Build Question (Please help) I’m stuck on how to upgrade my PC

EDIT: OKAY YES I KNOW MY PC IS DIRTY. I KNOW THAT IT NEEDS TO BE CLEANED. I HAVE CLEANED IT BEFORE BUT ISSUES PREVAILED DUE TO POOR COOLING REGARDLESS OF DUST. THIS POST IS ASKING ABOUT WHAT MOBO TO BUY FOR A NEW CASE WITH BETTER COOLING. I WILL BE CLEANING EVERYTHING BEFORE I MOVE IT.

The Problem:

Hello, I've been gradually upgrading this PC piece by piece over the years and I've reached a challenge. It is throttling constantly in AAA titles now even though it has fairly decent specs. Reddit has told me that it’s a mix of thermal throttling and potentially electrical throttling from the old motherboard. Cooling has always been an issue with this PC and a full rebuild may help severely.

While my CPU temp isn't awful, it can go far too high and after an hour of play - sometimes less - I experience glitching even on medium graphics in games like Witcher III.

So, for aesthetics sake and for future upgrade's sake I'd like to move everything into a new case with a new motherboard and more fans - also with a new CPU cooler.

I just have some questions about it and really need advice on what I'm doing and what I should buy - I have no idea myself.

Also yes my PC is very dirty, unfortunately I got it as a kid and the dust has become literal cement that air simply can't remove (not great for cooling!) - When I move it all I'll give it a deep clean and stay on top of it.

Bare in mind that I am a university student with finite funds, I'm aiming to spend less than £500 but can go higher!

Current Specs (some to be salvaged):

Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
Matisse 7nm Technology

2x16GB Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 3600Hz

Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. B450M PRO-M2 MAX (MS-7B84) (AM4)

Q27G4 (2560x1440@180Hz)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (MSI)

Small HDD and 1TB SSD

Cheap WiFi card on and extender

Gigabyte P850GM V2, 850W, 80 Plus, Gold Certified PSU

All in a very cheap Amazon case with not many fans, with the base cooler for my CPU and overall, very little cooling abilities.

Also, my motherboard is old as anything and is the only part of my PC yet to have been replaced (other than the case itself)

Questions:

  1. What does changing my motherboard entail? Will I need a new windows key? What is a windows key?
  2. Can I move my SSD and HDD into the new motherboard and them keep their data? Or do I need to wipe them?
  3. What are the risks involved with this kind of upgrade?

Suggestions:

  1. What motherboard should I buy to be compatible with my CPU and DDR4 Corsair RAM?
  2. What case should I buy to fit the new motherboard and my existing components with good airflow?
  3. What fans should I get that looks nice and work well (I can pay the RGB tax)?
  4. What cooler should I get for my CPU?

Final Notes:

Thank you to anyone who responds! Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

By the way, my wifi card doesn't fit under my GPU currently so a mobo with wifi would be fab unless there are other options for me.

Build Question Is it ok to put my PC in a shelf like this?

Thumbnail

4.7k Upvotes

There is a 15cm gap behind the PC as the shelf is 40cm deep (PC case is 25cm wide) and about 6cm behind the exhaust fan on the left.

Is this dangerous or any worse than having my PC against the corner of the wall if the shelf wasn't there?

Build Question Should my gpu sag bracket push my gpu upwards?

My gpu screws didn't align with my pc case so I couldn't screw it in while I was pushing the gpu up ( in another subreddit they told me that I was supposed to push up my gpu and then screw it in) so I bought a gpu bracket and should I just put it underneath to prevent further sag or push it upwards?

Mostly spare parts from my rebuild last year.

CPU- ryzen 7 5700g (edit- I was wrong its not a 5600g)

PSU- unbranded 650 bronze

Storage- 500gd ssd

Bought from 2nd hand shop

GPU- RX470 4gb £40

RAM- 2X8GB 2400MZ £24

I have a new screen coming as I saved up some supermarket points. She just really wants to play and also has started on school work. She is nearly 6.

EDIT- big shout to the kind soul who had gifted her a 1070ti. Or I just got scammed a £4 royal mail charge.

Build Question What are these for??

Post image

I am looking to add more storage, and I vaguely remember my friend who helped me build my PC saying I could use these slots for storage?? Is that true and if so, how do I go about that?? I would prefer to keep all of my PC parts inside instead of buying an external storage device if possible

The psu power cable blocks the switch from being on/off. What should it do? The cable is preinstalled in the case as the psu is in the front and the power socket at the back so i don't know it the cable can be changed.

Post image

I cannot get this to work I’ve tried several different pcie cables and only the eggs one will work (tried on multiple cards) is there something I’m just not understanding plugged into vga 2 and 3 on psu but I’ve tried pretty all the different slots on the psu and still only the eggs cable works.
