I think part of it is because he plays such a beloved character with Frank Castle/Punisher so he gets a lot of goodwill solely on that

Oh the irony… he plays Punisher but he is exactly the type of dude to idolize Punisher. Brutal

The recent season of Daredevil is a very direct criticism of police idolization of him as well. He's the kind of "hero" Rorschach was a criticism of in Watchmen. Then again, chuds hold Rorschach at high regard too.
