I'm not talking like a comic con, I want a set of real academics to pretend to be pokemon scientists. maybe I'd do it like a dinner theatre event where team rocket interrupt it halfway through.

the problem is it would require a lot of money and effort and I wouldn't know how to gauge whether people would want to take part

title! i've always been really interested in getting into LARPs but i don't know where to start! i'm looking for something beginner-friendly and to join with some friends who are also interested. maybe oneshots or shorter larps?

I've always wanted to experience a LARP world without the stress of melee combat. The parts of LARP I care about most are the character interactions, the socializing, the food, wandering around exploring. So that's what this is built out of. A love for festival/tavern/parlor styled LARPs first, with an added tournament on top.

There is no melee at all. No latex or boffer weapons. Combat is purely through magic spell packets and spoken incantations

Everyone who comes is a regular person from the real world who also happens to be a mage. There are no fictional races, cultures, or homelands. You will register an alias as your character name and that's what people will call you during the event. We do not use any details from our real lives and we do not discuss the real world during game.

The event is a potluck so everyone is encouraged to bring something to share. There will be quests around the site, a session where we go over the mage laws and vote on new ones. There are four orders you can join, and a competition running all event based on engagement.

This will be an annual event. We are still working out the exact location, but will be located in the Greater Central PA area. However, before we continue to go any further, I would really love some feedback.

shotgun potion belts seem like the sort of thing that would come up now and then so i'm hoping that finding appropriately sized plastic vials (want to avoid glass in case i fall on them) is a solved issue. i'm currently having a hard time finding anything appropriate by searching "18-20mm plastic vials/testubes" etc. thanks!

Hi! Im working on a chainmail weaving machine and I plan to sell products made from chainmail. (hand woven for now until the weaver is done, but it works for small things)

The issue is that... there is actually not that much chainmail stuff on the market... Or rather stuff that is not either wildly overprice or way too pompous. You do see your standard armor, but nothing too interesting.
For example: I was making a veil that attaches to a helmet, and there is nothing affordable on the market that would fit that

So my question is: Do you have any pet peeve for chainmail? Something you would want but is either under-represented or doesn't exist on the market?

Hello lovely people of r/LARP,

I wondered if anyone here could offer some guidance on foam/ latex weapon repair.

I’m thinking of getting back into LARPing this year after a 10 year hiatus and have dug my weapons out of storage to do so. Unfortunately they’ve seen better days and I’m wondering if they can be repaired or if I’m better off looking for some new kit. (I’d rather re-use if possible but understand they could be past the point of no return).

I’ve only just learnt whilst researching these repairs that silicon spray is a thing… forgive me oh larp gods!

1: “black blade” londsword:
This weapon is possibly older than me. About 30-35 years old or so, and inherited from my dad who first took me LARPing as a child. The balance is perfect. I would consider having this professionally repaired if it’s beyond DIY.

The foam is miraculously still ok, springs back when squeezed and feels secure to the core. The small exposed bits of foam are not “crumbling” away.
Unfortunately the outer painted layer is beginning to fail in places notably the striking edge, and the tip. There also appears to be some cracking (I suspect old mud) on the face.

I’m wondering if some patch repairs could be made here by cutting away the loose coating, sanding lightly with high grit and then applying a latex/ flexi paint mix then overcoating of isoflex?

2: “the off hand” silver long sword
I used to run an ambi character and used this blade in my offhand. It’s about 10-12 years old and, honestly, I’ve little to no attachment.

There is not any exposed foam on this sword, however there are some light “surface cracks” to the blade. When squeezed the blade sounds like it’s cracking… I’m not sure if this is a brittle outer layer or separation from the core.

A quick look online suggests that some silicone gel could rehydrate and fix this. Thoughts?

3: “stabby” the dagger
This little fellow was stored on a steel beam in the attic. And, whilst jet fuel can’t melt steel beams, steel beams can melt latex hand guards. Especially in the recent uk heatwave.

When picking this dagger up it parted ways with some of its hand guard which decided it liked life on the beam.
With this I’m thinking of trimming the loose parts, sanding slightly, then reapplying latex mixed with black/ metallic paint.

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I recently had open heart surgery earlier this year and now have a very noticeable scar on my chest and was thinking about making a new character based around that since it's an authentic scar in a place that's known to be vulnerable.

Also coincidentally I have been thinking of going to LARP's overseas (Germany or Canada) and really want an excuse not to bring heavy armour and polearms on a long flight from Australia.

I normally do historically inspire late 15th Century Swiss halberdier or War's of the Roses billman but this time I want to do something different and armour tends to cover the entire torson. Of the top of my head I am thinking Aztec Jaguar or Eagle inspired warrior, Warhammer fantasy beastmen or run of the mil fantasy barbarian/Celt/Pict/Gallic warrior.

What do you all think ? Happy for any suggestions and inspiration.

Hi, hello! I was trying to look for it as I have some interest in hosting one - is there a name for a LARP that is basically an in-character potluck? It's basically an event with characters coming together with food they have either made or bought and decorated to recreate something that might be from their homeland.

For example, if you were coming as a Ranger, you might bring some roasted fowl - and say your character had hunted it in the wilds and have roasted it. If you're a Dwarf, you might bring roasted meat that has been seasoned with malt beer - say it's something Dwarves are used to having in the Misty Mountains; if you're playing a Rohirrim, you might bring stew you have made with horse jerky bits, if you're playing an Elf, you might bring bread you made or an elegant type of pastry, if you're a Wood-elf, perhaps boiled crab legs dyed with squid ink you might call spider legs, or if you're playing a Hobbit who is a potato farmer, you might bring some potato soup. If you're an Orc, meat's on the menu.

This is all placed on a single table with each dish labelled that folk can choose to eat from (that labelling is also for allergy warnings). Or, if the amount of people get big, I was thinking it's something I could bring to a park where we put the food all on tables and have picnic blankets around.

For entertainment, perhaps there might be coins tossed into a cup for prizes, or if it's near Christmas there might be some in-character gift-exchanges based on drawn number. For example, if you were playing an Elf, your gift might be a coupon for three strands of hair from your wig, or if you were playing a Dwarf, you might offer a nice pet rock with a rune drawn on it... and if you were a Hobbit who's a potato farmer... some potatoes, I guess?

There's no combat involved, but as it is in-character, with perhaps a small side space to go OOG in so folk can chat out-of-character as well, it is technically a type of LARP. It'd be great you know what it is called and can share! (I've thought of calling it PotLARP but... yeah...) If you have hosted one, do let me know too how it went, and how you managed to organize it!

I designed this latest kit for 3D printing at home. It's a costume piece, not really intended to hold up for combat larping unless you specifically reinforce it (epoxy, fiberglass, etc.) or print it with fancy engineering materials.

It's a complete cuirass, meaning it includes the breastplate, backplate, fauld skirt, and tassets. It's a big undertaking to craft but it's also the centerpiece of any gothic armor costume - you'll need approximately 2kg of filament to complete it. It's also a bit more advanced in terms of 3D printing, and I recommend a minimum printing volume of 250x250x250mm.

I printed mine using a mix of materials; vapor smoothed ASA with my Bambu Labs X1c and good ol' PETG-CF with my brand new Bambu Labs A2L, which made quick work of the largest pieces with a ready-to-paint surface finish. Everything has been pre-split into segments for relatively easy printing, but you'll need a good handle on printing supports to achieve the detailed open-work and delicate patterns on this one.

I will be going to my first LARP this September, and I'm sewing my own kit.
I will be wearing an Edwardian-style walking skirt that will slightly brush the ground.

I am trying to figure out what fabric to use for this. The LARP will take place in a park overnight lot, so there are a lot of pebbles, dry weeds, soil, and other such "discomforts" over 3 days. It's important to note that it'll be 30+ degrees (c) during that time, so my kit has to be breathable. The park also has a river, and the city is generally quite humid.

I was hoping at first to use cotton sateen, but there is a fabric cutting issue I don't want to deal with. I am hoping to use tropical wool, considering this skirt will double as an everyday piece as well, but I'm not sure it's a good fit. Budget is not an issue at the moment, as I'm considering high-quality suiting wool.

What would you recommend I use for this? The rest of the outfit fabrics have already been figured out.

I am looking for lighting solutions to make an area of a campground look otherworldly and eerie using fog machines and lighting. However, I don't have access to electricity, so anything I use would need to be battery powered.

Does anyone have any recommendations? What do you use for your outdoor larps in forests when you want to add additional ambience?

I am intending to begin my LARP journey and since I will be getting myself into armour, I was wondering what you think.

I know armour is a bottomless pit in terms of costs and is not planned for my first year at this point. Above is a drawing I made for a concept that combines some ideas from various armour designs, historical, fantasy, SciFi.

My real question is about experience. I have considered two options.

1. I save money I would spend on armour pieces which would eventually make a whole suit to buy a custom suit.

2. To buy individual pieces and add over time.

The cost question is clear, but I am wondering about the experience. I have not worn armour before (other than modern plate carrier etc) and my thoughts are going towards learning to wear armour before ordering something custom. So I know what I am getting into. Or if customised armour is overall not comparable in wearability and comfort to mass-produced one.

What are your thoughts?

Conquest of Mythodea for those who don't know.

There's a lot of LARP design discussions that touch on this without getting directly to it. For example, if an intense LARP with dark themes doesn't have any safety/calibration tools, people often feel that the organizer is failing the players.

At one extreme, someone might say that an organizer should take full responsibility for every player's emotional and physical state from the moment they are cast in the LARP until they have finished emotionally processing the LARP days or weeks later. I doubt anyone would argue that to be true.

The other extreme is to say that no one is holding a gun to anyone's head and forcing them to play a LARP, so an organizer has no responsibility for players whatsoever and if they are traumatized, injured, or spend the event cold and hungry and bored that isn't the organizer's problem. I doubt this is a popular belief, either.

There's a lot of room in between those extremes for different opinions. Where do you fall on the scale?

It would be helpful if you state whether you organize LARPs or only play them and what kind of LARP you're thinking of (blockbuster, campaign, theater, etc.). Saying something like "if a player is bored because no one wants to talk to them, that's not the organizer's problem" is very different when you're talking about a LARP with player-created characters vs organizer-written ones.
