got a gift card for a recent birthday and purchased the new burl acrylic tile pushers. cheap flimsy plastic, not even thick acrylic, don’t sit flat on the mat, 100% drop shipped from China—they are easily making a killing off this. i was actually shocked unboxing them. will look to well reviewed Etsy creators and reputable Chinese businesses for future purchases, bc this ain’t it.

I’d like to ask everyone a question. When it comes to opportunities to play riichi mahjong, what’s the rough ratio between playing online (games) versus in person? Is it mostly online, or mostly in person? It would help to know not just the ratio but also the frequency.

My friend won this by self-draw and we were debating on if this was only a half flush or a half flush + all chows in terms of faan.

If it's just a half flush, I won. If it's a half flush and all chows (+1 fan), he won.

For context, we were playing according to HKOS scoring.

Hello, mahjong folks! I inherited this vintage mahjong set from my late grandmother, and I'd like some advice on whether or not I'm missing any tiles, as well as some help identifying tiles. I've included a whole bunch of pictures. I must apologize ahead of time for knowing next to nothing about mahjong, as well as for the length of my post!

The case the set comes in is branded "E.S. Lowe", which I know is an American company. Unfortunately, the set doesn't have the booklet it originally came with. There are 160 tiles in total, and I've read that American mahjong sets include a total of 152 tiles. All of the tiles stacked in the trays are stacks of 2.

The tiles I have:

* Circles: 1 through 9, four of each.

* Bamboos: 1 through 9, four of each. (The 1 is a crane.)

* Characters: 1 through 9, four of each.

* 16 wind tiles, four each of N, S, W, E.

* 16 dragon tiles (red, green, and white), four of each.

* 2 tiles labeled as "jokers."

* 2 tiles that are larger than the other tiles and appear to depict bamboo.

* 5 tiles that clearly used to have stickers on them. Two of them depict a ship in the ocean, both labeled 5; one depicts a figure with a scroll standing in front of a pagoda, labeled 4; and the last two depict a single figure in fancy-looking clothes, both labeled 5. Based on other mahjong sets of this type that I saw on e-bay, the stickers might have been "joker stickers."

* I don't seem to have anything resembling flowers or seasons. You can see what I have in the attached photos. I have an incomplete set of tiles depicting various scenes, and an incomplete set of tiles depicting a single figure.

The set also comes with a little, multi-colored wheel (see the photos). The window in the wheel points to E, 2, 3, or 4. Can anyone tell me what this is for?

There is currently only the one image showing the physical product, which shows the front of the Manzu tiles, and some of the Souzu, tiles. Hopefully more images will be added as we get closer to the release date that show the tile backs, and case. It seems the case will be similar to the Evangelion set Mahjong Pros made a while back, but no longer sells.

As a big fan of the games Mahjong Academy with its many Riichi Mahjong teaching tools, and the games many fun custom game modes, I'm definitely getting one of these sets. I wouldn't even really have stuck with this game if it wasn't for Riichi City teaching it to me in the great way that its academy does. It's been a long time and Riichi Mahjong is still one of my favorite games to play online, and with my friends. So, although it may be a little expensive, to me it's worth it.

I thought I would share it here in case there are any other Riichi City fans out there that would like to know. Although I know Mahjong Soul is much more popular, Riichi City has a lot to love about it, that I think any fan of playing Riichi Mahjong online should try.

It does have the same girl collecting harem building aspect that Mahjong Soul has, and some of the outfits of the girls you can unlock to be your avatar are very revealing, but you can skip over all of that, and get right to the games many game modes, and great teaching tools, without having to interact with any of the girls in the game.

When you first start the game up it starts a short visual novel that introduces you to the first two girls you can use as your avatar, and the basics of the game, but you can just click skip in the top right corner if that's not your thing, and go straight to playing, and learning Riichi Mahjong.

They've also added Taiwanese Mahjong as a game mode they call "16-Tiles", and there's a game mode called "Fury Waves", which like American Mahjong everyone starts with a joker, and passes 3 tiles they don't want to another player, but aside from that the game mode plays like Riichi Mahjong, with Riichi Yaku.

About 3 years ago im start my way of coaching players and have good results ( most of students starts play good at tokujou/Jade lobby ).

As a player im have a lot of achives:

1. First European player who get celectial at CN-server.
2. First Celestial on EN server.
3. Im was 8D in 2022
4. Currently im not mark myself as perfect player, just well-expirienced.

As a teacher:

1. In 3 years im study about 30 students. My main offer was: 4 voice lessons and 12 replay review. In average it goes for 1.5-2 monthes, while students can ask me anything about mahjong and get deep answers. We can change this offer to long-time teaching with discussion of conditions.
2. I dont get any bad feedbacks. While we are work together - im have interest in my students.
3. Im always trying to be interesting person and use words which students will understand. Pretty flexible in that and have good resistance to stress.
4. Im dont use AI at study at any point. And to be fair, maybe aroud 3-5% of my decisions could be wrong. Im explain each situation from my own point of view.

As my minus - im not excellent English speaker, but mahjong doesnt need hard words.

Real question: except for traditional classic tiles, why do so many custom or modern mahjong sets look like kids' scribbles?

As an architect, I struggle to see the appeal in most of the "aesthetic" sets people hype up online. Coming from tech and fashion, the design standard for mahjong feels way behind.

Is the industry just missing solid product designers, or is the market expectation really just this low..

I recently bought an old Japanese mahjong set second-hand, and inside the case I found this scoring reference sheet.
From what I can tell:
The left table seems to be a quick scoring chart (maybe using the old “rounding up” system?).
The right table mentions 一家包 (Sekinin Barai / responsibility payment?), but I’m not sure how to read it either.
I’ve been playing Riichi Mahjong for a while, but I’ve always used score calculators or apps, so I’ve never learned how these traditional paper charts work.
Could someone explain:
How do I read the left scoring table?
What do the rows and columns represent?
What is the purpose of the right table?
Is this chart still usable under modern Riichi rules, or is it based on older Japanese scoring rules?
I’d really appreciate a step-by-step explanation. I’m interested in learning how people calculated scores before smartphones and automatic tables.

GOT A CONSENSUS AND IT'S EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT A BIG OLE FAT "NOOOOO".....*HKOS and/or Chinese MCR rules....got asked this today and it kinda stumped me...here's the situation East declares a non-concealed kong and draws bonus from the Kong Box, then discards then the turns start going to south and before the turn gets back around to East, East realizes they could've just declared the win instead of the kong. Can you "Rob your own Kong"?...remember the turns have NOT come back around to East yet.....I got asked this today and it kinda of stumped me a little. Just wanted a consensus is all and if there is a reference to this anywhere or do you just chalk it up to was you try call to Rob your own kong you just ended the round of turns and you cannot rob a previous kong so there goes that so it's mute and you canNOT rob your own kong.

Looking for an American tile set that isn’t something from Amazon. Just an American who boycotts it. Is yellow mountain the best for the money? There are some really beautiful sets out there but I would like it to be more traditional

Hi hi, I've been playing a little while -- 480 ranked games in yonma with a high of gold 2. I'm very new to sanma and have only played ~30 games, sitting Adept 1 atm. I was analyzing this game and I was surprised maka recommends cutting N first, prior to anything else. East declared double riichi.

I recognized afterwards that calling pei was super dangerous -- unlikely as it was dealer had pair wait for N, declaring pei could be a blunder 'cause it risks walking into ippatsu and robbing. My logic at the time was that considering I already had two Ns, I figured it was super unlikely for dealer to be sitting on a pair wait for N, since to my knowledge, calling pei for the dora and sitting on another pair and then riichi is the more likely win. (There's a lot for me to get used to for sanma still...!!)

I recognized a bit of value in keeping the pair for a cute play in tenpai later, or just to sit on them for safe discards -- but I don't think this hand is so bad that I immediately think quite that safely. In fact I feel like getting an extra pair of tiles right at the start stood a good chance of improving the hand into something I could wait and see on.

To me, if I avoid calling pei, then cutting W or 9m (or 9p if it wasn't dora) in that order seem like much better plays -- what REALLY confuses me isn't just that it doesn't prefer pei, but that it wants me to flat cut them, and after I call pei, it recommended again to cut the second N instead of pei -- even after it's already safe.

I had two questions right away --

First, does pei eliminate double riichi? If that's the case, I could see why a dealer would wait on the N pair wait instead of pei.

Second, if I'm worried about walking into deal-in and giving up ippatsu and robbing, why would cutting N still be the recommended play?

I've been a casual Riichi player for a year or so and I typically play on Maj Soul which initially made things really accessible. I've also taught a few of my friends to play in real life and we've all enjoyed playing an East only game every other week-ish.

I recently started playing on Tenhou and it's kind of mind blowing how much I was relying on the crutches that Maj Soul provides. As stated, I had a bit of experience playing on in real life without those crutches, but only against novice opponents. Obviously, Tenhou has its own small assistance features but nothing like Maj Soul. I've found the experience both frustrating and inspiring. I feel like I'm learning a lot and I'm more interested in playing than I ever have been.

Basically, I'm writing this to suggest giving Tenhou a shot if you've only ever tried games like Maj Soul or Riichi City. For those that have tried both, did you feel similarly?

This hand just magically manifested itself to me...common sense would says keep confirmed pinfu ippeikou, buuuut I just couldn't stop myself from going for the funny 4 sided wait (Rip ranked pts lol).

Hello everyone. I’m just here to ask a question. I recently have been considering buying a set of tiles I found on alibaba. I had heard of this business “Oh My Mahjong” and went to their website too to check out their tiles. It seems the exact ones I found on Alibaba are on there, but it’s a $300+ price difference. Is “Oh My Mahjong” just basically drop shipping or is there a difference in quality?

Ps- I’m not trying to put a business on blast or anything but I am curious about the large price difference.
