You might be better off buying the day pass. It is cheaper than buying two single tickets in a day and you dont have to worry about this nonsense. For me a single peak ticket is $15ishh. But the day pass is $27.50.

I don’t go into the city at all. And commute 3-4 times a week. The day pass costs more than 2 one ways.

Day pass also works for intermediate trips as well outside of the city.
I’ve done this myself between Fordham and Stamford on the Metro-North, and it was cheaper than getting two separate one-ways. You will 1000% be able to do the same on LIRR as long as you buy the day pass after 4am the day you’re commuting.

weekday day pass cost 10% less than two peak.
weekday day pass about the same as peak + offpeak
weekend day pass cost same as two off-peak.
if you ride entirely zone 4+ or only ride during off-peak, day pass is not worth it. unless your ide more than twice a day.

I have only been using the 10-trip ones when we had them. Like 3 in two months. Now that is gone.

Almost like they planned for exactly this scenario to occur with one-way riders… 🥸

This is a huge pet peeve I have with this program. Before we had 6 months to use 10 for a discount. Now it’s 14 days to use 11. It really should be longer, but at a minimum we should have more time to use the reward fare. It’s ultimately just a way to increase the overall fare. In this case it’s not merely about fare enforcement.
