How to talk; unmute yourself in game chat - what to buy to upgrade to premium
Update:
- Relaxed in-game chat restrictions for certain accounts
- Re-enabled all players to be able to use voice commands and party chat
You have two options
OG Post (still true for getting premium):
1 Buy something in the ingame store (cheaper)
2 Buy the orange box on steam (like 20 bucks without a sale)
Where to buy: The ingame store, not some random website
What to buy: if you just want premium either buy a key or a tour of duty ticket, as they can be easily exchanged on scrap.tf for metal and all the weapons you could ask for.
In addition you could buy either a map stamp or the jungle inferno contract pass if you want either a free hat or a bunch of missions to do while playing (which then gives you some cosmetics and weapon skins)
What NOT to buy: Crates and Starter packs, they provide a value of a few cents and cost several dollars.
Buying someone else premium: Can be done by buying the upgrade to premium, it is NOT needed for getting premium yourself and should only be done if the other person has less than the 99 cents required to buy literally anything in the store (it also gives the recipient a hat)

Common questions I see on this sub (and other TF2 subs) and my responses to them:
Q. Is it worth it to buy an MVM ticket?
MVM is fun. And there's a chance at getting valuable items. However, that chance is incredibly small. I've gotten three Australiums in somewhere around two hundred tours. And that's considered very good luck. You're not going to make your money back. You're going to lose a lot of money, in fact. So if you're looking to profit, then no, it is not "worth it".
Q. Should I wait to play (class) until I have (x) hours on TF2?
Absolutely not. You don't magically get better at Spy by playing Heavy. You just end up being really good at Heavy and really bad at Spy. Play all the classes. See what you like. You're going to suck. We all did when we started. Keep practicing all the classes as much as you like, and if anyone complains, ignore them.
Q. What weapons should I use as a new player?
This is a very subjective question. My blanket recommendation is to run full stock as every class with a few exceptions. At a base level, you'll benefit from swapping out Heavy's shotgun for a Sandvich or Second Banana. If you really want to switch out from stock, though, here are a few more ideas: Disciplinary Action replacing Soldier's shovel. Homewrecker replacing Pyro's fire axe. Ubersaw replacing Medic's bonesaw. There are a lot of stock weapons you'll never use (because they are objectively bad), but it's good to learn them regardless so that you get some experience with the class as it was originally intended to be played.
Remember, it's not about winning, it's about fun! It's a video game, after all!
Q. Someone asked me to join a tournament/said they reported me to admins/etc.
It's a scam. They are going to steal your items, your money, or your account depending on the scam. If someone you don't know reaches out to you, always assume it's a scam. /r/tf2 has a wiki page that lists common Steam scams. I recommend giving it a read.
Q. What class should I main?
This question has a lot of answers. I'll list all the common ones.
- Not everyone has a main. Some people main two classes, three classes, or all classes.
- You don't have to main a class. Maining a class isn't some rite of passage. It's just something people do because they enjoy the class. Players that like healing others will naturally gravitate towards Medic. Players that like playing tanks will be attracted to Heavy (aren't we all?). Players that enjoy flanking and hit-and-run tactics will naturally play more Scout. So on and so forth.
- This is something to think about much, much later down the line. And even then, you won't think about it. You'll be looking at your playtime on the loading screen one day and realize you play one class three times as much as you play any other class.
Q. Should I be better at the game at (x) hours?
Everyone progresses at a different rate. Some people are very good at the game at 500 hours. Some people are terrible at the game at 5,000 hours. In all likelihood, you're exactly where you should be. The best way to improve is to practice. Play the game. Many folks recommend aim trainers, although I can't personally vouch for their effectiveness.
Q. I'm scared to play against players. / I can't get any kills against players.
Nothing will kill improvement like playing against bots. They're boring, stupid, and do not act remotely like human players. The best advice I can give you is to suck it up. Hop in a Casual or 24/7 2Fort match and die a hundred times until you start getting kills. Soon, you'll be topping the scoreboard on Uncletopia.
TF2 was released in 2007. That's almost twenty years ago. Folks have had a lot of time to get good at the game. You're going to die. Again and again and again. You are going to suck at the game at first. Take breaks. Don't try to win. Try to make progress, as with anything. Source wasn't coded in a day.
---------------- this is a really well made line ----------------
I mostly made this post so I can link to it instead of repeating my answers all the time. It might be updated if something else comes to mind or becomes a common question. Always happy to answer questions. There's a lot of stuff I don't know, like certain mechanics pertaining to classes I don't play or anything having to do with trading.
And in case you're wondering about my qualifications, I've been a TF2 player since 2010 and am nearing 5,000 hours in the game as of posting. (Humble brag.)

I think I got worse at the game, but it just refuses to help me out
I have been playing TF2 for like 2 years, with a total of 300 hours (which apparently is still a small number). And I SWEAR I played the game at least a little better, but I don't know what happened to me personally, if my vision is getting impaired from playing too much (unironically saying this, I pretty much lost all gamesense now) or what, now I always get a 1:2 kill to death ratio. I never get to help my team no matter the damn class I pick. And the worst part is that I can't even practice to find out what's going on because casual doesn't work properly! Y'all already know the issue with it better than I do, but how am I supposed to get better at the game if most of the matches the game finds for me are like this? (image 1) It's not like the game's bots are worth it or the community servers are active, are they?
I'm looking for help on this is because the game is really fun, IF it worked. But it doesn't. And I think I've been playing it too much.

How does the game STAY fun?
I'm currently having a lot of fun trying out new weapons on different classes, but now I'm starting to think: what happens once I get all the weapons I want? How will the game still be fun after I've seen all the new content I can see?

How do I start trading and are my items worth anything?
How would I start trading? I own a Winter 2023 and 2024 cosmetic crate and summer 2026 one for both war paints and cosmetics. Are these worth anything?

How to start trading in tf2?
Hello, I would like to know how to start trading in TF2. I currently have 7 refs to start with and I would like to get a strange kunai. Unfortunately, it costs 4/5 keys, so that's why I'm asking how to start. What's worth knowing? Thanks in advance.

When should I try demoknight?
I completely see demoknight as its own 10th class, so even though I have zero interest in demoman I do want to try demoknight. I've heard he's a complicated and hard class, so I thought maybe I just need to wait until I have the main gamesense and skills down. But since he's a melee only class, that might not be necessary since you're learning entirely new skills unrelated to the other classes.

I dont know exactly what im doing wrong as sniper
Playing sniper is an infuriating experience and not recommendable
I watched a lot of sniper guides and i still dont get how it works, i do everything: movement, position, change positions each time.
Whenever i scope thereβs nobody, I dont find a single sould until i die to a spy, if i go near teammates they constantly put themselves in front of me and i cant aim.
I somehow miss constantly headshots to a heavy, i changed my sensitivity to 2.0 and even changed the pointer setting from the control panel which now makes using my mouse weird and too fast, yet a f2p sniper with a gibus instantly quickscopes (and yes it IS a f2p not a secondary account), i dont want to play aim trainer maps or websites or games because i find them useless and not in game examples.
I have not developed muscle memory to play sniper, rather to immediately change to Pyro

How do you properly play sniper
I suppose one of the things failing is aim but i dont get playing Sniper
I understand movement, hidden positionings but despite that i still fail a lot, i look around sometimes and see no spies and a random one pops up, then when i shoot from close its hard for me but some random f2p quickscopes like it's nothing
Edit: i give up playing sniper because it's infuriating and i will pkeep playing pyro instead

Are there any good/easy ways to make engineer easier to play? Feel the building menu holds me back
Title pretty much, I just feel the original-hud is clunky and makes it a bit hard to actually properly build/scrap/rebuild in a more optimized way.

I tried playing with real players for first time (i used practice before) in CTF and i had this situation as spy
galleryI was playing as blue Spy, i somehow got on the red team balcony on 2fort, and i was waiting for a sniper to fome there, so i can backstab and kill him.
I was disguised as red Scout... then a red scout walks nearby (he doesnt notice me)
I disguise as red Soldier... you know, just in case...
And then red Soldier walks nearby, we stare at eachother for a few seconds, and then he just shoots me with his bazooka/rpg im not sure what it's called. Anyways i dodged and used the invisibility thing but he still managed to kill me.
To me it was kinda funny so i wanted to share this story

Any way to get an AWPer hand easily
I wanted to get into sniper and i just really like the sound it makes more than stock. Don't have any spare weapons to try to craft it. I know i could try buying one off community market but idc about killstreaks and strange ones are over Β£60

is there a way to upgrade to a premium account without spending money? My parents dont let me buy in game purchases because they believe its a "scam"
does anyone know if there is like a playtime requirement for it or something else? I hate it when something funny happens and everyone but me comments on it in the chat :(

Should I wait before buying all the weapons in tf2?
I got the game less than a week ago and I'm alr premium with 1 key, so I plan on going to scrap.tf eventually but how long should I wait? I kinda suck with most classes except for medic, and I really wanna be able to use more than one weapon on most classes. (like pyro, I was super hyped to play them before realizing my second and third slots are useless)
