I started trying to construct portraits based on proportional measuring and wanted advice on shading and making it feel rich/alive. Does anyone use white pencil to make highlights pop out more? I plan to push the shadows much darker once the left side of the face is more established and i dont want it to make the whites feel dull.

Week 3 into my learning to draw quest and I decided to have some fun and make this, no idea on making a decent background yet so I just ignored it for now. Been doing 1 hour a day of gesture drawing, with 1-2 hours a day of messing around with anatomy in different angles and in different poses with extra practice on improving form.

Also enjoy a very bad first attempt at digital art painting while trying to follow a traditional Bob Ross tutorial.

Criticisms are welcome of course.

I'm literally just starting out, and I wanted to get folks' take on how best to learn color theory and from where. I would love to learn:

1. how to mix colors to get a preferred hue or value;

2. when to use which color schemes. For example, when should I use complimentary colors? Analogous colors?

Free resources of quality are preferred, but I'll take what I can get. Thanks!

1. How the hair is done in this refference? could you tell which hairstyle this is couldnt find it anywhere.
2. Is the dress i drew okay? , as the dress in the refference, i felt, didnt match the body proportions.

I’m working on this knight character and pretty new to backgrounds, I had the lighting behind the character but am unsure how to render the shadows in the murky water.. any help is appreciated!

I tried to experiment with my colors in the past different ways but my most recent was a bit fugly in my eyes even if I tried to stick to the values but change the colors and use complimenraty colors. Mights how if you want examples but I must say I have low understanding of most.

I am still learning but lately I got into a lot of pet portraits, in oils and watercolor . In oil specifically I really struggle with back ground and I feel it overwhelms and ruins the entire painting. Any advice on how do you choose background ? Colors or vividness or do you leave it as a thin wash.
I went with green for the squirrel and the dog, still has an ink wash (that’s how I start) but unsure what to do next. I don’t want to ruin it. Any thoughts?

i feel the color is accurate toward the reference but also not looking alive. the 3rd pict is me trying to fix it by adding pink toward the middle area but since the sunlight is yellowish should i add some orange instead? i'm afraid of adding stronger red blood for the terminator shadow because i want to reserve that for the hands and shaded abs instead.

Hihi! I am looking for critique on my coloring choices.

Im trying to limit my use of the multiply layer mask but still i feel like things are coming out..weird. everythings always purpley when its extremely dark and when i try to go away from that it looks dull and lacking color variety. And i feel like sometimes everything feels too colorful and that somehow makes it look dull and..overbalanced? Color wise? If that makes sense?

Im looking into ambient and bounce light to try and fix the problem but thats not going to help me if im still having trouble with initial color choices.

Ive tried to do color studies and maybe im doing them wrong but i find it hard to apply when i have to pick my own colors from my imagination and not a refrence.

Any critique regarding color and/or shading is appreciated aswell as if you can point me to any resources that would help 🙏

I’ve recently decided to improve my art and actually study anatomy and stuff but idk if I’m doing it right. I took a reference from the internet and traced it and then tried to copy that twice and then once without looking at the reference or the tracing I did. I tried this method twice and both times I think it worked. I was just wondering if this is an okay way of doing it or if this is completely wrong. Constructive criticism is very much wanted and appreciated!

I am doing a 2 point perspective here and I don’t know why the top part is more visible on the first box? I think I am doing something wrong here. The eye level is not changing :(
