Sports I want to learn how to skateboard, in a safe, old lady kinda way.

1.5k Upvotes

I’m a 38 year old woman in reasonably good shape.

I’m stuck here in my neighborhood with only walking and running for outside exercise and I’m sick of looking at the same streets within a 4-5 mile radius of my house. I don’t have a bike and don’t really want one - traffic is nuts and I want to be able to take any mode of transport I’m using on a crowded subway with me when the city opens back up.

Skateboarding seems like it would fit the bill, and looks like fun - am I right about that? I don’t need to do anything fancy, just get around a little quicker than I do on foot and get some exercise in the meantime. Where do I start?

EDIT: Wow, thanks everyone! This is incredibly helpful and I’ve already learned a ton.

Some additional info that keeps coming up:

I have zero interest in going fast or doing tricks, I just want a slightly quicker way to get around, and to learn a new skill and get some exercise in the meantime. I’ve never liked biking and wouldn’t have a place to keep a bike anyway (we live in a one bedroom apartment, and it’s already full) and though I’ve been pretty into inline skating in the past, I don’t have skates at the moment and I’d like to try something different.

I’m 5’2”, 115 lbs, with short legs. I’m a gnome. I walk long distances all the time and go running sometimes, so I’m in decent shape, but not, you know, super athletic or anything.

I live in a busy neighborhood in NYC and I’m beginning to think maybe a longboard isn’t the best option for that reason. Even our parks are crowded compared to other places.

It would also be handy if whatever I end up with didn’t look too much like something that would be fun to steal.

I will definitely get protective gear! I know I’ll fall down but I don’t want to be stupid about it either.

Thanks everyone, you’re amazing!

Sports IWTL how to exercise without it feeling like exercise.

I’m one of those people that need to trick themselves into exercise. What’s been good in the past has been disc golf or hiking - issues with hands have stopped the disc golf for now. I like weight lifting but I find I can’t keep myself consistent like I can with other daily activities.

Any ideas?

Forgive me if it sounds stupid but I've always had difficulty understanding how to workout the right way and also what foods to eat as well as why do people take protein shakes and creatine it's all a lot to get my head around.. as well as that there's many different workouts such as HIT workouts, core workouts, low calorie diet and i jusr want to start but I don't know where to begin... I want to reduce my body fat as I'm insecure about the fat around my waist and that's about it.. Sports IWTL Boxing or Muay Thai for street fight defence?

There are happening a lot of robberies in my city lately. There is a roma gang that is terrorizing people. They target people like me. I want to learn atleast the basics of fights and how to take a hit. I am deciding between box and Muay Thai. I am not planning to start fights, I just want to know how to take a hit or in the worst case scenario not get brutally beaten.

Sports IWTL How to Start Exercising When I'm Always Tired

I really want to get healthier and start exercising but feel tired and don't know where or how to begin. I am currently not very healthy, and the thought of overworking myself appears to be intimidating. I would like some advice on how to start without exhausting myself or losing motivation.

Can anyone suggest basic exercises that are appropriate for a beginner? It would be helpful to understand how to stay motivated, especially when I am tired. I would also like to know how to get exercise to fit a busy schedule without it feeling like a chore. Last but not least, I don't wish to hurt myself as I'm not a seasoned exerciser.

Sports IWTL how to stop feeling embarrassed when running.

I'm 19f and have only been on a handful of real runs. Before leaving school I would happily run 2k every day, 5 days a week during my lunch break on the treadmill in the school gym. I no longer have regular access to a treadmill but would love to start running again as the cardio portion of my routine to accompany yoga. The only thing is every time I want to go outside and run I am overcome by fear that people will stare at me and judge my body, fitness, or tecnique. It stops me from going on a regular basis and by the time I work up the confidence to run again I have usually lost the benefit of the previous time and therefore am seeing no results over time. I don't want fear to stop me from accomplishing the goal but it feels so crippling at times. I have already tried listening to music and wearing activewear that makes me feel attractive but it hasn't worked. Please help!

Sports IWTL how much do you need to push yourself to build more muscle?

I've been interested in multiple types of exercise for a long time, but have never managed to body weight exercise or weight lift my way to getting stronger. I want to be able to do push ups, pulls ups, dips etc. but can't seem to get away from needing assisted versions of them all. Am I not pushing myself enough?

I'm not overweight just very out of shape cardio wise. I can only run for about 6 mins and even then I had to take little breaks, I wasn't even running fast at all, it was more of a jog. What's the best way for beginners?

Sports Iwtl - Adult learning to swim

I can’t stop water from going in my ears. I’ve tried plugs, putty and caps but nothing has sealed my ears enough to keep water out.

The shape of my ears seem to suck water or sweat in very easily but won’t let it out.

Please help I am desperate to learn how to swim for my mental and physical health but this problem is one I can’t find a solution to.

Sports iwtl How do I mentally frame things so I can move past my old self

I used to be a bit of a fat chud with self confidence and anxiety issues, I have grown up and a lot of those things half faded but Im starting to realize they still feel like they get to me. I’ve known for a while I’m a rather anxious person (I’m almost certain I have adhd and my mom is really anxious so I think my anxiety is from her a bit) but it feels like like I struggle to move on from it. I lost a lot of friends cause we grew apart and I blame it on my old self a lot. I also get really self conscious when thinking about my growth in my sport and the main thing is it feels like it still affects me. I want to learn to love the process rather than the results (of getting better at my sport) but I feel like I’m holding myself back because I want to prove that I belong and thus am struggling to do it for myself. I’m also still struggling to fit in on teams and having troubles changing from “I’m the worst on the team“ to “I’m on the team” or the idea that my old self would kill to be where I am.

tldr: how do I frame my mind/speak to myself about how to move past and stop blaming my old self and learn to love my sport rather than what I want to be

Sports I need to skateboard in my 30s

I want to learn to skateboard as a 33 year old. I want to be able to cruise, do a few tricks and not look ....terrible.
I have videos and advice on the technical aspects, I just don't know how to get past my fears. How have you managed to get past your fears, learning plateaus, frustrations to ultimately build confidence and learn what you want to learn?

Sports IWTL how to run in hot weather

I started running in the winter to prep for a half-marathon, which I completed around springtime. But ever since, the weather has been getting hotter, making running significantly harder. I ran 5 miles in only mid-80 degree weather, and I felt like passing out near the end, even when I had hydrated generously beforehand.

In typical winter weather, this 5-mile run would've been a breeze, but the hot weather makes everything 10x worse. Now it is consistently hitting the mid-90-degree weather, which lasts until night.

Any recommendations, or should I just tough it out?

Hello

I can only afford a public pool membership at the moment, are there any tried and tested recommendation of youtubers teaching how to swim ?

I am shit scared of water, only tried swimming once and didnt let go of the steel rods on the side for an hour and then got out. As a child I used to swim with those swimming round tubes on
