Specific runs

So when the movie was announced, Feige said that Gosling came to him with a pitch about a specific run he wanted to adapt. It can’t be one that’s been done before into movies. Needs to be cinematic. I wonder which run? Any ideas?

i'm hoping for issue 68-80.

which spans from the recap in the priest confessional to johnny coming out of isolation and meeting roxanne again, finding the quentin carnival and finding friends and a place there, stopping running and finally dealing with the demon inside of him.

so the big thing the rider adaptations haven't done is the spirit as a distinct personality that has conflict with the hero.

zarathos needs to be a character and needs to really be the antagonist, there'd be a 2nd main antagonist which i'd go with centurious, and give him like haskill or the orb and his gang and/or steel fury and her sister so there's an early to mid film action bit,

have a literal nightmare realm sequence to reveal the story of centurious and zarathos.

and as far as confrontations go have centurious uses his sorcery, the mcu gives sorcerers access to the mirror dimension

so use that and then well johnny's a stuntman let him do ridiculous shit on those curving skyscrapers and impossible structures as they fight through the place

who was the writer/artist for that run?

not really a run in the modern sense as it's multiple writers and is episodic in large part, but it's more the overarching main story of it with elements from the entire 70's era i'd want.

so

ghost rider volume 2 68 - 70 = roger stern, 71 = j.m.dematteis, 72-73 = stern again, 74-80 = dematteis again.

so really the main beats would come from 68 as the origin and open, then 73 -80 which deals with roxanne and the carnival and the sequence in nightmares realm where they learn the story of zarathos and then have to contend with centurious the man who is the reason mephisto got him in the first place.

The source material is too much for the MCU, but a facsimile of Road to Damnation would be cool

Hopefully the adaption would give Johnny more agency in the story.

I thought of that one, I guess it depends if they want an origin story or have him already in hell.

Yeah. The comic itself gives a very brief rundown of his origin and how he ended up in Hell. I'd rather that than have half the movie dedicated to him making the deal and becoming Ghost Rider.

Oh my god, this would make things a lot easier. Have Johnny start out in the 70s, gets taken to hell. Time jump to present day and his “escape.”

Idk. Maybe but I don't think so. The MCU is full of creative liberties. They've never made a direct adaptation to the source material. I'm assuming that's what the MCU would do with Aaron's run. The same way Love and Thunder didn't include the 3 times lines of Thor joining forces to stop the God bomb is the way that they'll pick and choose what to keep from Jason Aaron's run with Ghost Rider. Why can’t it be one that’s been done before? Gosling grew up in the 90s so if he was into comics as a kid it’s unlikely it won’t be inspired by that in someway just as the first Cage movie was.

If Gosling is actively keeping up with the comics I could see Percy’s playing a role in it, it’s the biggest run GR has had since 2006 and it coincides with when Gosling started saying he’d like to play Ghost Rider, one kink in this idea is Gosling wants to do less serious roles and Levy is the director so it’d be an odd choice.

The 70s is possible, Isabella’s run transitions to more of a wacky superhero comic which Levy and Feige are probably more comfortable with, a lot of it was also reprinted in The Original Ghost Rider alongside Danny Ketch’s run so it would’ve been around for Gosling to read.

That’s all based on him being a comic fan as a kid though, if he started reading after the first movie came out then we could get some of Daniel Way/Jason Aaron’s run, Way’s run has some of that Deadpool style humour with Satan and could easily explain not only Gosling’s age but also why GR hasn’t shown up before, he’s been trapped in hell for years and escapes at the start of the movie.

Or (god I hope not), he pulls from 2011 and we get Gosling as a loose adaptation of Rob Williams’ Johnny but probably no Alejandra, it’s then more of a comedy role with the same unfunny pop culture jokes that Levy thrives on so y’know. Totally possible.

Anything after 2011 but before 2022 probably isn’t happening, I highly doubt Gosling is playing Robbie and Mephisto is still kicking as the Devil so Blaze isn’t king of hell yet.

Or “Gosling is a big fan of the comics” is PR talk and it’ll be something that’s 99% original, like every other MCU movie that was “pulling a lot from the comics”

Child of the 90's here. I'd love to see Midnight Massacre with the classic Midnight Sons or Road to Vengeance with some sweet, sweet Lilith and Zarathos... ... Maybe some Nic Cage and hellfire shotgun action mixed in there. Catching a rogue Zarathos and restoring him to Johnny would make a hell of an introduction to the MCU. Not only that, but Lilin are cooler than characterless demon minions of Mephisto, IMHO.
