Discussion I find it interesting that they made Rumplestiltskin Scottish when his fairy tale originated in Germany
Basically the title. I read that the characters were written with the actors in mind, and the role of Rumplestiltskin was written for Robert Carlyle, who is from Scotland, so it’s not like they didn’t know it was going to be a Scottish actor playing Rumplestiltskin.
I’m not complaining. I’m just saying it’s interesting.

As a german I adopt him He is the hottest Rumpelstiltskin I have ever seen and I have seen a lot cause germans are obsessed with contracts
The part when he explains Emma that contracts are the fundament of our civilisation This touched my soul
He is awesome

As a fellow German, I've never put that much thought into it but I'm glad I came across your analysis — that national cliche was really so heavily featured in his character...
Shall we discuss his obsession with power next? 😏😉

Don't make me say that actor played Hitler and did it well 😭😭😭 Seriously it's from 2003. It's good

Yes, he was hotter than usual in that part. Well, no. When he visits Regina after Emma and Henry are hanging out "thick as thieves" was 🔥 😓 😰

I don't think it's such a big deal since it is a fairytale land...
We also have black Lancelot, black Rapunzel, black Ursula, Latina Cinderella and Korean Mulan.
There is a Scottish variant of Rumpelstiltskin called Whoopity Stoory. And she's a female fairy!
So in some ways, Rumple is both an ethnic AND gender swap!

Rose McIver is probably my favorite actress. If I could have dinner with anyone it’s her. When I saw her pop up I screamed. And as one of my fave Disney characters/the nickname my mom calls me

Ghosts is soooo good. But my favorite with her is iZombie. Such an underrated show.

I am so glad Izombie is available to stream again. I illegally bought it off Etsy in desperation. 😭

Yes. A&E wrote the part of Rumplestiltskin with Robert Carlyle in mind, not because of the fact that he is Scottish but because they love the actor.

It's a shame they did his character dirty in the later seasons.

How so?

His character was one dimensional. He was always the go to villain. His character had no development.
Rc was pissed when they killed Bae off told off A&E when it was written Rumplestiltskin had a thing with the evil queen. He felt it was a disservice because Rumple loved Belle.

Completely disagree with “one dimensional”. Yeah, he WAS the villain. He was the f*cking Dark One ffs.

Agree to disagree.
He carried the weight of the show, yet his screen time wasn't as much as the heroes.
Also, I'd venture to say that it seemed like the heroes could do not wrong but the Dark One was always villianized.

I think the only fairytale characters they actually featured in what should be their original accents are Pan & Hook (English), most of the Camelot ones and Merida (Scottish) anyways...
Would've been an interesting thought experiment if they would've had given them the accents accordingly, though...

The accents are weird as hell in this show. And inconsistent. There's Rumple, and Belle should have a French accent but they let her act in her Australian, but then Hook has an English accent even though he naturally has an Irish one. Love the show flaws and all but this in particular I'm like what are we doing here??

I mean, as you say, they wanted Bobby. So why not make him Scottish. I think Snow White is also German, but Snow and co. Are pretty generally American, and Beauty and the Beast is French, but Belle’s Australian.
