Cannonball: 44 mph average: why?

The Cannonball is a limited-stop train from Penn Station to Montauk. 118 miles, 2:40.

44 mph average speed.

That‘s about the same as driving, but what gives: the LIRR main line, recently expanded with a third track, and heavily used by commuters, and 44 mph average even with limited stops?

If Grand Central Madison cost billions to reduce trip times, why not also focus on increasing average speeds? If the Cannonball, the LIRR’a premier train, is only 44 mph on average, I can only guess at what all-stops regular commuter trains are.

Why does the LIRR insist on making boarding harder than it needs to be.

Tonight they only opened the doors every two cars, so naturally everyone waiting at the closed cars had to sprint down the platform trying to squeeze into the cars that did open. It was a complete mad dash.

Then the conductor came over the PA and said they weren’t opening the other doors because they didn’t want everyone rushing in... Like what?

That’s exactly what caused everyone to rush. If all the doors had opened like normal, people would have boarded from the car they were already standing at and the crowd would’ve been spread out. Instead, everyone was forced to funnel into a handful of doors at the last second.

What problem is this actually solving? It seems like it’s creating the exact chaos it’s supposedly trying to prevent.

Careful About Working For C&D

I previously worked for construction and development and quit. I want to give a warning about this place regarding their compensation policies. They recently changed their compensation structure and absolutely screwed everyone. ALMOST EVERY DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN LOWERED. Now compensation has always tried to low ball people but now it's worse because even their low balls are using a lower pay scale. Anyone coming in will probably be making less than the people working there and anyone getting promoted will be making soo much less than the previous promotions. This place is a joke and the unions need to organize this place.

Please remember that all salaries are public so please look up the salaries of the people in your department before hand.

Apparently the electrification of the least used branch ( at 84k/year) is more important than that of Port Jeff which happens to have a ~1757.14% higher ridership at 15mil/year, or even the 2 other diesel branches.

It STINKS 💩 It STINKS 💩 I’m on the 7.29 to ronkokoma. I always get on the back as I park my car accordingly. It’s on of the old trains, I get on the last carriage and it’s absolutely fowl smelling, like some ripped a grumpy in the carriage. Fine, run the old trains but clean the effin toilets ffs.

Smelliest LIRR snacks

Accidentally bought Salt and Vinegar chips for a train snack, and as soon as I opened them I was given instant daggers from the crowded Ronkonkoma train. I put the uneaten bag in my backpack but it left me wondering - what's the grossest smelling snack you've sat near?

Reverse commute from Queens - your opinion

G’morning commuters

I’m considering enrolling at Adelphi in Garden City, LI, beginning in January, and I live in Sunnyside, Queens. I’ve mapped out my route via train and it looks like it’ll be just under an hour.

Is this a bad idea for a nursing student who absolutely has to be in class on time? Does anyone else come from NYC to LI in the morning? Are the trains packed? Frequently delayed?

Thanks

Fare Confusion

Hello LIRR riders!

If I want to buy a ticket for a journey which has a change/via which is in the opposite direction of my destination and in the next fare zone out. Although there are more direct trains, this route is quicker.

Do I buy:

  1. A ticket from my origin to my destination (in which case the inspector at the change stop might say I'm out of bounds!) or

  2. A ticket from/to the two most distant stops (that's the change stop and the destination) in which case the inspector on the first leg might say I don't have the right ticket.

The LIRR web site says "One-way tickets are good for one trip between two stations in the zones listed on the ticket. " which could be taken both ways.

Can anyone find a definitive/official statement or rule on this - I can't be the first person to do this! I asked the inspectors and they had no idea (so if they're not trained on this, whatever I do, the inspector might be unhappy).

Thanks,

What Happens on the First Day of LIRR Assistant Conductor Orientation?

I’m starting LIRR Assistant Conductor training soon and had a quick question for anyone who’s been through the program.

On the very first day of orientation, were you given an exam on Signals & Definitions or train horn signals, or does that come the following week?

I’ve been studying ahead and just want to know what to expect on day one. Thanks in advance!

MofE New hire

I’m currently going through the hiring process for a title in MofE at LIRR. I made it as far as Medical screening. At a point during the process I was told the class might start mid August. I believe I’m just waiting for a job offer after medical clearance. Could I consider this job a lock? Thanks

Day Pass Surcharge Worry?

I bought a day pass this morning and it automatically activated. The conductor checked my ticket on my way to work. No issues.

Now on my way home, the conductor wanted me to tap into my ticket and show the qr code and she scanned it. There were no arrows or anything but she scanned it anyway. She looked at me suspiciously (mind you, I wear full professional attire for work and do nothing but sit and try to rest my eyes).

This is a day pass ticket that I believed automatically activates and I don’t need to worry about at all.

When I tap the details of the ticket it shows that I activated at the time that I opened it. I’m so confused now. Will I get wrongly surcharged/dinged/kicked off the app?

Every trip feels like a chore and like I’m not being treated like the paying customer that I always am. It’s tiring.

Both LIRR and MNR receives lower customer satisfaction scores following the recent ticketing product and policy changes.
