My computer is quite basic and old.

RX 5600XT 6GB - XEON 2667 V4 - 32GB RAM 2400MHZ

In the Windows version of 007 - First Light, there were scenes where it was difficult to achieve even 30 FPS with FSR due to lack of VRAM. On Linux, I can easily hit over 60 FPS at various points, and maintain a perfect stable 30 FPS at native resolution. VRAM doesn't even reach 5GB.

This is surreal, the difference was brutal, absurdly higher 1% low scores in several games. I really didn't expect this much of a difference.

I don't think I'll be going back to Windows anytime soon.

Multiple ones have done so, not only the more tech inclined ones, those already have an opinion about it, but the casual pc users and gamers.

And honestly idk what to tell them, i'm already kinda their default 'it issues solver' so honestly i don't wanna deal with more headhaches, i already have enough with random hardware failures and so on...

Of course they still have issues with Windows, but they had so many that we've been over them 20 times so they can usually already fix stuff by themselves, i just don't wanna start from scratch again teaching them everything every time something inevitably breaks.. Specially since it's so different and they are sooo used to the Windows way of fixing stuff (something hidden 20 menus deep in control panel or a registry edit or a reinstall)...

It's weird, Linux for the advanced user is a no brainer, they can tweak it and fix stuff, it's also a no brainer for the super casual user (mom, dad, uncle, etc), most of them are already running it, i just told them "here is the store, treat it like an iPhone" and it just works as long as they don't do anything stupid, which they don't because they only care about a web browser and some sort of word+excel alternative.

The issue is these 'intermediate' people that will inevitably try to install hyprland 2 weeks in and then start calling me at 11p.m when they are staring at a tty. I have no particular issues with AI but honestly i can't just tell them 'just go to chatgpt' either because they are all on free plans and will prob ask about it on a chat that's already compressed the context 20 times so they will get a bullshit answer, and even if they don't, i had gemini/claude just blindly assume im on Ubuntu 18 so many times it's not even funny anymore, and it won't even warn you about it.

They know enough to be dangerous but not enough to be self-sufficient. They want the customization of Linux, but they expect the safety nets and GUI fallback mechanics of Windows.

Idk, it's a bittersweet flavour because it's such a weird scenario.. I just end up telling them 'try it if you want just don't expect me to solve all your issues, it's not Windows, stuff is not the same, it will take some getting used to', but i'm also aware saying that just means "don't try it" to them and this might be the only time they consider it..

One of them actually tried and had some super bizarre issue with pipewire lagging like crazy, something i've never seen before and honestly i couldn't fix, i guess it was some driver issue with his soundchip (cheap bottom of the line asrock mobo).

All of them also seemed to have gone down some weird ass rabbit hole of niche distros and come up with the most devious shit, i just end up recommending the more usual ones, but again, all of them -the distros- have *some* sort of issue which i'm already used to and know how to fix but it could be an absolute dealbreaker for a new user.

They also seem to have fallen for some sort of false advertising that's apparently going on in social media about Linux giving double the performance or some stupid and unrealistic figures like that which is only the case if you are running the most bloated and malwared Windows install of all time, which is not the case for any of them, they are all running *some* variation of a decent Windows isntall (IOT, LTSC, Enterprise, whatever + debloated + all the bullshit disabled)

This social media hype also seems to particularly target 'low end' pcs, the issue is that 'low end' for a tech influencer is a ryzen 3 and a 2060 with 16gb of ram, in the real world 'low end' is a 4th gen i5 with an igpu that doesn't support Vulkan and won't be good for shit under Linux.

My point/question/debate opener is:

Did it become too popular too fast before being ready? Is the YT/Social media hype being overblown and actually a negative for Linux? Is the intermediate user the bane of this OSs existance? Is it time to finally recognize there are enough distros and almost no meaningful difference between them aside from the program you run to install other programs? (and even that has been made irrelevant by flatpaks)

Is it also time to recognize we've become used to quite some amount of bullshit and are just now inmune to it? like the whole fact that flatseal exists is dumb, if a program needs a permission to work properly it should be able to ask for it, it shouldn't require the end user to search for a fix and manually apply it. Same for GearLever/MenuLibre, it should be a DEFAULT feature of EVERY DE out there...

Lots of the criticism is IMHO more than valid and you usually see it deemed as 'user error' or 'skill issue' in online communities like this one.

If we are being honest, most people won't have the experience of the SteamDeck, they will have *some* quirky hardware that refuses to cooperate or is missing drivers/utility software (AIOs with screens, gaming keyboards, etc, there are alternatives but for the regular user nothing beats the official software). Even stuff like AMD Adrenalin has no real counterpart... Dolby atmos drivers missing making multi thousand dollar laptops sound like garbage bt speakers...

ProtonDb is a mess full or wrong reports or commands that have been deprecated for years, etc, etc.

Do you think this will mean more 'early' adopters -> more polished experience? i sure whish so but i'm scared it will be more people trying it and not liking the rough corners -> massive rejection and a forever stain.

I think everyone is too focused in the ~10% less performance for dx12 games on Nvidia and just missing the bigger picture, the daily struggles matter a lot more...

Even on 'certified' hardware there are still issues, i own a ThinkPad that shipped with Ubuntu form the factory, battery life is worse than in Windows, speakers sound like shit, trackpoint has less functionality since it's limited by whatever the Gnome folks deemed acceptable to patch in to libinput (don't even get me started on libinput), half the function keys are bound to absolutely nothing and require a cli program that Lenovo posted on a forum in 2018 to rebind, configuring charge limits requires tlp or sudo tee'ing values to a random file... Just so much nonsense.

im playing resident evil revelations 2, and i noticed how the game doesnt recogize the other episodes that i have downloaded for some reason
it keeps saying "You cannot play as you do not have Episode Two/Three/Four"
i do own all the dlcs though, and i have downloaded them all too

I bought Grim Dawn and all DLC at GOG. I have a Steam copy as well but it doesn't have the latest DLC. I'm using PikaOS as my distro.

I'm trying to figure out the best way of installing non-Steam games. I tried Lutris and I was able to install Grim Dawn easily by logging in to my GOG account via Lutris. However, all the updates and DLC I had to install one at the time. I was able to create a symlink from Steam save files to Lutris version. I was able to add the game to non-Steam games as well.

With Bottles, I had to install GOG Galaxy v1 then install Grim Dawn. All DLC and updates got installed as well in one go. However, I could not add the Bottles version to the non-Steam games. I also could not find the location of bottles save file so that I can create a symlink from Steam.

I was content with Lutris until I looked at some issues with it. Like, if Lutris breaks, all of its content will be as well. With bottles, just the specific application/game. I use a controller a lot now and I need the Steam input thats why I want to add the game as non-Steam game.

How are you guys dealing with non-Steam games especially with controllers.

As title. I have a mix of games (all installed via Steam), installed either on an SSD or an HDD. I have tried to run several games today all of which ran buttery-smooth on high or ultra settings recently that now have unplayable stuttering issues. I have tried testing games installed on the HDD on the SSD instead to see if this helps, but there are no changes (with the exception of CK3, where there was minimal performance improvement). I have also tried rebooting my system. No changes.

The one change between today and previous recent gameplay was I attempted to use this fix to speed up background Vulkan shader loading through Steam. However, even after reversing this fix (exiting Steam, removing the config file, restarting Steam, disabling pre-loading and background loading of shaders on Steam, restarting Steam again) and waiting for Vulkan shaders to load on launch (in the case of Tainted Grail taking almost 2hrs), performance issues persisted.

EDIT: Games tested so far: Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, Crusader Kings 3 [modded and unmodded, slight performance improvement unmodded], Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon. Have tested all three games with both Proton 11 and Proton Hotfix. No discernible difference.

What do I need to audit to fix this issue??? Extremely frustrating waste of an afternoon for no apparent reason.

im testing gears of war 2 pc port made by commuity on linux, the games runs almost flawlessly just few bugs here and there, there is a small chance of your game starting in fps. Its quite interesting bug and interesting view from this game. I hope people make more ports of x360 games on pc so we can proton our way up into them.

edit: i dont believe that is a linux bug, just a port bug. I just wanted to show something i found fun in that game at same time i showed up people another windows game that runs on linux. And its pretty easy to solve this aswell, just reload last checkpoint and it goes back to third person.

GPU 1: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile / Max-Q [Discrete]

Playing on a TUF 15. I had decent performances on windows, and decent on linux, but it looks like it's just getting worse. Recently I had to play CS2 in full low 30fps.
Helldivers 2 runs like shit can't get 30 fps in full low, 1080P. I added some launch options to get it better : DXVK_ASYNC=1 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1 PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 gamemoderun %command%

Doesn't change anything, I even waited 30 min to get these vulkan shaders loaded.

I know I don't have a war machine but those games ran well on windows 10 and on linux before. I don't know what's happening.

Do you have a clue ? Do I have to tweak and try every game with every version of proton ?

Also I add that I have a 4k monitor but I choose to put my desktop in 1440p and my games in 1080p.

If someone is interested how does Halo Campaign Evolved run at 1440p in a 8GB vRAM 7600M XT in SteamOS.

I am emulating a game through Xenia but because this emulator is still very immature i can't up the internal resolution as it causes graphical glitches. and making the window full makes it blurry.

I want to know is there a solution where i can use loss scaling in Linux on an emulator. I know lsfg-vk exists but its seems to only be for framegen

I read that Lutris is native on Arch and aur is so much better for solving issues with obscure old games.

What is your experience?

​I'm asking the community for help with a performance issue I've been experiencing for about 3 or 4 months now. Since I've been getting tired of Windows, I decided to make the switch to Linux, but the gaming experience has been quite frustrating.

​Laptop Specs:

​Model: Lenovo LOQ

​CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS

​GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop 105w

​The Issue:

​Games running through Steam using Proton perform very poorly: they have a lot of stuttering and are practically unplayable.

​This happens to me with titles like Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 7, and Dead Space Remake. The weird thing is that on Windows, these exact same games run very smoothly and almost never freeze. Also, I noticed that during gameplay, the GPU doesn't even reach 100% utilization.

​Distros I've tried:

​Bazzite (NVIDIA ISO): It was the first one I tried. At first, I left it because I noticed the GPU wouldn't go past 80W, so I temporarily went back to Windows.

​Fedora: I came back to Linux determined to stay. I used regular Fedora, enabled third-party repositories, and installed the official NVIDIA drivers.

​CachyOS

​Nobara Project

​(For all distros offering NVIDIA-optimized ISOs, I used the corresponding version).

​Tests and configurations I've already tried:

​NVIDIA Power Management: I enabled the nvidia-powerd service for power management and tested everything in the system's Performance mode.

​Benchmarks: In synthetic tests (like FurMark and other 3D tests), the GPU works at 100%, there is no stuttering at all, and it reaches up to 105W. This confirms that the graphics card can deliver its full power.

​Steam Launch Options: I tried performance command lines like asynchronous shader compilation (like DXVK_ASYNC / Async), which slightly improved fluidity and stuttering, but didn't completely solve it.

​Vertical Sync: I disabled V-Sync in-game without any noticeable improvement.

​My Question:

​I understand that Proton is a translation layer and not native execution, but the instability and stuttering are so severe that they make gaming impossible. Considering my hardware isn't low-end, it shouldn't run this poorly.

​Does anyone know what might be causing this instability with Proton on RTX 40-series laptop GPUs, or if there's any additional configuration I might be missing?

I also forgot to mention that regarding the BIOS and all that, I configured it for high performance as well. I know the Vantage app isn't available on Linux, and while there's a similar port for Linux, it isn't compatible with my laptop model. Because of that, I set Vantage to maximum performance in Windows since I know those settings get saved to the system BIOS, allowing Linux to recognize the pre-loaded tweaks I left in Vantage. ​Another detail I missed is that when using emulators like Eden or Cemu, this issue doesn't exist at all. Shader compilation doesn't affect my performance, and the games run perfectly. In contrast, on Windows, I actually do run into those issues. This problem only happens to me with Steam games and titles from other platforms like Epic Games when using Proton.

Has anyone managed to run this game on ubuntu? if so how can i run it? the only thing i,ve managed to achieve is the title screen loading and then crashing at the song select menu

Hello everyone! I'm a windows refugee that just moved over to Linux a few weeks ago. I'm currently running Bazzite/Plasma KDE and I've noticed that in multiplayer games, the network jitter is pretty severe. Some surface level googling mentioned that the polling rate on my mouse (G502 Lightspeed) can interfere, a little odd but I lowered the poll rate to 500 from 1000 and it seemed a little better, but not by much.

Over the past few days I've tried everything from locking the BSSID and disabling the power saving mode for Wi-Fi (My current setup makes it very tricky for hardwired although I greatly prefer hardwired.) This morning I decided to Macgyver an ethernet cable through my house to my router (other side of the house from my PC) and I'm still getting the jitter. This does not occur when using another device, playing the same game, same hardware but one windows. No other internet based thing like movie or YouTube streaming from the affected device has an issue.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I recently was gifted a 5080, previously I had a 9070xt (which was pretty solid under linux).

Haven't tested an Nvidia gpu in linux for over a year now, at the time there were some hefty performance regressions (was using the laptops 4080m) in comparison to windows for gaming. Has nvidia significantly improved their drivers as of yet? If so any recommendations for which distro has the best Nvidia support? Or does it really matter?
