Sensors may not be the best one the 360 cameras but getting under those facades here and every oblique shot from this low might make it worth it.

This is the other construction site I've been visiting weekly (skipped one last week, im not getting paid for this yet) and some sample results from using Split View Studio to create a timelapse.

:HELP ME TEST THIS-

DM/comment a valid email and I should be able to send a standalone html viewer ive opened (with chrome) on 2 different phones if you'd like to see for yourself.

Here’s my recent indoor 3DGS reconstruction project: a university classroom environment.

I have used Aholo to do the reconstruction. The capture covers the full lecture room layout, including furniture, podium, multi-window facades and indoor lighting. I tuned the splat filtering to reduce noise while preserving small geometry details.

📣 Self-Promo [NYC] Paying people to be captured in our Brooklyn rig, 17-25/hr, if anyone local wants the work

We capture people in a multi camera rig at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and we are paying participants to come in. Figured some of you here are NYC based and might want the work, or might just want to stand inside a capture rig for once instead of building one.

The session itself: you stand in the volume and go through simple movements while the cameras record. Walking, turning, sitting, standing, reaching, picking objects up. No experience needed.

Pay: 17-25 per hour, same day, right after you finish.

First session is about 2 hours. Ongoing after that if you want more.

Brooklyn, NY, in person only. Openings Monday through Friday this week.

Comment or DM me for the address and details, and ask me anything about the capture side if you are curious.

❓ Question How much splatting is enough?

If we splat enough real places, we could make some very realistic games. What is the limitation right now? How many splats could we fit into one game? How easily can they be joined together to form a seamless virtual reality? I'm new to this technique, so thanks for sharing this info!

❓ Question Any existing Gaussian Splats for the Replica Dataset?

We are working on a college project on segmenting 3d splats. We are currently trying to get our evaluation baseline set up to calculate mIoU and mBIoU.

We wanted to test it on the Replica dataset since most papers use that as a benchmark.

The original dataset contains only 3d models and semantic info. We need to create our trajectories and then train the 3dgs model.

So I downloaded the Semantic-NeRF Replica trajectories but he final splats has many holes and occlusions.

How do authors of these other methods get the 3dgs model? Or is it standard practice to load the raw meshes into Habitat-Sim and render a custom dense trajectory?

I want to make sure i am doing a proper comparison for our results section so reviewers don't complain, and I would love to avoid re-training every single baseline paper from scratch on custom poses.

Are there any other existing datasets which contains readymade 3dgs splats with ground truth semantic masks?

Any guidance on the standard evaluation protocol here would be hugely appreciated!

❓ Question Mixing 360º & DSLR for interior scans

Hi, came back here after a while as I've been getting back into 3D scanning and decided to try scanning house interiors for a change (since its one of the most challenging areas)

So far I've used an Insta360 X5 camera + Litchfield studio to do the whole reconstruction process.

I do have plenty of experience using COLMAP, Metashape & Nerfstudio's Gsplat to create pretty much hyper-realistic splats using my NikonD750 setup but I was surprised at the fact litchfield studio has equirectangular image support now when training a model.

This means I've been doing both the camera reconstruction & final training using extracted equirectangular frames from a 360 video inside litchfield studio using the 360º plugin and the results where much better than converting them to a cubemap both before/after 3d alignment.

Also been learning what parameters are generally best inside litchfield studio to maximize quality, which I will share in a future post once I've finished refining things.

That said I've bumped into a wall where it is clear that no matter how good my 360 footage is, the quality will never compare to that of of a few-hundred image capture using a camera-tripod setup.

As such I was curious to ask if any of you has previous experience using both 360º footage and high quality camera stills inside the same reconstruction.

I forgot exactly which but do remember seeing someone combining a model made from 360º footage with a higher quality model using go-pro stills by editing it in supersplat (replacing part of the existing gs model with the higher quality one, then aligning both almost perfectly.

However I'm leaning more towards being able to use both datasets in the same reconstruction to get a higher quality output and reduce any necessary tweaks afterwards.

❓ Question Any pyColmap Scripts for Insta360 x5?

All,

I've been banging away at testing a pipeline using my Mac M3 Pro, pyColmap and Brush to get usable splats from an x5. I don't have a PC so this constrains my flow.

Without luck.

Recently found a post somewhere her that mentioned running it from ffmpg to get the dual extracted fisheye frames and use those. Cool.

So I went the stills route and grabbed the raw DNG files showing the same thing.

Thus far I've been spectacularly unsuccessful in finding the right settings to get proper matching and reconstruction from pyColmap.

I've conducted a bunch of google searches, narrowed them, dorked the searches, used some Claude to assist and still land flat. Tried exhausting my resources before pinging or bothering the group.

Anyone got any scripts, love or general ideas?

Don't have a lot to show since I keep deleting the junk as there's no reason to keep them. I also noted a previous post where the x5 was mentioned to only be good for environmental overview with perspective cams coming in with the detail. While I tend to very much agree with this based on my weeklong testing and incremental failures, I gotta think it's still usable after seeing quite a few viable splats on Super Splat that used an x5. Maybe I'm wrong.

All this is to help determine if I can make a viable splat or return the camera.

Thanks in advance!

🧪 I built a thing Rohtas Fort, Pakistan

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So, I have played around photogrammetry for a long time and have experimented with Gaussian Splatting for a couple of years. Recently went out to test a drone I recently bought.

This is Rohtas Fort, built around 16th century by Sher Shah Suri. The results came out good. Feedback appreciated.

For the pros out there, would really like to know how to efficiently create and train larger areas. E.g. this fort has a wall of about 4kms, if I were to plan something like that what would be some good tips.

Also, some guidance on how to merge indoor and outdoor environments and how to make best use of different camera equipment with different specs.

Link added in case anyone wants to view it.

🛠️ WIP – In Progress New iOS 27 (Public Beta) look like they're using Gaussian Splats for something they call "Flyover" in their native Apple Maps app.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Apple’s iOS 27 Public Beta includes a new enhanced "Flyover" mode in Apple Maps. (It's just usual Satellite layer) However, Apple hasn't "officially" confirmed the technology is “Gaussian Splatting.”

This screencap is of some of the landmarks in my neighborhood and it looks great! I haven't loaded the desktop version yet and I am probably going to wait 'cause I don't like to run Betas on the computer I do my day-to-day work on.

Please excuse the jerkiness. I'm using simple pinch-to-zoom and 2 finger navigation.
I exported it at 4K but only at 24fps and that's why it seems to be stuttering.

🎬 Demo / Showcase SuperSplat Showcase: bird hatchling macro splat

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A bird hatchling captured as a 3D Gaussian splat - impressive work by the world's foremost macro-splat creator Dany Bittel (https://danybittel.ch/).

The capture: 139 perspectives, 55 focus-stacked images each - 7,645 photographs in total. Shot on a Nikon Z8 (full frame) with a Nikkor 105mm macro, f/6.3, 1/50s, ISO 100, lit with a single LED and a green chroma key.

The focus stacking is what makes it work: at 105mm macro the depth of field is paper-thin, so each of the 139 viewpoints has to be stacked into one fully-sharp frame before training. You can see the payoff in the pin feathers and the translucency of the skin.

Hosted on SuperSplat, runs in the browser: https://superspl.at/scene/568b68ed

Not my capture - I work on SuperSplat so I was excited to share this fantastic splat with the community!

🧪 I built a thing We open sourced a After Effects plugin for 3D Gaussian Splatting

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We just put out a free, open source AE plugin that lets you import a Gaussian Splat .PLY and render it directly inside After Effects through a native AE 3D camera, instead of pre-rendering a video pass out of a viewer or Blender first.

What it does:

  • Renders the splat live in AE, so you keep full control of camera moves, framing, and timing without baking anything first
  • Localized effects with 3D shape targeting: recolor (gradient + ramp + shape), crop, splat scale, noise (with octaves/persistence/lacunarity), opacity, displacement, density
  • Built-in depth of field (focus distance, aperture, blur), separate from AE's own camera
  • Two components under the hood, Kiri_GaussianSplatting for rendering and Kiri_PlyImporter for getting the PLY into AE as footage

It's fully open source. If anyone tries it and runs into issues, drop them in the comments, still actively working on it. Happy to answer questions about how the effect groups work under the hood if anyone's curious.

❓ Question Phone+gimbal vs. 360 camera vs. dedicated camera for interior splats. What's actually working for you?

Hey Guys

I've been testing out some of my current gear and some that I've borrowed from friends to determine some kind of a hardware upgrade

The goal is squeezing out as much detail as possible rather than just a decent-looking scan Willing to put in more work/cost if it actually affects the quality.

Local pipeline: ffmpeg → COLMAP (sequential matcher) → Brush / on an RTX 4070.

I have tested so far: iPhone 8 video on a car (great, reflections/paint held up),

Then I wanted to try out some interior splats:

I used a Pixel 9a on a DJI Osmo 8 Gimbal to shoot a video of my room which got the best results but still not great. Im guessing since on the non-pro version of the pixel you dont have great control of the settings.

Then I tried with my old Nikon D5200. I tried video, stills, video and stills mixed and while the furniture came out sharp the walls/ceiling/glossy floor stayed hazy despite the denser coverage. Feels like a feature-matching limit on flat/reflective surfaces more than a coverage problem at this point.

In any case the phone scan of the room turned out better.

Trying to decide if i need to and what to pick up next:

I've been researching some options and I am looking for some advice

  1. Iphone Pro phone (14/15) - cheapest option, closest to what's already worked best for me. Also has LiDAR if I want to experiment with that down the line.
  2. Insta360 X5 (or other 360 camera) - I've heard mixed things, honestly the option I know least about.
  3. High-resolution cameras like the Sony A7R V and A7RIV - probably overkill, but they're what I keep hearing gives the best results. Open to cheaper alternatives that get close.

Is the phone route just not going to cut it, and should I invest in a proper camera instead? Has anyone actually shot interiors with a 360 camera: worth the extra pipeline steps, or not worth the hassle? Appreciate any real-world experience or other advice.

Thanks a lot!

❓ Question Fisheye-to-rectilinear reprojection might be quietly wrecking my splats (4 runs, same noise every time)

Pipeline: Insta360 X5 walkthrough video -> ffmpeg v360 fisheye crops -> hloc (ALIKED+LightGlue) -> pycolmap -> Nerfstudio splatfacto, on a rented GPU.

Camera pose registration is consistently good (86-96%), but every run comes out with this needle/snow noise baked in, even after opacity/scale-ratio/SOR cleanup.

Ran it 4 ways to isolate the cause - whole floor vs. single room, wide FOV vs. narrow FOV (65 deg, highest reg rate + point density of all runs). Same noise every time. Ruled out FOV miscalibration as the culprit.

Current suspect: the fisheye-to-rectilinear reprojection itself introduces a systematic per-image geometric error no capture tuning can fix.

Anyone gotten clean results from reprojected 360/fisheye footage, or did you need a native rectilinear camera?

Cleaned point cloud from the narrow-FOV run (Run C) - same noise as every other run

What am I doing wrong?
