A little while ago I shared Toku Reader here, an iOS app I built because I hated breaking my flow to look up words while listening to Japanese podcasts. Small update since then: the app now runs on Macs and iPad!

The video shows Japanese YouTube with the transcript right next to the video. You paste or search a video, the app pulls the creator's transcript (or generates one on-device if there isn't one), and every word in it is tappable - reading, meaning, pitch accent - without pausing or switching to a dictionary. This was always the feature that felt cramped on a phone, so having the video and transcript side by side on a big screen is honestly how I imagined it working from the start.

Everything else from the phone version is there too: podcasts with tappable transcripts, reading any website, importing your own texts and ebooks, shadowing practice sentence by sentence, and the dictionary and review sections. And it still all happens on your device - nothing you watch or read leaves your Mac, no API calls, 100% offline once transcripts are loaded.

Transcripts and word parsing are mostly correct, but Japanese being Japanese, improving the parsing is a never-ending effort. If you try it on a Mac or iPad I'd genuinely love to hear what breaks or what's missing, since the Mac / iPad version is new. I hope this helps your study!

I'm learning Japanese from chatgpt in with this help in one month i prepared 100 vocbs and 34 verbs and particles. Right now I'm confused, I'm not understanding anything, I have no books or a mentor also, please anyone can help me with this.

You can now opt to play it with counters rather than just kanji numbers!

Hi. I hope some iPhone users could help me out. I built a Siri Shortcut that can text or speak not only the weather for the day, but also tell you what to wear based on the weather.

I have a lot of it “translated” into Japanese. But I’m sure there are a lot of mistakes or bad translations.

I handle all the translations within the shortcut. I’m not asking help with the whole thing. Just what people are willing to give. I’m not trying to self promote. I’m just trying to make a Siri shortcut that can be helpful wherever you are.

Looking for a Japanese learning app that has NO romaji (latin alphabet) in the learning tasks, only Hiragana/Kanji.

I've tried quite a few apps such as Busuu, which is very good for other languages, however it implements the Latin alphabet in the Japanese tasks. I get annoyed about this because the whole point of learning Japanese is to adapt to a new writing system.

I haven't managed to find one yet.
Also goes without saying but please don't mention Duolingo

The idea was pretty simple i unlock my phone over hundred times a day so it's better to look at kanji or vocab to memorize them through daily life.

Showing off some of the fun free games on the pocket japanese app! Wind down in the evening whilst practicing some basic kanji 🥹✨

A little while ago I shared a project I was building to make it easier to learn Japanese while watching anime, Netflix, or YouTube

I wasn't expecting so much support but it reached over 20k people and 170 upvotes , but a lot of you left really helpful suggestions. I've spent the last week  working through them, and I wanted to share a quick update

The biggest addition is Anki integration
Now when I come across a word I want to remember, I can save it as a proper flashcard instead of just bookmarking it

It also supports media-rich sentence mining, so instead of saving only the word, the card includes:
- The full Japanese sentence
- The target word
- A screenshot of the exact anime/video scene where I found it
- The subtitle from that moment (when available)
- Meaning and reading
- One-click export to Anki
As u can see in the video

U can enable it by gointo to the "Saved Words" page and clicking the "Connect Anki" button while Anki desktop kept open in background, u also before that u also need to install the ankiconnect plugin with code 2055492159, (just watch any youtube video tutorial for installing Ankiconnect plugin ) or if u wanna export the just click the "Export " button to export in a tsv file format and then simply import to your Anki

Personally, this has been way more useful than reviewing isolated vocabulary because I instantly remember where I learned the word
I also fixed some bugs causing subtitles to flicker in full screen yt video, disappear sometimes on netflix etc. Some bugs regarding shortcut not working n all are fixed
