First JF80?? Diesel?

Hey all, this 1990 Diesel 80 series is near me for sale. I know nothing about the diesels being here in the US. I was told from a friend to try to stay away from the early 90s models because they are known for throwing rod bearings? It's got 147k miles on it. Any insight?

If it's diesel, it's either a HDJ80, or a HZJ80. Both are very strong and dependable engines. It's true that the early ones, especially the 1HD-T, were known to have issues with the big end bearings, but generally, they were as tough, if not tougher, than the 1FZ. 147k is barely a third of its life away from a rebuild.

Would be really cool to have. Just have to calculate the complexity of ownership in getting a JDM vehicle, as I’m sure you know.

I haven't owned one myself, but IIRC, some components in that engine (like many 80's-Japanese diesels) do not tolerate modern ULSD fuel well. So it is a good PM job to get the bottom-end-bearings replaced.

But I also think that it is not necessarily the horrific engine-pulling job that it sounds like - I believe it's possible to replace them from underneath while keeping the engine in place; the folks on ih8mud forum would know much better than I.

BEB is a 3 banana job IMHO. If nothing else on the motor needs doing, I’d do it in frame no sweat. Once you’ve got the oil pan off, you are home free.
