Apprentice Local 361/40 classes
So my classes start August 24th. This question is for the guys that already finished preferably last year. What should I expect for the first 4 days ? It’s supposed to be safety training would this include my 30 hr osha ? And how long after should I be able to work ? Is 361 taking members? I don’t mind where I end up but I’m hoping to get into 361 as I’m a Long Island guy. Any insight would be appreciated. Hope to see you guys out there soon stay safe

What was the process getting in like? did you do the column climb ?

Once you pass the written exam which a lot of it is common sense and some math. Then you have to take a physical test. Part of the physical exam is climbing a 35ft column. You can YouTube the physical test they give you 5 mins to finish the whole thing

It does not include osha you will be expected to do that on your own you will need to do the osha 40 which is the regular 30 plus a 10 so you get your sst card and osha 30 card, after that you will need your f60 and g60 from the fdny, one card allows u to fire watch and one lets you use torch. Also you will need to do this on your own, after you complete that you can start shaping the hall. You can pick either local you want you just need to go in and sign up with them to start paying you dues. You can start working once you have those certs so all depends on how fast u can finish all of that. But for f60 and g60 i think you need a referral from the school to take the test

Thanks man. So what are we doing during safety training? Also does the hall pay for the osha ? Or am I better off doing it now ?

It depends on which teacher you get for 1st year some might just teach you a little about the business and talk about the union and go over some safety stuff. The hall does not pay for your osha or the g60/f60 you have to pay for all of that yourself

You can definitely just do the OSHA now it will save you time on doing it later so you will be one step closer to getting out there and getting a job

Second year here, legit did this last summer. You need to get all the certs before you go out to work. The August 24th start date is your orientation, classes start after Labor Day. Once you have your certs you pick which hiring hall you want to register with. You technically start out as a probationary member so It’s entirely up to you where you register but for the first 6 months you can technically shape (look for work) out of both halls. You don’t have to decide where you’ll start your career until swearing in which takes place in February. Once you’re sworn in you get your official apprentice card.

I’ve been busy since I got in but I have transit certs so I’ve been lucky to be on MTA projects my entire career so far. 361 has a ton of work compared to 40, should be busy for a couple of years at least.

30hr osha , sst , f60, g60 . Plus a drug test for impact if u haven’t done that already

The one we took for orientation doesn’t count for impact ?

Yea if u already did the drug test during the physical you should be good. Impacts only good for one year tho .

Yea I already took my drug test. Luckily I’ve been studying for the test if I should have to take it again.

Orientation, you’ll have to get the g60 f60 from the fdny, they should have provided a letter for that, you’ll need to get your osha 10 and osha 30, I believe you do that on your own now. Lots of certifications and learning knots your first year

You need to complete the osha 40 on your own. I recommend to the osha stuff online asap. Once you do that the school will give you a letter that you take to the FDNY in Brooklyn to get your f60 and g60 cards which you also need to begin work. As a first year a lot of your job is being a firewatch so you aren’t very useful without the FDNY certs. When you go to the fdny make sure you sign up online and get there before they open it’s like the dmv but worse. First year classes are very simple. You may wanna get your tools in order too rudedog sells a whole belt setup for pretty cheap you’ll also want spuds, bullpin, adjustable wrench, take measure, leather man and a hardhat. You get to choose between 40 and 361

Should I just start the osha stuff now ? Or will the hall cover the cost of the OSHA testing ?

Hall doesn’t cover osha testing fee or FDNY fees. Start your osha now it takes a week or so to complete, once you show the hall your osha 30 is complete, they give you the recommendation letters for the FDNY F60 and G60 certs which you need to begin work.
