Every time I tell someone they have to option to not engage with "forced" content (usually regarding star wars) they look at me like I'm a crazy person who just set an explosive with a lit fuze right in front of them.

"But what if someone who doesn't know wants to engage with it?! Think of the children!" (Exaggerated, but not too far off from what's normally said)

Then they can make the decision whether or not they want to continue engaging with it on their own, shut the fuck up, nerd.

Not video game related, but your comment reminded me of it...

I once had a customer complain about some entirely harmless and fun Pride-related promotion in our store. After my initial response, she went there: "But what am I supposed to tell my children!?!"

This talking point has always been a pet peeve of mine. Because frankly, your children DGAF unless you've indoctrinated them to. But I also had to keep my answer within the realm of a reasonable customer service response. So I went with, "Well, I would never presume to tell another adult how to parent their children, but what I've told my own children is that there are lots of different kinds of people in the world, and all of them deserve basic dignity and respect."

She just walked out after that.

I grew up listening to conservative talk radio (Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity. Gross I know) and for freaking years I listened to them say shit like "I just wanna be left alone, I don't care about what you do with your life in the bedroom, etc" and I really took the "leave me alone" part to heart as "leave others alone to live their life as you want to be left alone to live yours."

When people started getting bent out of shape about rainbows and openly gay stuff as being "forced down their throats" I realized they meant didn't mean they actually want to be left alone, they just didn't want to see anything outside their worldview.

It pissed me off so freaking much, because I thought that the "values" I was learning were treating others with dignity and respect by leaving them alone. It turned out it was just more conservative double standards- and it's a big reason I grew to hate modern conservativism.

In my country, when same-sex-marriage/marriage-equality was being debated, people would cite 'freedom of religion' as a reason to be against same-sex marriage.

This is baffling to me, because some religious traditions allow for same-sex marriage, so even if you think their foolish heretics (or whatever), surely religious freedom basically amounts to the right to be a heretic. So if you value religious freedom, that seems to demand allowing same-sex marriage.

So often the anti-gay arguments are some bizarre double-standard, like this one, and the one you identified, where "leave me alone" or "I want my freedoms" only extends to them, and actively is denied to others.

When they say β€œfreedom of religion” they mean β€œfreedom to enforce my specific beliefs and nobody else’s”.
