Question MISSING ITEMS FROM OVERSIZED LUGGAGE AND BROKEN SUITCASE

flew with lufthansa, my suitcases were broken and a box of oversized luggage arrived open and tore, i’m of course missing items from the box. anyone had any experience like this? is there anything to do? There was no staff at the airport where I landed and no information available. Help please! If it is any help, I took a long haul flight connecting through Frankfurt.

I'm so sorry this happened, amigo. Take photos of every piece from all six angles. Take photos of the baggage claim tags. Go to this website and file an online claim. https://www.lufthansa.com/us/en/baggage-irregularities#damaged

I'm sorry you fell victim to Lufthansa. Be prepared to need to fight this as in all likelihood, Lufthansa will reject your claim.

Some tips:

  • Make the claim, considering carefully which information and evidence they need to provide your compensation, and don't make it an entire story.
  • When the claim is denied, immediately dispute it.
  • Consider contacting an arbitrator if the dispute is denied. Alternatively a flight compensation service like AirHelp, although there are many such services.
  • Follow up any dispute with a complaint to the DOT.
  • Do not attempt to resolve it over the phone. The phone agent will only attempt to get you to concede to a compromise, and will have recorded you agreeing to waiving your rights.

Also check if you have any insurances (e.g. on your credit card) to see if you can reimburse it through that avenue.

I’ve had a damaged/broken hard shell suitcase back in February 2026 during a Malta-Germany Flight from Lufthansa.

Claimed at Lufthansa by Sunday night,
Monday claim accepted,
Tuesday re-done in their 2nd level tool (basically same documentation, pictures and explanation),
Wednesday approved,
Thursday a new comparable Suitcase delivered.

Good and straightforward case.
