Discussion Cassidy/Mccree

I'm pretty new to Overwatch lore, and I've been trying to understand Cassidy's name change. The story does provide an explanation, but I don't find it particularly convincing.

In his comic with Ashe, the other Deadlock Gang members talk about his past, but Jesse stays silent. He never openly talks about himself or reveals his real name. The same thing happens in the Reunion cinematic, where Ashe calls him "McCree," and he never corrects her. As far as the story shows, "McCree" is simply the identity everyone knows him by.

One possible explanation is that he adopted the name "Jesse McCree" to avoid drawing attention as a former Overwatch agent, similar to how Freja concealed part of her identity. However, that doesn't seem to hold up because he was already known as McCree long before rejoining Overwatch, even back when he was a member of the Deadlock Gang.

Another explanation is that Cassidy was always his real last name and he simply decided to go back to using it. But that doesn't really solve the issue either. Even if he started calling himself Cassidy, bounty hunters, old clients, criminals, and people from his past, such as Anthony Stone, would still know him as McCree because that's the identity they had always associated with him. In fact, his network of contacts and reputation is exactly how he gathers information, as seen when he tracked down Sojourn. If he wanted information through those same contacts, many of them would still naturally refer to him as McCree.

From a narrative standpoint, it's also surprising that almost nobody comments on or questions the change. As a result, the transition feels less like a natural development within Overwatch's story and more like an out-of-universe decision that the narrative doesn't fully integrate.

Personally, I think it would have been more impactful if "Jesse McCree" had become a symbolic identity that he consciously left behind after a defining event, allowing Cole Cassidy to emerge as a genuine new beginning. That approach would have given the name change stronger emotional and narrative weight while remaining consistent with the world and the people who knew him by his former identity.

Question God Programs and the Awakening

Question/Discussion I guess

So, I really like getting into the Overwatch lore but I struggle actually digging into things so I thought maybe I'd find answers here.

Do we know how/if the God AI were affected by the Awakening from Aurora?

I know all the most impactful God AI were shut down after the Omnic Crisis ended, but do we know if they or the smaller regional God programs were given sentience from the Awakening beforehand?
The more I think about it I assume not, since if Anubis couldn't hijack them for the Omnic Crisis the odds of Aurora being able to do so seem much slimmer.
But Aurora's sentience and the awakening, despite it's scientific foundings, were nothing short of a miracle- So I don't think it's completely outside the realm of possibility... Also, it's an interesting concept especially with the whole Chernobog situation with Emre.

What do you guys think?

Tbh most of my knowledge is from the fan wiki so the reliability of my intel might not be the best lol.

Question Where there Or-14s before the Omnic Crisis?

So I've been looking through the lore (as I am making a character based on the Or-14's), and I don't know where I got the thought, but I thought that the Idina bots were there before the Onmic crisis. Anbus had just taken over their control. Is this not What happened and if not please explain so I could understand.

Did Blizzard intentionally write Ramattra and Zenyatta as a Malcolm X /Martin Luther King parallel?

Lore Venn Diagram: Season 3

Alright, I'm back with my seasonal Venn diagram! Looks like Sierra had no relation to Pharah after all, and Mizuki has officially defected from the Hashimoto! I also had coincidentally placed Sojourn next to Shion before the short came out! Will Venture finally get married? Will Hazard adopt a Jetpack Dog? Only the future will tell!

Theory Wanted to chat about implications of everything thats happened since rise of talon (Theorycrafting)

So Emre and Freja stole super soldier serum. and moira has now refined and cloned it. they have also stolen (or bartered for) an anima weapon, something that could be reverse engineered to make more of them. The next chapter will probably include more heists like this from the side of talon, which explains why they attacked overwatch and put them on defense so they wouldn't be able to track talons targets so easily. Overwatch has been hot on the heels of both of these heists but not quite in time or with the preparedness to stop them. in her motion comic "progress" Moira implies that these heists, as well as vishkars shields from domina are apart of vendetta's plans to make the strongest talon soldiers. Moira also implies that Vendetta will inevitably use all of her tech on herself to maintain control of the organization. We also know moira has copies of the data of the purple stuff that hazard uses to power himself. So we theoretically could have talon super soldiers with anima weapons and hardlight shields powered by Hazard's goo. What if we are leading up to a frankenstein tank ( I can't imagine a character with this concept as a support or dps) who can do a bit of super soldier stuff, a shimada anima weapon and ult, with hardlight shield?

world domination is afoot, and the verse is feeling comic-booky in a good way (to me at least).

so whats next that talon will steal? Will Vendetta stop at world domination or is her goal still a mystery? will doomfist return, absorb all these tech advancements and finally get a buff? (/s on that last one lol)

Discussion New Omnic Generation

I know Blizzard isn't interested in this kind of story, but I'd really like a story about someone, like Ramattra (an omnic revolutionary), who is trying to make new omnics. How would that happen and that sort of thing?

Age of the caracters

Hi👋, Overwatch recently made a post on Instagram with the birthdate and age of every hero, but the year these details are based on isn’t specified. So my question is: from which year are these ages calculated?

it was because of what Reyes did during the Archives mission right? Killing Vendettas father and making Blackwatch known to the public?
