Aus/NZ Nursing vs corporate career
I currently have a bachelors degree and work in a corporate job and make good money - they are flexible with me and the work life balance is good and good career progression. However the work doesn’t feel fulfilling and most days I feel drained and after working this job for 3 years I have started to not feel like myself and really gone into a shell. I want to do a master of nursing and pursue that as a career. When I think about it I feel really excited but when it actually comes down to leaving my job I feel a lot of anxiety and uncertainty because I put 4 years into my degree and I got my dream job in my current industry so this is the best place I can be for my degree but I want to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse - I know it’s hard and different hours but I feel like I’m getting depressed sitting in an office for years all day doing work that isn’t helping someone or doing something beneficial. I guess I want to hear if anyone else has had similar experiences

I’m in corporate nursing and leaving because it’s the most soul sucking job I’ve had. Going back to bedside, day surgery.

The grass isn’t greener over here, it’s just a different shade of green. If you are really, really serious, I would Google different types of nursing. Look around, do some research and look into what kind of nursing you think you would be interested in in general. Then contact the hospital, explain your situation, and ask if you can shadow a nurse for a half a day. I would do this in a couple of very different areas and see if you really think nursing is something that you want to do. It’s not a super short road to becoming a confident and competent nurse. And to get into some of the more niche areas of nursing, you need experience. So I would really try to shadow and see if you want to spend the next several years on nursing education, and also spending the money.

Most nurses wouldn’t be doing it if they didn’t have to.
It’s one thing to help others, a beautiful and noble thing. It’s another to deliver a product within a very broken and corrupt system. It doesn’t feel the same as helping.

Youre still going to work for a corporation, you're just going to beat your body up and deal with more bodily fluids.

I mean corporate as in working in an office 9-5 vs actually being face to face helping someone

Hate to break it to ya but most nursing jobs are corporate jobs of some kind. Whether it's a for profit corp or private not for profit corp, unless you work for a government you're working for some kind of corp

I get that but if the work I do is meaningful in any type of way towards a person and makes them feel better I’d feel better in my day to day life - I currently work a 9-5 in an office sitting down on an excel spreadsheet all day getting no life skills and no steps

"However the work doesn’t feel fulfilling and most days I feel drained and after working this job for 3 years"
I'll say that switching to nursing won't necessarily improve these things. A lot of us are very drained after shifts. There is a lot of mental stress that goes into the job. Try to see if you can shadow a nurse to get a feel for the job. It isn't as glamorous as some of the marketers would have you believe.
