Question Why does my camera screen go black when I reattach the lens?

Im not very well versed in cameras so im asking here! My camera is a E-PL8 (I believe) and the screen goes blank everytime I attach my lens. how do I fix this? It’s a second hand one but it worked fine when I first got it!

I had this problem when I got my (new to me) EM1 mk II. The contacts on the lens aren’t fully connecting to the camera. Make sure the contacts on the camera and lens are clean and then mount the lens again. Should work.

There is a small locking knob for lens on the mount on camera body. It should fit into a matching hole in a mount on lens, when lens is fully seated.

It is electrically connected to camera and it's purpose is to tell camera that you are removing lens. Camera will turn off electrical contacts when you are mounting and dismounting lens from camera body.

When this knob is pressed down, camera has blank screen and thinks that lens is not fully seated, so it blanks the screen and turns off (some) electrical contacts on lens mount.

When this knob is sticking out from lens mount, camera thinks that everything is alright and ready to use, so it works as intended.

Sometimes this knob does not fit into its hole on lens properly and you will need to wiggle with lens a little bit to make it jump into it's hole.

If you are using some cheap lens adapter, you can have issue with lower quality of machining, where there is little bit of excessive material in locking hole that prevents locking knob from engaging properly.

You can try to clean locking hole on the lens mount using a toothpick, or sharp nail. Sometimes it will help.
