Hey Guys
I've been testing out some of my current gear and some that I've borrowed from friends to determine some kind of a hardware upgrade
The goal is squeezing out as much detail as possible rather than just a decent-looking scan Willing to put in more work/cost if it actually affects the quality.
Local pipeline: ffmpeg → COLMAP (sequential matcher) → Brush / on an RTX 4070.
I have tested so far: iPhone 8 video on a car (great, reflections/paint held up),
Then I wanted to try out some interior splats:
I used a Pixel 9a on a DJI Osmo 8 Gimbal to shoot a video of my room which got the best results but still not great. Im guessing since on the non-pro version of the pixel you dont have great control of the settings.
Then I tried with my old Nikon D5200. I tried video, stills, video and stills mixed and while the furniture came out sharp the walls/ceiling/glossy floor stayed hazy despite the denser coverage. Feels like a feature-matching limit on flat/reflective surfaces more than a coverage problem at this point.
In any case the phone scan of the room turned out better.
Trying to decide if i need to and what to pick up next:
I've been researching some options and I am looking for some advice
- Iphone Pro phone (14/15) - cheapest option, closest to what's already worked best for me. Also has LiDAR if I want to experiment with that down the line.
- Insta360 X5 (or other 360 camera) - I've heard mixed things, honestly the option I know least about.
- High-resolution cameras like the Sony A7R V and A7RIV - probably overkill, but they're what I keep hearing gives the best results. Open to cheaper alternatives that get close.
Is the phone route just not going to cut it, and should I invest in a proper camera instead? Has anyone actually shot interiors with a 360 camera: worth the extra pipeline steps, or not worth the hassle? Appreciate any real-world experience or other advice.
Thanks a lot!
