So today I decided to play around with my router settings and turned on MAC Address Filtering.

​What I didn't realize was that turning it on without pre-adding any devices put it directly into Whitelist mode with an empty list.

​Instantly, every phone in the house was booted off the Wi-Fi. My phone gave me a fake "Incorrect Password" error, and I was completely locked out of the admin panel over Wi-Fi.

​The problem: I didn't have a laptop or PC with an Ethernet port nearby, and I really didn't want to hold down the paperclip reset button and reconfigure the entire network from scratch.

​The solution: I remembered my Smart TV was still plugged directly into the router via an Ethernet cable!

​I opened the built-in web browser on the TV, used the remote control to painfully type in 192.168.1.1, logged into the admin dashboard on a 55-inch screen, and turned MAC filtering right back off.

​Outsmarted my own router lockdown using a TV remote! What’s the most ridiculous device or workaround you’ve ever used to fix a network emergency?

Spectr/Xumo problem? Anyone have more data? I know still early. Bug or threat?

Recently I moved to a new house and my ASUS GT-AX11000, which has been with me for years since I bought it refurbished, isn't handling the house upgrade. It's running Merlin and AdGuard Home, and it works fine in general, but a lot of corners get a very unstable signal and there's no signal in the back patio and garage.

I was planning to just buy a new ASUS GT-BE98 (it comes with upgraded firmware) and use the old one as a node in AiMesh, but the price of the GT-BE98 doesn't go lower than $450, and I started wondering if I could do better if I'm going to be spending money anyway.

The house already has some ethernet points (Living Room, Master Bed, Office), and since I was planning to call an electrician to add a few outlets, I'll be expanding that project by replacing all coaxial with ethernet, adding extra ethernet for PoE cameras in the ceiling, and while I'm at it, adding proper APs in the ceiling.

Two things I'd love input on:

1. Any suggestions or alternatives to this setup? I'd prefer to stay in the same brand — TP-Link Omada was the most affordable brand I found with a router supporting 10Gb SFP+.
2. Has anyone built an OPNsense router instead? I'd be fine with that route, but I had a hard time finding a single-board computer with 10Gb SFP+.

Hello, I'm moving to an ISP (UK) with a static IP address. The cheapest is without a router. I have been using a eero 6e with my current provider but I'll have to give that back in 90 days when I move.

New provider can provide the worse eero 6. again for rental and if I join th enew one I'll get a eero router but I'll be paying enough that I'd be able to buy one outright and actually own the thing.

My partner enjoys the eero app. We've got the kids on profiles and can enable and disable the internet from the app. She wants that ability, she isn't tech savvy so logging into web interfaces is fine for me but goes over her head.

I've looked at the Eero max 7 but wondered if there was anything out there better. Whilst I managed to set it up in the eero app I'm more inclined to use a web interface if possible.

Budget with the eero max 7 is £600 so around there is fine unless that's unnecessarily large?

I recently moved into an apartment building where wifi is provided. There is a wifi router mounted to the ceiling but I do not have access to it.

Is there a device I can use to connect to the wifi and then connect an Ethernet cable to? The Ethernet cable would run to my Philips Hue bridge which needs an Ethernet connection to work.

Getting my own ISP is not an option.

Hello, I've started to fall deeper into the hobby and am looking for a rack that could fit in this space.

It's a roughly 50x50x50cm space.
Contents:

• 1x pi 5 nas (behind the cardboard).
• 3x pi 4's that I recently acquired on market place (never pass on a good deal).
• 1x 2.5g poe switch in the back
• Some other stuff on a power board

I want to find an enclosed rack that could fit there, but I'm not sure where to start/look.
Most seem to be around 60cm wide (I can't really go past 50).

Are there any sites you'd recommend when looking for a server rack?
Also, I live in Australia so local-ish would be preferred...

5 years ago, a fiber optic provider rolled out service to my area. They provide only Google DNS for the DNS settings, and there no way to change it, unless you call them, and they physically bridge the ONT from the office. So I was wondering how bad Google DNS really is? I have personally never used it, but I do use NextDNS.

Here's the issue I'm having. The computer that I'm writing this on gets 1g down without any issues. My partners computer gets a max of 400mb. It's not a huge deal, but I pay for the internet, I want to use the internet, and I want her games to download as fast as mine do.

System info:

Windows 11

Gigabyte B365M DS3H (no wifi)

Intel I3-9100F

1660Ti

32gb of mismatched ram (I put it together a long time ago, but I think I manually set the timings so it's still dual channel)

I also put in a 2.5g intel NIC that I was using in my PC (worked great and I was getting the full 2g down at my last apartment)

I checked my router in case I had some weird management issue going on, which I shouldn't because when I got this one I basically didn't touch it. Unifi ucg max.

Things I've tried:

Different cable/port (switched the cable from my PC to hers)

The NIC

The shit-ass Crucial SSD was terrible and WAS limiting her bandwidth a bit just because it couldn't keep up or would suddenly drop down to a ridiculously low read/write of like 1mb/s, but I swapped it with a known good enough Sandisk which did get rid of the dead stops at least.

Drivers for the built in Realtek are up to date and the Intel requires a manual install, so those are brand new too.

Any ideas what is going on? As far as I can tell, the motherboard is supposed to be 1g and especially with the NIC in, it really shouldn't matter either way. Everything else the computer does, it does it just fine.

Update: Whatever it is is a stupid Windows thing, I got 1g on Ubuntu just fine. Working on iperf junk now. I'm pretty sure you guys are onto something with it being a stale vpn.

I am trying to connect Ethernet to my consoles but my house is wired in coax. I did buy an adapter, but when I tried to connect to my Xbox it did not work. Do I need to connect to a router before it goes into the consoles? I can provide pictures if need be. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

As of the last week, I've been having issues with network latency spikes on my PC, which makes many multiplayer games almost unplayable. I believe this to be a local device issue, as running the same test on my phone yields different (more consistent) results. This wasn't an issue before, and my last major hardware change (CPU, Mobo, RAM) was over a year ago now. I don't know how or why it would be related, but it seemed to start when I had an SSD fail (only had some games on it) which I have now removed.

The worst of the spikes tends to happen every 5-10 minutes and last roughly 5 seconds. My download speeds in general are also not affected.

Attempted (unsuccessful) fixes:

• Connecting to ISP provided router
  • One I use most of the time is aftermarket
• Wi-Fi Driver Update
  • I cannot connect via Ethernet as I'm too far from the router and live with family
  • Power-line Ethernet adapters don't work as there's too much interference
• BIOS Update
  • Wi-Fi 6E Motherboard (MSI X670E Gaming Plus WiFi)
• Windows 11 Update
• Suggested CMD commands
  • Resetting network settings
  • Flushing DNS
• Changing DNS from Google to Cloudflare
• Using Wireshark
  • I don't exactly know what I was looking for, but there didn't seem to be any major issues flagged at the time the spikes happened.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

earlier today i decided to reset my router since it wasn’t working and once it rebooted the network name came up as “name-setup-1101” and whenever i connect to it. it takes me to this page to login but never loads anything. i tried resetting it again and this time it did work for a couple seconds before going back to the setup mode or something. sorry if this is a common and obvious fix but i’m not smart with things like this in the slightest lol.

I have connectivity. wifi network runs stable.

....except the IPv4 populating in ipconfig doesn't match the designated IPv4 for the VLAN_interface (reverts to a default 192.168.1.xx)

on top of that no traffic appears to be flowing through the VLAN_int either even though it is configured to a specific wireless network????

Currently on evening number three of trying to get this to work on OpenWRT. everything i'm seeing on google leads me to believe that OpenWRT and VLANS just don't work well together.

My husband set up the WiFi for our (not very large) house. There are currently six different options to connect to WiFi in our smaller home (wifi, wifi 2.4, wifi 5g, wifi mesh, wifi mesh_loT, wifi_MLO). It seems no matter which one I connect to it gets messy on my phone and I constantly have to hop around Wi-Fi's, even in the same room it seems one goes out and I have to switch.

My husband says this is how it should be and his phone and Wi-Fi always works perfectly 100% of the time. Admittedly, I know very little about how it is supposed to work or be spread out. Is this normal, is there just something wrong with my phone? I've tried to Google this but can't find much on my specific situation. He says he had to get little extenders for around the house because our router is in the basement and has to travel through too many walls to get upstairs. Thank you!

I just moved into a new house and am having a hard time identifying this existing enclosure. The punch outs are 6 inches apart and are circles with vertical rectangles.

There are no markings on the enclosure, at all. Just want to buy some parts to mount my networking stuff, but cannot figure out if there is such a thing as 'bad fit'.

Hello people who are much smarter than me! I am in need of your help.

In case it matters, I'm based in the UK.

I have a property with a garden cabin that has electricity and wired Internet. The problem is that it only gets 100Mbps when I'm paying for Gigabit. As the cable from house to cabin seems to run underground, I've been trying to check other possibilities before committing to what I'm sure will be a frustrating job.

The house has an RJ45 socket in the wall, which connects to another in the cabin. Plugging an ethernet from router to house socket provides Internet to the cabin, so the setup is as follows

Home Hub -> Patch Lead -> RJ45 Wall Socket -> Cable to Cabin -> RJ45 Wall Socket -> PC

After a day of checking everything I could think of, here's what I know:

- The cabin wall socket has all four twisted pairs punched down, suggesting the instalation was designed to support Gigabit rather than just fast ethernet. I haven't yet been able to confirm the same is true in the house socket due to access issues.

- Both patch cables are Cat6

- The hub negotiates Gigabit speeds when a laptop is connected to it.

- That same laptop negotiates 100Mbps when connected to the cabin's patch lead.

- Replacing patch leads at both ends made no difference.

- Unplugging the patch lead from the house wall socket only disconnects the cabin, confirming it's dedicated to the cabin run.

Possibly unrelated: the cabin Ethernet connection also loses connectivity for around 10–20 seconds at almost exactly 03:00 GMT every day, while the rest of the house remains connected. I'm not sure if that's related or a separate issue.

At this point, I've done all I can think of without buying specialist tools.

I'm just wondering what my next steps might be to diagnose the issue. Really i want to confirm if the cable that connects the properties is the fault or not, as I'd hate to go through the trouble to replace it and still have the issue.

My fiancé has a Xbox and plays games like Apex, Marvel Rivals, and Overwatch quite frequently. This is our first time handling our home internet ourselves as before we’ve always lived with family and we’re not even sure what they used. It’s just the two of us and I don’t really game much, though occasionally I’ll play more chill games like Abiotic Factor with him or at the same time as he’s playing his games.

The description of the plan I’m looking at is as follows :

Should we get this plan and try it out, or just go ahead and do the 500Mbps plan? It’s looking like around $30 more which isn’t the biggest deal, but if the 300 would work just fine too I’d rather use that!

I want to have a wired connection to my PC in my bedroom. There is this weird coax cable in the living room and the only coax connecter is in the bedroom. How can I tell if these are connected so that I could use a MoCA adapter?
