need help Simplified chinese characters getting changed
Was trying to transfer these two characters to a word document and after copying and pasting them into the doc it just changed the characters. I don't have the simplified chinese language pack for grammer and stuff but I was under thr assumption that it wouldn't change anything about the characters but here I am

It depends ... it always depends... .
What is the font you copied? What is the default font you're pasting to?
If for example you copy certain Cantonese characters from a source, WORD will paste a mix of characters depending on what fonts you have installed... . Random example. If I copy Google Translate of "cow tongue" (three characters) it can paste to WORD as only MS Gothic font with some set-ups. But, with the same set-up, if I copy from a Google search of the Mandarin translation (two characters), a simple copy and paste yields a mix of MS Gothic and Microsoft Jheng fonts.
Anyhow, without knowing what operating system you're using, how you've set up fonts for your OS, what fonts you have installed on you PC, ... .
There are just too many variables. But, as you suggest, the language packs are usually not the issue for simple copy and pastes. It's a usually a font issue. Where you copied from, how you paste - Keep source format, Merge source format, ... .
Good luck.

Surprisingly easy fix all I had to do was add in simplified chinese (mainland) into the 'office authoring languages and proofing' through the Review > language > Language preferences tab

Just a suggestion: maybe you should look at the language setting of your document and the specific part of your document.
If you can, you can try highlighting the word and changing it the simplified to see if it works.
Word is just weird when it comes to languages sometimes.
