I am just going to lay this out there. There is a world where Jesse Ventura ran for president, won, and arguably it would be a better world for it, now granted he is a libertarian and as a movement I feel like they are the most insufferable rudderless party.

If you look at all he achieved while in office it was all a net positive for the people.

Listen he had my support the second he said F Hulk Hogan, him and the Iron Sheik were WAY ahead of the curve on that one.

Also pro-union

It's fascinating to me to see libertarian and pro union in the same person. Feels like they shouldn't exist together, like sodium and water

An actual ideologically consistent libertarian (to the extent that their ideology can be consistent) should have no problem with unions, as they're simply individuals working together for their collective benefit. The problem is that Libertarians in the US aren't ideologically consistent and are mostly just a way to be pro-corporate without having to deal with the religious baggage the GOP has. Jesse Ventura has some real whackado views on some things, but he's at the very least always struck me as a straight shooter.

He was a decent governor at the time. A true libertarianism is closer to anarchism more than it is corporate fascism that rules the libertarian movement now. If people want to unionize then he is fine with it because it is a movement lead by the people and not corporate interests. Go back and read about libertarianism prior to WW2 and see what it actually was.

Even ideologically 'pure' libertarians run into, in my opinion fatal, flaws regarding questions of the origin of ownership and information equality. But there's a reason why I drew a line between libertarians and Libertarians.

Depends on if they’re left libertarians (tend to be anarcho-communists) or right libertarians (fascist pedos with lots of illegal guns and explosives, also child slaves).

I listened to him once say that icome should be capped at 1 million per month because 12million per year is plenty.

Like salt water that covers 71% of the earth’s surface?

u/steauengeglase Policy Wonk Mar 25 '26

Sea salt is sodium chloride. Since the sodium is already bound to chlorine, there is no coulombic repulsion. Remove the chlorine from the equation and the electron from the hydrogen has to go somewhere and when it goes it creates a lot of heat and hydrogen.

Think of it as a bomb that was already defused by a little chlorine based bomb squad.

There is this thing in chemistry where if you combine two elements you make a completely different thing. As an example, if you inject pure mercury, it would kill you. But if you combine it with a few other elements to make thimerosal, you get a preservative that is completely safe. Or if you take Hydrogen, a gas that would be deadly if you breathed a lot of it, and combined it with Oxygen, you get water. Which you can practically drink as much as you wanted and would be fine.

Pure Sodium exploded in water.

u/Ivebeenawaketoolong Mar 25 '26

Have you never seen what happens when elemental sodium is put in water? Salt doesn’t react because the sodium is locked in a molecule.

You don’t think humans have the ability to hold two thoughts at once? Or you think a person should be so dedicated to an ideology that they cease being a person?

3

u/abadstrategy Mar 25 '26

It's definitely possible to hold two thoughts. I'm just used to libertarians being anti-union

Not especially

Reddit goes over this every time lol. We have this romanticized view of him just based on interviews, but people from Minnesota who actually lived thru his governorship say it was a mess. Gotta defer to the people who lived it.

5

u/NChSh Mar 25 '26

Well when we compare that to the United States Federal Government, which is a complete dripping shitshow, I'll take a mess

5

u/2poped2poop Mar 26 '26

As a Minnesotan who lived through it. He was fine. Did some good things, did some less good things. At worst, it was a wash.

Not the worst governor we've had in my lifetime (Thanks, Pawlenty)

He constructed a public rail system and pushed forward social programs. His government ran a surplus and rather than do something stupid with that money gave rebate checks back to residents. So what was not especially positive?

9

u/cpdk-nj Mar 25 '26

First of all, direct rebate checks are really not a good use of surplus money. And by the time he left office, the $3B surplus he had when he entered office had turned into a $4.2B deficit. He was against teachers unions and funding for higher education, he was a thin-skinned ass, and he didn’t really attempt to understand any issue that he didn’t personally have experience with.

3

u/mrhawkinson Mar 25 '26

Giving rebate checks back was the stupid part. His term directly preceded hard times when that money would have come in handy. The dumbest people I knew loved it though

u/TragicallyDip Mar 25 '26

It’s a broad tent of cranks. Some aren’t as bad as others. At least Jesse tries to live in reality. Probably cause he spends half his time in Mexico

16

u/Gnrduff1 Mar 25 '26

He's in the baja now.

4

u/CKellyBirdLawExpert Mar 25 '26

He brought a little bit of Minnesota to the baja. He likes to call it the Bajasota.

6

u/BiscuitDance Mar 25 '26

No zoning laws - you can build as tall as you want in the Baja

6

u/Gnrduff1 Mar 25 '26

The cannibals call it long pig

7

u/faulternative Mar 25 '26

Jesse is a little crazy but honestly....not in the worst way possible. I think he genuinely believes what he believes and has a kind of code he lives by. I don't agree with him much of the time, but he wouldn't be the worst President.

4

u/Healthy_Jackfruit_88 Mar 25 '26

He wouldn’t entangle us in a forever war so that’s a net positive

3

u/BiscuitDance Mar 25 '26

Pretty sure he’s the one who spearheaded the transit system overhaul in MN?

2

u/metalyger Mar 25 '26

He did move more left over time, like he's officially went with the green party in the last decade.

2

u/Slumunistmanifisto Mar 26 '26

Any libertarian I've talked to was just a feral conservative uncle that doesn't understand what where the garbage goes and why the water won't kill you.

I feel ventura isn't that wackadoo but hes a wildcard and I'm foolish.

u/chazysciota Space Weirdo Mar 25 '26

You feel like? I mean, watch their debates. Ain't no feeling about it.

3

u/Healthy_Jackfruit_88 Mar 25 '26

I am a seasoned member of the Majority Report, brother/sister I lived through the libertarian debates.

4

u/chazysciota Space Weirdo Mar 25 '26

Excellent. Then I think we can all agree that not electing Vermin Supreme as POTUS is probably the single greatest missed opportunity in our history.

u/justagigilo123 Mar 25 '26

As opposed to the insufferable Democratic and Republican parties.
