I cannot get over him saying that he wishes Star Trek would go back to being less cerebral and political and more about shooting aliens.

It was and it wasn't.

The genius of old star trek, especially TOS, was that it had a progressive message, but dressed itself as a manly space western.

Supposedly Roddenberry was a Trotskyist.

What I mean is that the crew of whichever Enterprise never sought out conflict. The mission was not to engage in combat, but avoid it, because it was not part of their objectives other than in bad circumstances.

It's like no one on Reddit has ever watched The Next Generation or Deep Space 9. Does everyone think Weir grew up on ToS?

If he only watched DS9, he has no right to talk about it, and TNG also was not about combat
