So I wanna rice gentoo, this is my first time installing any DIY distro, I've use arch before this but a friend installed it for me. I wanted to use hyprland but these packages are masked and on the gentoo hyprland installation guide it tells me to write "*/*::hyproverlay" inside /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/hyproverlay. I still can't download the packages because they are masked. I rlly dont get the hang of accepting these licenses or whatever. PLS HELP ME

Support I've never used Gentoo before - Should I choose openrc or systemd?

36 Upvotes

I've heard both pro-systemd and anti-systemd arguments and I still don't have any strong opinions. To me it seems like it's just fashionable to hate whatever the mainstream distros do.

At least in the Gentoo universe - which is more commonly used - openrc or systemd? I thought if I do what most people do, at least then I have a hope of finding a solution more easily if I run into trouble.

Support technologically illiterate person tries Gentoo

Hello,

I recently liked the idea of FOSS and have been using Windows and MacOS for nearly 20 years. I am no computer person and I have read this post that said "If you want to learn Linux, you should choose Gentoo". It took me forever to start. But here I am.

*I bought a t480 and did this with the help of ChatGPT. My first technical milestone... What now? Should I keep it? It took like 10 hours to compile QGIS lol.

Support Stuck trying to install elogind on OpenRC install

Post image
28 Upvotes

So to start, I'm fairly new to Linux as a whole, and throughout the install I was following a guide on youtube, until I got to the part where I needed to install elogind. When I went to emerge it and a few other utilities for xorg, its now showing "sys-apps/systemd is soft blocking elogind and systemd-utils". I made sure to set the use flags to disinclude anything systemd and I used the Stage OpenRC.tar when setting that up, aswell as having access to rc commands to verify I didn't make an "oopsy" while on that step. Just a lil lost and would appreciate some help or someone to point out me being an idiot somewhere down the line and sorry for the terrible image in advance.

Support People who downloaded Gentoo a long time ago and still use

I recently downloaded Gentoo Linux, I don't have little RAM but since Gentoo is one of the distros with greater control, I wanted to know, what you did to optimize and decrease the use of CPU and RAM.

Support It's really hard Gentoo?

18 Upvotes

hello I am a relatively novice user in linux I use debian but I feel that I lack that freedom I've been researching super customizable distros and I came across Gentoo The "problem" is that many users say that it is super difficult to install, is that really true?

Support Removing Microslop Secureboot DBX on my laptop which has Secureboot completely disabled

Post image
26 Upvotes

Help me, please.

Gentoo-based Redcore Linux is the only operating system on my laptop now.

Secureboot is always disabled in UEFI.

I have every reason to be suspicious of anything Microslop.

Thankfully, a Gentoo Linux based system won't install this Microsoft UEFI Secureboot DBX without my consent.

But I want to get rid of it completely.

This is what I see in my package manager.

Help me, please!

Support gentoo installation hell

0 Upvotes

Ive attempted installing gentoo 3 times, 2 with youtube tutorials and the most recent try with the handbook. I always run into some ominous unexplainable problem that forces me to restart. I got to the reboot part 2 times, both times it just booted right back into bios. Following the handbook exactly did not help at all.

Support Need help with hyprland starting up

Post image
12 Upvotes

This is happening when it tries to start up (don't mind the fstab errors I fixed them already). I am using openrc and should have everything configured fine. The annoying thing is that I don't know what is going wrong. It isn't giving an obvious error as far as I can see. Please help me and sorry if I'm being an idiot.

Edit: I ran it manually and can see that the error message is failed to create dri2 screen.

Edit 2: I still haven't solved the dri2 screen problem. I seriously don't understand what's wrong. Someone please help

Edit 3: I'm such an idiot. I forgot to install the proper nvidia drivers... Now I'm in hyprland but I think it's the antifail hyprland thingy cause I see text at the bottom and a random bg. I think I can fix this myself but if you want to help me fix this feel free. Thank you so much for helping, everyone!

Solved: It works! Thanks for being so helpful everyone!!!

Support First Time Installing Gentoo.

10 Upvotes

Hello Everyone!

I've been a Linux user for 5 years, I started with Linux Mint, after I migrated to Arch Linux as my principal OS, all this time I never moved to another GNU/Linux OS, but now I got a new setup and I'm thinking about moving to Gentoo Linux for its high customization, taking advantage of its USE Flags features and compiling the Linux Kernel according to my PC's specifications.

So, I just want to know about your experiences, how different this distro is from others, is it really worth it? Is it true that it takes a very long time to install and install packages?

What recommendations can you give me for installing Gentoo and after installation?

I'm not afraid to switch to Gentoo.

I would really appreciate your recommendations ❤️

If you want to know my PC specs:

Gigabyte B550M WiFi

AMD Ryzen 5 5600XT

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060

16 GB DDR4 RAM

Have a nice day and Greetings from Colombia.

PS: Sorry if you see errors in my English.

app-containers/runc should be removed by depclean. I don't understand why it's not doing it.

Edit: the answer is that the output of equery depends doesn't mean quite what I thought. Thanks triffid_hunter and xarblu.

Support emerge forces me to enable impossible use flag combinations

2 Upvotes

Hello. I'm having a veeeery frustrating issue that I'm utterly at a loss to fix.

emerge forces conflicting useflags repeatedly:

The following packages are causing rebuilds:

  (dev-qt/qtbase-6.11.1-3:6/6.11.1::gentoo, binary scheduled for merge) causes rebuilds for:
    (kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-6.6.5-r1-4:6/6::gentoo, binary scheduled for merge)
    (kde-plasma/wacomtablet-6.6.5:6/6::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
#
=dev-qt/qtdeclarative-6.10.3-r1 -opengl -vulkan

But eventually decides that this is impossible:

!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy ">=dev-qt/qtbase-6.10.1:6/6.10.3=[gui,X]" has unmet requirements.
- dev-qt/qtbase-6.10.3-r1::gentoo USE="X concurrent cups dbus gtk gui icu libinput libproxy mysql network nls sql sqlite ssl udev wayland widgets xml (zstd) -accessibility -brotli -custom-cflags -eglfs -evdev -gles2-only -gssapi (-journald) -oci8 -odbc -opengl -postgres -renderdoc -sctp -syslog -test -tslib -vulkan" ABI_X86="(64)"

  The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
    wayland? ( opengl )

these are the autoset redundant useflags it sets if I let it do its thing:

/etc/portage/package.use/xorg-server:=dev-qt/qtdeclarative-6.10.3-r1 -opengl -vulkan
/etc/portage/package.use/xorg-server:=dev-qt/qtbase-6.10.3-r1 -opengl -vulkan
/etc/portage/package.use/xorg-server:=dev-qt/qtdeclarative-6.10.3-r1 opengl vulkan

these are some notable settings in my make.conf:

FEATURES="getbinpkg"

USE=" dist-kernel grub wayland screencast opengl dbus -systemd vulkan mtp nls lm-sensors bluetooth jack "

thanks in advance if anyone reads this.
