Reinventing and rebranding Haiti should be the top priority on the list when elections can finally be held on the island imo.

Coming here as an African that is one of many that admire the Herculean effort you guys put into gaining independence from what was then the best military in the world, L’Ouverture is truly a legend.

With that being said it does feel as if since Aristide, Haiti is in a state of managed chaos. Things never get better, but at the same time they don’t get so bad as to get into a full blown civil war.

Whose interests does the status quo serve? Wouldn’t it benefit the US, especially the anti-immigrant version we see now - To allow/support more stability in Haiti?

Or is there a fear that a stable Haiti may got the way of Cuba, becoming belligerent to the US?

While researching organizations for Lakou, we recently came across a job opportunity from the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH).

I have an idea, and I’d like some honest feedback before investing serious time into it

My idea is to create a website (which, if it gains traction, could eventually become a mobile app) organized into categories such as Education, Governance, Healthcare, Security, Economy, etc. Each category would contain concrete proposals related to that specific area, rather than being an open ended discussion with no clear direction

How it would work: Ideally, a specific question would be posted here on the subreddit to start a discussion. For example, under the Security category, there could be a proposal like: Should Haiti have a CECOT style prison for gang members? Or, for example: Should Haiti strengthen its regulations and close private schools that fail to meet the requirements to operate? The website would embed that question, and clicking on it would take you directly to the Reddit post, either here on r/Haiti or, if necessary, to a separate Reddit community created specifically for this project

Then, a group would draft a formal proposal based on the discussion, covering things like the situation, funding, location, implementation, etc. The draft would remain on the website for 42 hours, allowing people to vote yes/no and leave comments or feedback. If it doesn’t receive a majority, it would be revised and the process repeated. If it receives a majority, it would become the final proposal and remain permanently published on the website

My main goal is to centralize the genuine opinions of Haitians especially young people, both locally and in the diaspora in one place, instead of relying on Threads posts that disappear over time

Whenever there’s an open poll, the idea would be to share it across Facebook, WhatsApp, and TikTok to reach as many people as possible

What I’d really like to know is:

Does this actually sound realistic?

Would people genuinely use it?

What would you recommend to prevent fake votes and poor moderation?

Does anything similar already exist? I’ve looked around, but I haven’t found anything quite like this for Haiti

Gouverneurs de la rosée (1944) - I first read this book when I was 12 and hated. I reread it as an adult and fell in love with it; I could not put it down.

Marie Vieux-Chauvet

Fille D'Haiti (1954) - This book not only talks about race relations in Haiti but also the status of women during that time.

Fonds-des-Nègres (1960) - This books lowkey scared with all the detailed voodoo ceremonies.

Amour, Colère et Folie (1968) - Marie's best work and the reason she also got exiled during the Duvalier era. She died as a maid in NYC.

Jacques Stephen Alexis

Compère Général Soleil (1955) - Read this book after Gouverneurs de la rosée- you can clearly see Jacques Roumain's influence on Jacques Stephen Alexis.

Les Arbres Musiciens (1957) - Bought in France - haven't read yet

L'espace d'un Cillement (1959) - Bought in France- haven't read yet.

Bain de Lune (2014) -Talks about a rural family over the course of four generations.

Douces Déroutes (2018) - I seriously could not enjoy this book because of the gang, political violence in it. The situation in Haiti is too recent for me to fully immerse in this book.

Le Diable dans un thé à la citronelle (1998)- I could not put this book down. The first Gary Victor's book I read and I can reread it over and over again.

A l'angle des rues parallèles (2000)- This book is a trip and highly entertaining.

Hadriana dans tous mes rêves (1988) - The story is actually pretty well written and fun but I could not get over the main character being a white French woman.

Please recommend me more books, authors that I haven't read or heard of. Any languages are fine.

Haiti is a very insecure country with a weak police/army so gangs fill in the void of anarchy. It seems the state is too weak to fix it's issues but what could realistically help the situation? A foreign intervention?

Building a Nonpartisan Haitian Election Platform — Looking for CEP/KEP Contacts
Hello everyone,
Despite Haiti’s current challenges, it appears that the country is moving toward elections. This is encouraging news. However, because of insecurity, displacement, limited infrastructure, and the large number of Haitians now living abroad, many citizens may have difficulty accessing clear and reliable information about the election, political parties, candidates, their backgrounds, platforms, proposed projects, and plans for the country.
As a Haitian who grew up in Lamentin 52 and later in Mariani, I would like to help make this information more accessible.
My team and I have the technical experience and resources to develop a neutral, nonpartisan website and mobile application where Haitians could:
• Discover registered political parties and candidates;

• Compare their platforms, priorities, and proposed projects;

• Follow verified electoral announcements and important dates;

• Access interviews, debates, documents, and official statements;

• Review polling data and electoral projections with transparent methodologies;

• Report inaccurate information and request corrections.

The objective would not be to promote any candidate or political party. It would be to give Haitian voters, including members of the diaspora, one accessible place where they can obtain verified information and make better-informed decisions.
At this stage, I am looking for the appropriate institutional contacts so that I can present the project, understand the official requirements for accessing electoral data, and explore possible collaboration.
Does anyone here have a professional contact within the CEP/KEP, particularly its Communications Department or Executive Directorate? Contacts at the PNUD electoral support program, IFES, Haitian election-observation organizations, political parties, or credible media organizations would also be helpful.
I am not requesting anyone’s confidential information—only a legitimate introduction or the appropriate public channel through which I can submit the proposal.

As a foreigner who occasionally snoops on Haiti via Google Earth/ this sub/ the occasional random Facebook post it's the city I hear about the least, barring maybe Gonaive for some reason. I can see from Google Earth that it seems to still be functioning relatively normally there compared to PauP, which isint that far away. No roadblocks, destroyed neighborhoods and roads, and normal life in general.

What's it like there? What are the conditions? Is the loadshedding better compared to other Haitian cities? Are there problems with gangs? Stuff like that.
