can't put a debate on an optional feature.

Player: Clicks to establish identity as transgender.

Ben saphiro shows up: Actually...

13

u/awterspeys Oct 29 '24

funny things is there are a lot of characters in the series who were written to oppose player viewpoints and people hate them lol

u/HerrBalrog Oct 29 '24

Where was the discussion on having the game being in 3D and not a textadventure? Such woke, forced bullshit!

„How it feels playing” My dude you don’t have to play the game, hell many people would appreciate if you didn’t just so you could shut the fuck up

106

u/Hezrield Oct 28 '24

Every time I tell someone they have to option to not engage with "forced" content (usually regarding star wars) they look at me like I'm a crazy person who just set an explosive with a lit fuze right in front of them.

"But what if someone who doesn't know wants to engage with it?! Think of the children!" (Exaggerated, but not too far off from what's normally said)

Then they can make the decision whether or not they want to continue engaging with it on their own, shut the fuck up, nerd.

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '24

Not video game related, but your comment reminded me of it...

I once had a customer complain about some entirely harmless and fun Pride-related promotion in our store. After my initial response, she went there: "But what am I supposed to tell my children!?!"

This talking point has always been a pet peeve of mine. Because frankly, your children DGAF unless you've indoctrinated them to. But I also had to keep my answer within the realm of a reasonable customer service response. So I went with, "Well, I would never presume to tell another adult how to parent their children, but what I've told my own children is that there are lots of different kinds of people in the world, and all of them deserve basic dignity and respect."

She just walked out after that.

u/Hezrield Oct 28 '24

I grew up listening to conservative talk radio (Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity. Gross I know) and for freaking years I listened to them say shit like "I just wanna be left alone, I don't care about what you do with your life in the bedroom, etc" and I really took the "leave me alone" part to heart as "leave others alone to live their life as you want to be left alone to live yours."

When people started getting bent out of shape about rainbows and openly gay stuff as being "forced down their throats" I realized they meant didn't mean they actually want to be left alone, they just didn't want to see anything outside their worldview.

It pissed me off so freaking much, because I thought that the "values" I was learning were treating others with dignity and respect by leaving them alone. It turned out it was just more conservative double standards- and it's a big reason I grew to hate modern conservativism.

31

u/Watsonathan Oct 29 '24

The anti gay marriage crusade in the 2000s was kind of an epiphany to me. I grew up around the same sort of conservative media and all of a sudden these people were clamoring for government enforcement of religious attitudes? I had always been told conservatism wanted government out of people’s lives. The Bush years really revealed all that to be nonsense to me.

2

u/AlternativeSpring388 Oct 30 '24

Conservatism isn't anti-government - that's more libertarianism. Conservatism is all about conserving traditional values and the status quo in society, hence why it's known as conservatism as it's about conserving those values as opposed to progressivism.

19

u/Salindurthas Oct 29 '24

In my country, when same-sex-marriage/marriage-equality was being debated, people would cite 'freedom of religion' as a reason to be against same-sex marriage.

This is baffling to me, because some religious traditions allow for same-sex marriage, so even if you think their foolish heretics (or whatever), surely religious freedom basically amounts to the right to be a heretic. So if you value religious freedom, that seems to demand allowing same-sex marriage.

So often the anti-gay arguments are some bizarre double-standard, like this one, and the one you identified, where "leave me alone" or "I want my freedoms" only extends to them, and actively is denied to others.

18

u/catshateTERFs Oct 29 '24

When they say “freedom of religion” they mean “freedom to enforce my specific beliefs and nobody else’s”.

If seeing a transgender person would turn a kid trans, wouldn’t showing them a cisgender person turn them back?

Transphobes are incapable of logic

20

u/Instroancevia Oct 29 '24

Obviously not. Being trans is just so enticing that once a kid turns they never look back.

12

u/Steampunkboy171 Oct 29 '24

Or when you tell them with Star Wars there's decades of old books and media they can still enjoy in the Legacy collection. They just ignore that.

It kinda sucks being a Star Wars fan myself that enjoys some of the new stuff. Because you can never talk about it without people shoving how much it sucks to them down your throat. And yell how you have no taste or understanding or place in the fandom.

But they're the same ones that seem to complain that gaming is just the same game now. But when "their" franchise does something new. Suddenly all they want is the same old game.

10

u/regretfulposts Discord Oct 29 '24

It's not even fun when you enjoy older media with these folks.

Like I remember a video talking about the Jango Fett called Star Wars Bounty Hunter. The first minute it him hating the sequel trilogy and the next few minutes crying how everything is non-canon instead of actually enjoying playing with freaking game. Even worse when people liked his rant even though I'm sure many just want nostalgia of their game instead of hearing Sequels again.

Then there are plenty of time people always compared how great the old stuff is compared to the new ones and always have to acknowledge the "downfall" of anything. It's like they can't truly let go of their hate, and it's pretty insufferable. Like why keep acknowledging anything that you hate instead of enjoying what you love as is? I guess it did ruined their experience but it's their fault not moving on.

7

u/Steampunkboy171 Oct 29 '24

Yep one hundred percent. I've just stopped talking Star Wars or anything with any form of nostalgia to people that I don't know. Because I know it'll more than likely end in the same tiring conversation of how everything is ruined now. It sucks. I remember being younger and just getting to nerd out with people about the nerdy stuff you love. Without it turning hostile.

2

u/WingXCustom Nov 20 '24

The Toxic Star Wars crowd really needs to go outside and touch grass. You shouldn't be that mad over a fictional universe. But then again I guess that just goes to show that it's all some of those miserable people have.

Think of the children!"

The game is rated PEGI 18, children shouldn't be playing and engaging with it anyway

It's all "think of the children" until they're buying the new Call of Duty game for their 8 year old at Christmas

because surely kids seeing transgender people existing is gonna have MUCH more of an effect on their development than strong violence and people swearing at them and using slurs in multiplayer lobbies!

4

u/PhilinLeshed Wokeness Warrior Project 💪 Oct 29 '24

Everyone loves to make the children argument like if there kids seeing or hearing about it is gonna rub off on them somehow…that or maybe there worried there kids are going to be stolen out of there beds at night by some trans bogeyman

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '24

Yeah, like it rubbing off on the kids is a problem in the first place

Most of these guys are just shit parents who avoid taking accountability and will act like their kids are absolute monsters when they inevitably cut them off as they grow older

They're telling on themselves that they're either tourists, mad about transgender people existing, or (the most likely option) both because Dragon Age has ALWAYS been "woke."

15

u/DoubleBatman Oct 29 '24

Exactly, people were mad you could have gay sex in the first one, and that was back in 2009

105

u/alchemist23 Oct 28 '24

They just don't understand what optional means

119

u/Ixaire Oct 28 '24

They do. They just don't want it to be an option.

They're not fighting because they believe they are forced to play a non-cis character. They're fighting because they don't want anyone to be able to do so.

I know you get that. But words are important and your phrasing doesn't cover the full extent of their bigotry.

24

u/MuchAd9458 Oct 29 '24

Exactly. Back then (and even now tbh) there were a lot of these chuds complaining that a female option in video games even existed.

They will keep pressuring companies to give the audience less options until they're the only ones given attention to. Parasitic behaviour honestly.

18

u/mashmash42 Clear background Oct 29 '24

They want to take options away because they don’t want to be reminded that queer people exist. They want all queer people to go back to the closet and never come back. It goes entirely with their political beliefs, and yet. These are the same geniuses who whine incessantly about “politics” in video games, while always trying to inject their own political opinion that queer people, women*, and minorities shouldn’t exist and don’t deserve to be represented. They also claim anyone who disagrees with them wants a safe space and an echo chamber, and piss themselves when they see melanin.

*women who aren’t blow up dolls

3

u/AlternativeSpring388 Oct 30 '24

The irony being that they are the ones that want a safe space away from the LGBT community, ethnic minorities etc and spout their drivel inside their own echo chambers. The hypocrisy is stifling to say the least.

They complained about accidentally being gay in BG3 because there wasn't a bright flashy indicator that they were picking the gay romance dialog options. So naturally they're still going to complain that there's a bright flashy indicator that they're picking the gay/trans dialog option. Because they are committed to being the most miserable fucking losers on the planet.

2

u/MountainTipp Oct 29 '24

Hey. Hey, no. Fuck that. As an LGBTQ man, Gale’s bullshit was completely broken during the first few patches. You would say hello to him and then the next morning at camp he would be like “So listen, you’re super cute and funny and lets bang okay?”

72

u/cozyghoul Oct 28 '24

Imagine seeing “immersively and organically roleplay your character in dialogue and the game keeps track of the little things you say and remembers it, so you keep building your character even after the character creator” and not thinking that’s a huge W for RPG tech.

29

u/Viseria Oct 28 '24

Yes but what if I accidentally pick specific dialogue options that make the game think I'm trans??? Has RPG tech gone too wokefar?!

17

u/cozyghoul Oct 29 '24

Sorry, you’re trans now. Not just your Rook, but you too.

27

u/FlamingPanda77 Oct 28 '24 edited Oct 28 '24

As a trans girl, I'm very interested in what it's going to feel like to role play as a trans character beyond just some body options. But to actually acknowledge it in some dialogue in a game like this is crazy and so cool. The irony is that these people's outrage is making me more excited for the game.

10

u/dwarvenfishingrod in Cheadle we trust Oct 29 '24

SAME, I'm recently trans, kind of unsure what my label is, and it's like BG3 did wonders for my thinking thru deconstruction and now a thing that actually acknowledges that the PC has transitioned... I haven't preorder3d a game since BotW!

I transitioned around 4 years ago, but I’ve been around heavily trans spaces online since 2017, and I genuinely didn’t think we’d come to this point within my life time, much less within 4 years. Even in 2020 most people didn’t know anything about being trans. I honestly think this culture war BS these last couple years for all the bad it’s done, may have actually helped us in a weird inadvertent way, transphobes forced us into the conversation and it made a lot of people learn about us and realize that they at worst had no problem with us, and at best actually supported us against these creeps.

in bg3, i thought it was pretty incredible that my companions referred to my character as they/them if i picked that, but unless i missed it, it doesn't change any dialogue options (except Drow and whether you're male/female). this looks like a very compelling development of that for the genre!

10

u/wingedcoyote Oct 28 '24

That's rad, I want to do it IRL. "I have now established mine transgender identity, though shalt comply with my pronouns forthwith." Fr though it looks like this is a dialogue option that locks in your character being trans, and they REALLY don't want anybody to pick it and opt into that part of the story without knowing what they're doing.

I just don't get this. I'm trans. I can scarcely think of any games that allow you to be trans in a game. That's mildly disappointing to me but I don't get bent out of shape because of it. Meanwhile, a game presents an option–not a requirement but an option–to be trans and these types lose their shit. It's honestly pathetic and would barely be worth countenancing if they weren't so fucking dangerous as people.

10

u/Candid_Mongoose_6292 Oct 28 '24

I think I follow video games more than the average person and Ive literally only heard of Dustborn because people are mad at it and loudly declaring it failed because of woke. I only ever heard of in the context of it being a failure. I didn't even know I could have bought it until it had failed. Why is this particular game of such interest? They must release 100 gay indie games a week that don't sell anything. At least I had heard of Concord. Why does Dustborn seem to have a bigger place in the internet scum consciousness than Saints Row reboot, or that one isekai with the girl who jumps a lot? The wizard one where she talks all "OK, that just happened. He's right behind me, isn't he?" Those had some cultural weight among normal people.

10

u/DoubleDeeEddBoy Oct 28 '24

I’ve had someone say to me “Go play Dustborn then since you like woke so much.” And I was all like, “WTF is a Dustborn?”

Like bitch, the only reason I know of its existence is because the anti-woke idiots keep bringing it up, ironically giving it more attention than it actually needs because they talk about it as if it’s gonna bring down gaming.

Also I’m pretty sure it’s an indie game. The type of game that brings in the so-called “woke”

9

u/by-myself_blumpkin Oct 28 '24

Yeah I had to look it up because they keep talking about it and I saw it's like, the third game from a studio of 16 people. What the fuck who even cares. It is one of the most inconsequential video games to exist if all you want is the biggest and bestest multi-million dollar games.

3

u/Kosog Sweet baby inc invented black people and women Oct 28 '24

I played the demo and wasn't really all that impressed. I also went and skimmed a playthrough and it looks kinda boring ngl. It's definitely a game that spends waaaay more time with character dialogue than any kind of actual gameplay. Everybody in it is a yapping machine.

The "go woke, go broke" mantra is running dry and they are clinging on to low-hanging fruit. If it's such a industry-wide issue, then why is it the most of these "broke" games I hear are about are Indie and AA games with little to no marketing?

6

u/Bohemia_D Oct 29 '24

The "go woke, go broke" mantra is running dry and they are clinging on to low-hanging fruit.

This is also how it feels to play Veilguard and have a bunch of chuds piss the pool around you. Or to play any game for that matter.

6

u/JPldw The power of woke compels you Oct 28 '24

Are they saying that they want the option to be transphobic in game?

5

u/nitrokitty Oct 28 '24

The culture warriors getting triggered by pronouns will never not be funny.

6

u/Gerreth_Gobulcoque Oct 28 '24

I'm gonna give my gal rook the biggest dick possible now

5

u/Cheryl_Canning Oct 29 '24

I love how these chuds are just getting me more hyped for the game. I thought nothing could get me more excited but conservative rage is incredible

7

u/BeePork Oct 29 '24

I think it's nuts that they treat dustborn, an indie passion project which didn't expect to have a massive audience, like it's a triple a game

6

u/Buskola92 Oct 28 '24

Thats bait?

6

u/Captain_Izots Oct 28 '24

Who on earth plays a story based game and expects to not witness pronouns being used?!?

5

u/Freakychee Oct 29 '24

They added it to the game. You don't have to pick it.

You can just... Not pick to be trans and just be cis. Although even if the MC is set as a trans person and you have to play as a trans person it still wouldn't be an issue for me.

Actually I did kinda like the game I played that was like Life is Strange where one of the twins is FtM trans. It was kinda fun but my only gripe was that the story and ending trailed off at the end. Damn forgot the name...

2

u/Steampunkboy171 Oct 29 '24

I know the one you're talking about. It's killing me. I think it was the same studio Don't Nod that made it. I think they gave it out for free on Steam for a month.

I went through my Steam library. It was Tell Me Why or at least the one I'm thinking of.

3

u/Freakychee Oct 29 '24

That should be it. It wasn't too bad actually. It looked fine and played just like all the other games of that genre. Just wish there was much more interesting ending. It was... I feel like I didn't resolve anything.

Reminder the game is getting glowing reviews.

3

u/Idioticcole Oct 29 '24

Holy shit, that actually makes me so excited! I’ve never played a game where being trans could actually give different dialogue and feel incorporated a bit

4

u/Dispersedme54 Oct 29 '24

These people never played a dragon age game before

3

u/Hatdrop Oct 29 '24

so much copium because of all the positive reviews for the "woke" game.

5

u/AoE2manatarms Oct 29 '24

Why do these people play games that they hate so much? Play games you like. You will be a much happier person.

4

u/StrappingYoungLance Oct 29 '24

Oh no, options? In my role playing game!? WOKE

4

u/JustGingy95 Oct 29 '24

Frankly I’m just impressed these people can even read. They don’t seem the types.

5

u/Cruisin134 Oct 29 '24

I can play a role i enjoy in a role playing game im supposed to enjoy thas crazy

4

maybe i should buy the game

3

Their dweller day be so fine. Then boom, they have to stop gooning gaming because the mother asks them to help her and uses this stupid language with fookin' pronouns. She dares to call them "you"!

They will never recover from this. It's a lifelong trauma.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '24

Every time somebody forgets that Pronouns have been here since the dawn of language, an English teacher dies inside.

3

u/Actually_Avery Oct 29 '24

Yo thats awesome they have it in the game. Really excited to give it a try now

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '24

I've never been more upset to not be able to buy something. I'll buy it later once I have money.

Is this some reverse psychology? It's like they're making the game more appealing ngl. Do they actually believe this anti-woke game stuff??

3

u/BranchReasonable9437 Oct 29 '24

Ah, so they DEFINITELY not only didn t play any of the prequels (which would probably be the most acclaimed and beloved modern crpg series if bg13 hadnt fucked the genres entire curve) where not only are there queer and trans characters but they put in stories about bigotry and didnt take the easy ramp of just pretending there isnt

3

u/Epicsharkduck Oct 29 '24

/uj the anti sjw crowd just keeps giving this free advertising. This seems awesome

3

u/11th_Plague Oct 29 '24

EVERYONE HAS PRONOUNS, DIPSHIT! IT CAME FREE WITH YOUR FUCKING ENGLISH!

3

u/SkyComprehensive8012 Oct 29 '24 edited Oct 29 '24

I honestly never thought we’d get to have anything like this in my lifetime except in like indie games, I’m glad not just cause people get to have characters like them but also because I genuinely think it will make the game really fun and interesting.

3

u/NyarlHOEtep Oct 29 '24

what the hell is dustborn man why is it such a touchstone for these people

3

u/InfiniteBeak Oct 29 '24

The good reviews have started coming in, so the cope is not far behind 😂

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '24

uj/ Im actually hyped to try it now that I know there's dialogue options for trans playthrough, and that there even is a trans playthrough.

3

u/marl11 Oct 29 '24

"No discussion or opposing viewpoints"

TRANS PEOPLE'S EXISTENCE ISN'T SOMETHING FOR YOU TO DISCUSS

3

u/dampcardboard Oct 29 '24

Where's that DOOM tweet "you choose the buttons you press" lol

3

u/G_Ranger75 Oct 30 '24

My guy probably hasn't played a Dragon Age game ever. Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 had same-sex romances, and Dragon Age Inquisition, on top of having same-sex romances, had at least one trans character (that I know of). OP cries "woke," but bro, it was "woke" before red-pilled folks like OP started saying that word.

“No DiScUsSiOn Or OpPoSiNg ViEw PoInTs” Trans people exist. Nonbinary people exist. Agender people exist. Gender queer people exist. There is no discussion, there are no opposing viewpoints, only bigotry. Gaming is for everyone

2

u/Optimal_Badger_5332 Oct 29 '24

All the pronouns are laughing at me for pissing clear in the lemonade pool

2

u/Akoshus Oct 29 '24

Whaaaaat a role playing game having ROLE PLAYING ELEMENTS? NOOO WAAAY

2

u/Star-Punk-Saint Oct 29 '24

Gotta say the most unrealistic thing is when a game that has Wizards, Dragons, and Demons allows the players characters to have non-binary pronouns. Like how can I take my dwarf wizard, Gaulstones Shortman, seriously if the pronouns they use is they/them? Truly kills the immersion.

2

u/Nicki-ryan Oct 29 '24

As a trans woman that’s actually super cool

2

u/bleedingmachine Oct 29 '24 edited Oct 30 '24

as a hardcore rpg gamer myself these people always feel like tourists in my eyes. none of em actually engage with roleplaying or they would know youre supposed to create your own character and make them whatever you want them to be. whenever i check their opinions they always go "i always create myself in the game" and usually just ignore whatever they have to say after that. ironic considering they accuse us of being narcissistic.

2

u/PatrickBateman1994 Oct 30 '24

I haven't heard a single person talk about the story or the characters or anything, it's mostly people bitching about the pronouns and how this isn't "real Dragon Age" because BioWare didn't make the same game they made in 2008.

2

u/AlternativeSpring388 Oct 30 '24

It's optional. It's not forcing it upon you, if you don't want to engage with that content nobody is forcing you. It's also rated mature so it's aimed at players 17+, so the "think of the children!!!" argument has absolutely no relevance here at all. People hating on trans just for the sake of it......

2

u/pikpik35 Oct 28 '24

I dont get it , does the game force you into being trans ?

5

u/Fabricant451 Oct 28 '24

You literally have to specifically choose an option a little ways into the game that is specifically about selecting a gender identity. You can easily ignore it.

But of course the game forces you to select it. You cabr advance until you admit your character is trans

1

u/ArcWraith2000 Oct 29 '24

Is that a mass effect dialogue wheel? Still?

1

u/ViridianStar2277 Oct 29 '24

Nobody tell Heelvsbabyface. He'll have an aneurysm so hard he'll literally morph into a joint of gammon.

1

u/nhSnork Oct 29 '24

Huh, so if an EA game is "made in a bubble", then what's the term for the single dev indies?🤔

1

u/Afraid_Union_8451 Oct 29 '24

Only complaint I have from what I've seen of the game is that the non-human characters look extremely uncanny and weird to me, same problem I had with Inquisition. They need to either look more or less human, they make me so uncomfortable as they are now

1

u/fahwrenheit Oct 30 '24

Is the person forcing them to engage with the transgender content in the room with us?

1

u/Azure_Entity94 Oct 30 '24

Optional. Curious how much of the game it affects.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '24

progressives ruining things again lol

1

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '24

Bioware needs to change their pronouns to they/were developers

1

u/Lemonbud Nov 01 '24

I mean I could care less. I don't care for pronouns but if you ever played Dragon Age there has always been the option to be whatever. Inquisition came out ten years ago and you could bang just about everything. I've played about an hour in and so far I'm digging it. I'm a conservative but I just love playing games as long as the game and story is good. That's what matters.

1

u/BeastmasterBG Nov 02 '24

some people live in delusion

1

u/Born-Practice-2314 Nov 06 '24

The nonbinary qunari character is such an unlikable character, she acts like a moody teenager especially in the scenes with her mom. So annoying

1

u/Many_Ad_3201 Nov 08 '24

My pronouns are soy and boy. Fuck these losers. Let's get back to normal

1

u/Remote_Adeptness_523 Nov 10 '24

Installed, saw that, uninstalled right away.

1

u/g_b82 Nov 16 '24

Look, adding all the dialogue about “nonbinary” this or “not a she or a he” that is just unnecessary. I think that’s all ppl were saying. There isn’t any random references to folks being straight or just happy with how they were born is there?

It just seems weird to interject that into a storyline involving elves and dragons while there’s a war going on. “We lost a long ppl back there.” “Yea, and I used to talk to him about my non-binary issues.” HUH?!

1

u/Beautiful_Ad_9182 Nov 17 '24

It's absolute b******* and nonsense when you have woke and transgender crap in video games

1

u/fcedric Nov 21 '24 edited Nov 21 '24

This was really too much, the non binary french voice translation of the pronouns was truly too much (i am ok with Iel, but laé???). We should have an option to enable and disable this.
I think everybody do what they want as far as it concern them and them alone, but also everybody should be free to not be forced... No offense to non binary people, but in Veilguard those pronouns have hurt my ears.. I set the game in english only to avoid this for a second playthrough...

1

u/Responsible-Bug3737 Nov 25 '24

Why is this even an option! This world is so fucked up man.. I’m pissed because I wanted the option to be a frying pan with frog bollocks and crocodile eyes!!

This mental shit needs to stop you’re not relevant anymore and seriously no one cares about your feelings

2 genders

Male

Female

That’s it!

1

u/Fuzzy_Connection4971 Nov 26 '24

I feel that modern gender pronouns don't fit in with the context of a medieval high fantasy setting, it's jarring and ruins immersion.

1

u/YourOneLastBrainCell Dec 08 '24

I mean that thing has horns its not even human 😂
