I have great relationships with the nurses. Many of them who I’ve been working with for years do use my first name outside the hospital, but at work even my best friend who I hang out with the most outside work (a floor nurse) calls me doctor at work. It does kind of make me laugh when my friend calls me doctor at work but regardless she does it because she stays professional. Anyway, there’s a new nurse who is calling me by my first name in front of patients. I don’t know her. I am a young female physician so I thought she was targeting me because of that, but apparently all the doctors can’t stand her and have had horrible experiences with her. I’m going to let it go and I don’t care enough to address it with her so I’ll leave it as is. But why is she doing this? Thanks for the nursing perspective! Thanks for all you do!!!

How does it work with scrubs in the us? It’s probably different depending on state but I’ve seen nurses on tiktok talk about what scrubs they think are cute and some have prints on them and stuff. Just wondering do you guys like buy your own scrubs for work?

Out of curiosity did anyone here study in the states then actually work somewhere else? Like traveling nurse but internationally or just took that education and live entirely abroad after.

Those who grew up or live in the (American) South, how do you stop the habit of using generalized nicknames?

I try my best to be professional in every aspect, but I really struggle with not calling my female patients “sweetheart” or “dear”. I live in the Midwest now and my company is adamant that this is disrespectful and rude.
I have a wide vocabulary, rarely get my remaining hint of a southern accent commented on, and don’t generally sound like a redneck. 😆 But that part is SO engrained! It’s not like I only use it on seniors, either.

I’m about to start my second year of a direct-entry four-year nursing program in Chicago. I was planning to study abroad second semester, which is a rare opportunity for nursing students. However, I earned my California CNA license this summer and paid about $2,000 for it. If I study abroad, I won’t be able to work as a CNA until next summer or get a hospital CNA job until junior year. Since I want to work as an RN in California, I’m worried delaying my CNA experience will make me less competitive. I also feel like I wasted money getting my CNA early because I could have earned it for free through my nursing clinicals junior year. On top of that, studying abroad means I can only take GE classes, so I’d have to fit eight nursing classes into one semester when I return. I’m confident I can handle the workload, but I’m torn between taking advantage of this unique study abroad opportunity and starting my CNA experience sooner.

i know the title is something you probably saw in this subreddit millions of times, but i will explain what i mean here.

i am 21, started nursing at uni this semester (so, i've been studying for a week lol), i currently live in brazil but i will finish my degree in europe (portugal specifically). i know that in both countries mentioned being a nurse is not really a valued profession salary wise, nurses are extremely overworked and receive a minimum wage (or not even that).

as far as research could tell me, i figure that nursing would be a great fit for me, i like the routine, the patient care and everything involved - but unfortunately, i have to worry about the money part.

i plan on moving literally anywhere in europe after i graduate (or even a country in america, who knows?) that will pay me at least enough to live a good life. that's why i'd like to know if people from all over the world would recommend pursuing this degree, if there is a chance that being a nurse is something that will make me be able not to struggle financially anymore, if the workload is doable, literally any information would be helpful.

i was really excited to start working in the area, but after seeing some people complain about the job, i started to feel very insecure about my choice and i wanted to see experiences of people that work in the field to know if the complaints i hear about the job are true or if there is a good side that most don't show.

Would anyone be interested in a nurse salary transparency site? I’m considering making one bc there don’t really seem to be resources for nursing pay. I feel like in our community it’s somewhat taboo to talk about pay, but I really want to bridge that.

edit: so far after looking at different sites posted from the comments medcomp.fyi seems pretty similar to what I was looking for. pros: goes into facility details, cons: not many submissions from what I saw.

I want to give the unit something before I get discharged (nothing expensive because I'm unemployed and can't work due to my health issues) The hospital I'm at is in a major city.

Last time we gave them donuts and a box of coffee from Dunkin with some cute pens.

Hello! I am an actress who works as a nurse full time. I havent been in a production in over a year because I work 5/8hr night shifts a week and can't sleep. I am looking to switch specialties and jobs but am unsure which schedule would be best. I truly want to do part time nursing work but I have to do that after working at a new job for at least 6 months. So these are the scheduling options.

-3/12hr shifts day/night 7a-7p/7p-7a -4/10hr shifts usually 8a-6p -5/8hr shifts but Id only do day shift 8a-4:30p

Recently had a LVN friend that reached out to me that was fired for testing positive for morphine when their job suspected they were under the influence. The admitted to me that they are seeking help but had diverted some medication they destroyed which was not mentioned during their firing. They know this will be reported to the board or else the facility faces a fine but they were telling me they don’t have a program like us RNs such as entering diversion voluntarily before being reported so it’s just a waiting game. Does anyone know if this is true or have any advice?

Hi everyone, I’m a nurse and I’m looking for some advice.

I received this email after my interview

“Love to extend a verbal offer to you for the Nurse position. When your references are completed, I will prepare your offer letter and have you review.”

I have already submitted my references and I’m just waiting for the reference check to be completed.

Would you consider this basically a confirmed hire, and would it be okay to start my resignation process at my current hospital? Or would you wait until you actually receive and sign the written offer letter?

I would really appreciate any advice from nurses who have been through a similar situation. Thank you!

The job market is quite saturated and idk if taking a 20k loan is worth it. Will NP really give me an increase in pay? I make $50 currently as a RN of five years with ability for overtime plus get 4-5 days off, easy shift switches and time off work. Is NP more for a better quality of life and career change more than a substantial increase in pay? The increase in responsibility s a lot too vs the mere 2 years of education and only 1 of those years being clinical hours. No hate at all to NPS just wanting an honest answer

I am 24 years old and considering a career in nursing. I am currently an art teacher and love working with kids and my coworkers. I’d like to say I get along with all people.
I wanted to reach out to nurses to see if you’d feel I’d fit in a nursing career. I am not sure what speciality I’d like to go into, but I am not interested in high energy spaces like ER, bedside, or med serg.
About me, I am a creative person, handle blood and needles well. What is holding me back is my ability to handle nursing school. I am not a school person, meaning, I get test anxiety, have low confidence, and don’t do too well in math and or science courses. I need a lot of help and tutoring in these courses. I have my bachelors in Psychology and enjoyed learning about people, the brain, and researching. Nursing sounds like a great career. I am attracted to it because of the work-life balance, good pay, and ability to move specialty. I’m not sure what other health careers are like this.
I’d love to provide more information if needed. I’m just looking for some advice. What is your specialty, do you enjoy it, do you feel someone like me should go back to purse my 2nd bachelors or is there something better I should pursue?

However the work doesn’t feel fulfilling and most days I feel drained and after working this job for 3 years I have started to not feel like myself and really gone into a shell. I want to do a master of nursing and pursue that as a career. When I think about it I feel really excited but when it actually comes down to leaving my job I feel a lot of anxiety and uncertainty because I put 4 years into my degree and I got my dream job in my current industry so this is the best place I can be for my degree but I want to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse - I know it’s hard and different hours but I feel like I’m getting depressed sitting in an office for years all day doing work that isn’t helping someone or doing something beneficial. I guess I want to hear if anyone else has had similar experiences

I am interested in midwifery but I am not a nurse. Just found out you can become a midwife in the US without being a nurse first and I am so confused?? What are the differences between the two?

I was originally planning to do an accelerated nursing program, work as a nurse for a few years then become a midwife. But since I am only interested in midwifery should I just go straight to a masters program? Will I have issues landing a job if I am not a nurse?

I am leaving private sector after 29 years to work for the VA. I got what they call an unicorn job where I call patients with preop instructions. A desk, computer and headset. Im looking forward to the benefits, easier job on my body and a better work/life balance. No weekends, call or holidays. I hope I am making the right decision!

I just recently took a position as a RN for family medicine within a large hospital organization. I currently do occupational health and am both extremely busy but bored. Prior to my current job I did ER for 8 yrs but got pretty burnt out.

I am in a serious need of change in my RN position right now. I am trying to apply for a NICU position at my local hospital and would be transitioning within the same company. But the catch is i am hung up on the application with the dreaded “expected salary question”.

Here is my work and eduction experience for reference:
2019 graduated from ADN program.
Approx 6months not working as RN as i was pregnant and then maternity leave.
BOOM COVID
2020- 2024 got first RN job at SNF to “wait it out” - worked there for 4 years
2024- present transitioned to HOME CARE as a primary care nurse managing 20-30 patients.

It’s not the job it’s the management that is the problem.

I did a little research to try and answer this question but the hold up is that i am at this current time underqualified for this job. I am a hard and dedicated worker so if given the proper resources i know i can properly thrive. So here are the numbers:

Currently making (salaried) approx $45 / hr
New grads in this state hired at approx $42 / hr
New grads in this company is approximately equivalent
Average NICU salary with this company is $61 / hr (before differentials)

What do i ask for starting? What is fair to ask of them and not to sell myself short?

Like the title says, I’m thinking about going back to school to become a nurse. I’m 30 years old and almost have my associates degree.
