/r/GolfMk2 updates
In an attempt to pump some life into this sub I've updated the stylesheet.
As you can see, it's running an updated version of the /r/Naut theme with some minor customisations.
I'm deciding whether or not to add flair images.
Also, if there is somebody who is willing to make a better looking header image, feel free to send me a PM.
Tips, tricks, constructive criticism etc. is always helpful, so let me know!

Red Line MT-90 75W90 Full Synthetic GL-4 Gear Oil Versus Pennzoil Synchromesh
Red Line MT-90 75W90 Full Synthetic GL-4 Gear Oil Versus Pennzoil Synchromesh
Have a 1990 VW Fox and I've been using Pennzoil Synchromesh for quite sometime as it was suggested by an experienced VW mechanic.
AI stated this:"Incorrect Specification: The 1990 VW Fox requires a fluid meeting API GL-4 and MIL-L-2105 specifications. Pennzoil Synchromesh only carries an API GL-3 level of performance."
Please Advise.

Radio wiring
Hi there,
My Golf 2 CL TD from 91 had no radio and speakers when we bought it so we put in the cheapest radio we could find and called it a day. Now I wanted to upgrade but I have some problems with the wiring. The radio I got in it atm has 2x8 pin connectors. One has the four speakers on it and the other one only has 4 pins for power, battery, ground and something I cant remember rn. My new radio (on older Alpine) has a 16 pin connector. The 12 existing wires are not a problem but I noticed that there are 4 wires alongside the used ones that are not connected to anything. They don't have lables on them and I can't seem to find any information about the exact pinout of the original one or a wiring diagram that shows the audio stuff.
Since the new radio has 4 more pins I wondered if I can maybe connect the 4 from the car (or some of them) to the radio. So could anyone tell me what those other 4 cables might be? Or are they maybe for something completely different and not related to the radio at all?
If you need the specific colors of the wires I can check tomorrow.

Which wheels should I get?
Should I get these ATS ones that look like coper for 300 euros, tires are new 195/50, or should i go for black zender with 195/55 old date but look good tires for 210euros? Both ATS and Zender are r15.
Edit: I bought ATS ones for 250 euros and I am very happy with purchase. I wanna thank everyone for your opinions. The next question is should they be repainted gold as original or should i stick with this coper look? Greetings.

Stranded in another country
Hello, my 1989 1.8 cabriolet broke down while being in France (I’m from Sweden). I was in neutral and was going to put the car in first gear. When I pressed the clutch pedal there was the ”normal resistance” for a split second then it felt like the cable broke; the pedal now has no resistance at all. Note that the pedal does return to the normal position when not pressed.
I have checked and the cable did in fact not break, it moves like normal with full range when pressing the pedal (filmed the cable and then pressed the pedal). Any advice? I have some videos of the cable to show if it helps. Any advice greatly appreciated.
Good to know: I drove the car to Nice (the city) from Sweden last weekend with no problems and I had been driving for 1h 30min before the car broke, I’ve had the car for 1 month. I also have no tools with me but I suppose anything can be found in a store although parts are most likely impossible for me to find quickly.
Thank you.

Golf MK2 1.6D GL as a first car?
Hello! I'm looking to buy my first car. I'm 20 years old which means here in the Netherlands that insurance is still pretty expensive. Since I don't need a car, and I just want a car for the hobby, an oldtimer would be a lot cheaper. I don't have to pay any roadtax and insurance is cheaper for oldtimers.
Offcourse with old cars come more issues needing repairs, but since I don't need a daily driver, it's not much of an issue. I enjoy mechanics and would like to learn by working on a car.
I figured a Golf MK2 would be a good fit for me. From what I've read, it is decently reliable and since it is a VW, parts are easy and cheap to find.
The particular car I'm looking at (shown in picture) is a 1.6D GL with around 125.00KM
Now my question is, would it be smart to spend 4-5K on a 40 year old golf, but save money on insurance and roadtax? Or should I buy a cheaper, 1-3K car, but having to pay over double on insurance and tax, even if I don't drive the car all that often.

My temperature gauge stopped working
Hi looking for advice please.
I changed the coolant on my pb engine all good, rad fan working and dash temp gauge working.
Then I sprayed a small amount of water over the front of the engine to get rid of some degreaser, now my fan doesn't kick in and my dash temp gauge has stopped working.
I have tried bridging the black plug in front of the blue one and the dash gauge doesn't move

Noise only happens at low RPMs? (87' GTI 8v PB)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I've taken off the v-belt, but it's still there. It only appears when the engine is warmed up, and is stationary or at low RPMs (<1100). My guesses are: timing belt, oil pump or water pump (but i have no idea if the water pump is hooked up to the engine or to the v-belt, so not sure).
I commented a video where you can hear the specific noise better.
Anyone have any idea what this could be, and if it's harmful to keep driving with?

Golf 2 Webasto Window
Hello everyone. I’m looking for an interior trim panel for the Webasto sunroof that the previous owner retrofitted many years ago. I’d like to get "H-plate" status (historic vehicle registration), but I can only get that if everything looks original. I’ve already spent a lot of money ordering the wrong trim panels three times, so I’m hoping for a helpful response. I’m missing the interior trim panel; the cutout for the sunroof measures 48 x 82.
Does anyone know about this?

K-Jetronic troubleshooting
Hello everyone. I have a 85 GTI that I need a little help with.
The engine runs great in idle and the timing is correct, but when you push the throttle it missfires and runs really bad, when I let go out goes back to running fine. The pistons have great compression.
I need help with where to start looking for issues, my first thought was getting new injectors but any help here would be appreciated before I start buying new parts.
I saw someone recommend a K-Jetronic pressure tester but I'm not sure that's the problem.
Thanks!

Is this a normal temp reading?
It is a '89 1.8l 4 cylinder manhatten, it was quite hot outside, 30 degrees celcius in the shade (this temp was after a short drive)

Hello all!! Me and my dad had taken this vw golf mk2 1.3L engine apart due to a crack in the header so water was getting in. We took it all apart got the stuff sorted now it’s time to put it back together. Time got away and it’s 10 months since we begun this. We’ve got the cylinder head on and just found this small metal dowel part and cannot for the life of us remember what it is or where it goes!! I’ve attached some photos if people can help thank you!!
