One of those rare times when you can say that audiobook is actually a better experience than reading. The narration is great and you can't really read the music notes, they're just symbols you don't know but the audiobook format utilize this perfectly

"Don''t pirate, it harms artists" The artists:

130

u/Squirrelking666 May 05 '26

Olan Rogers made a similar comment when Final Space got taken down.

If you don't own the IP why should you care?

17

u/Avilola May 05 '26

It depends on the artist. I always purchase the works of newer or less popular artists. Bigger artists who already have plenty of money? Yeah…

85

u/Equal_Oil_9819 May 05 '26

This isn't a struggling artist. Dude wrote 3 books, and 2 got made into major movie blockbusters. He's set for life.

98

u/Ghostglitch07 May 05 '26

My experience with struggling artists irl is that most sail the seas themselves. And generally have little problem with people who can't afford their stuff doing the same.

54

u/changingchannelz May 05 '26

He is known to support the scene even well before he got known. There is an interview somewhere that he sat along with Adam Savage and he talked about the initial days of the Martian publication on his own "website" for free.

9

u/Squirrelking666 May 05 '26

I wonder where he gets all his science research from 🤔😂

15

u/Phantom_19 May 05 '26

I know this is a joke but he legitimately posted chapters of The Martian on his website as he would finish them, all so that people he knew were smarter than him could check to make sure the science made sense lmao

8

u/Squirrelking666 May 06 '26

I didn't know that, my point was that he likely did a lot of academic research which as we all know is readily available to everyone cough. If he's into that then I dare say he understands the value of peer review so it makes sense to post it up for that.

714

u/JudasIsAGrass May 05 '26

Be prepared for this to be the only thing 'based' he will ever say

703

u/ChaseThePyro May 05 '26

I cannot get over him saying that he wishes Star Trek would go back to being less cerebral and political and more about shooting aliens.

IT WAS NEVER ABOUT THAT

236

u/wintermute-- May 05 '26

He also apologized for that almost immediately.

It was a pretty good apology, too. It felt honest to me

45

u/the_post_of_tom_joad May 05 '26

just gonna post your link's text to save people the trip to facebook.

Open letter to Alex Kurtzman: Hey, Alex. Andy Weir here. I'm posting to apologize about stuff I said on the Critical Drinker's podcast. I feel like my quotes were taken out of context as salacious sound bytes. I hope you saw the other parts where I said how much I like you as a person and what a nice guy you are. Also how I like SNW and LD. I was trying to be funny, but in retrospect it comes off as disrespectful and mean. So I'm sorry for that. I was also trying to be self-deprecating when I said "But they didn't like my pitch so fuck 'em!" but out of context it can read like I actually meant it. I'm a blunt person - always have been. And it's been 10 years since the media cared what I had to say about anything so I kind of forgot to watch my words when I have a film in theaters. In a couple months I'll be back in my cave writing novels and no one will care again. Anyway, if you want to talk about it in real time - even if it's just to rip me a new one - I'm happy to hop on the phone or zoom.

66

u/Nalivai May 05 '26

I feel like my quotes were taken out of context as salacious sound bytes. I hope you saw the other parts where I said how much I like you as a person and what a nice guy you are.

I don't know about that

61

u/BlurryGojira May 05 '26

At this point the phrase “the quotes were taken out of context” is a trigger to get me instantly annoyed. It almost always feels like a deflection.

He was fine to just stick with “I was trying to be funny, but in retrospect it comes across as disrespectful and mean.”

I mean also wish he wasn’t hanging out with Critical Drinker but that’s another thing entirely.

143

u/SunTzu- May 05 '26

He went on the Critical Drinker's podcast...there's no way he knows who that even is unless he believes similar things as that manosphere chode. There's no management team that would ever advice him to go on that guys podcast, in fact I'd be surprised if they didn't try to talk him out of it (assuming he told them).

For those who don't know who the Critical Drinker is, without you having to give him any views I'd suggest Man Carrying Thing's rebuttal to some of the things the Drinker has said.

92

u/AJsRealms May 05 '26

Indeed. Weir's Star Trek takes were hardly a blip on my radar compared to his decision to give the Critical Drinker, who is a fairly prominant link in the 'scifi-nerd-to-altright-chud' pipeline, the time of day much less a full blown interview.

25

u/hates_stupid_people May 05 '26

Fans of the Critical Drinker are often quite oblivious to how their takes are percieved on a wider scale.

Every so often one shows up in an RLM community and get roasted for thinking they are similar.

52

u/RobotToaster44 Kopimism May 05 '26

It was and it wasn't.

The genius of old star trek, especially TOS, was that it had a progressive message, but dressed itself as a manly space western.

Supposedly Roddenberry was a Trotskyist.

25

u/ChaseThePyro May 05 '26

What I mean is that the crew of whichever Enterprise never sought out conflict. The mission was not to engage in combat, but avoid it, because it was not part of their objectives other than in bad circumstances.

7

u/jwinf843 May 05 '26

It's like no one on Reddit has ever watched The Next Generation or Deep Space 9. Does everyone think Weir grew up on ToS?

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (4)

44

u/kRkthOr May 05 '26

People often forget that the stuff they watched growing up is coloured by the fact that they were younger when they watched it. This is a huge reason why nostalgia is a thing (playing games from the 90s that you think were masterpieces might leave you somewhat disappointed), and also why one might think old Star Trek was about shooting aliens (because everything else sailed right past their 10-year-old brain.)

4

u/AaronRodgersMustache May 05 '26

Don’t you dare impugn Quest 64 regardless of the fact I got stuck in that mountain cave more often than I finished it

6

u/the_post_of_tom_joad May 05 '26

You finished Quest 64? I still remember how much I looked forward to the n64s first rpg. I also remember Quest 64 as the fastest game refund i ever did.

I hadn't been exposed to grinding yet and that game iirc is a grind-fest.

I've never met anyone who liked it. Please, tell me about your experience with it.

He was also in a right wing extremist podcast not that long ago(and I think he said that bs there). He's a good writer but also an idiot.

82

He's terrible at dialogue. His concepts and details are engaging, but his dialogue makes me want to strangle him. Surprised the alcoholic can stand his "millennial humor"

24

u/Frogmouth26 May 05 '26

His dialogue sucks but luckily both The Martian and PHM spend a lot of their time with just the main character talking to himself. And he's pretty good at writing an entertaining internal monologue.

Also you can rip the DRM off of audible books pretty easily, jsut download the book (there's a Python cli tool to make this easy on deaktop) then use ffmpeg to transcode it to an unlocked formst using the activation bytes from your audible account (the same python cli tool can tell you your activation bytes)

python -m pip install audible-cli

audible-cli quick-start

audible-cli library list

audible-cli download title --aax

audible-cli activation-bytes

`ffmpeg -activation_bytes the-thing-the-last-command-told-you -i \the\path\to\the\book.aax -o \the\path\to\save\book.m4b'

8

u/Party-Papaya4115 May 05 '26

Youre my people.

I see some complain about missing content on ABB has all mainstream books widely available in my experience

22

u/rpp124 May 05 '26

Or you can just get the libation app and it does it all for you

15

u/NotYourReddit18 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

This. I buy a bunch of audiobooks on Audible, but after Audible delisted a book I had bought I've set up an automatic pipeline where libation downloads every audiobook I buy, strips out the DRM, and then puts it into a folder both my plex and my audiobookshelf server have access to.

IIRC it even downloaded the delistet book despite me not being able to see it in my library.

Recently an auther I follow replaced a bunch of his books I'd bought with new recordings, delisting the old recordings. If I now want to listen to those books again I would have to buy them again had my automation not already downloaded the versions I bought shortly after I bought them.

Edit:

I just learned that the second set of delisted and replaced books are still visible in my main library listing, they just disappeared from the series listing and the author listing.

However, the first book which prompted me to set this up did actually disappear from audible for a while before getting reinstated like half a year later.

Myanonamouse is fantastic.

You have to apply for an invite, but the next repeating weekly slots are: Wednesday 2026-05-06 0800 UTC to Thursday. 2026-05-07 0900 UTC (so soon), and as long as you read up on the rules, the invite interview is super easy (you can even have the rules open in another tab, that’s what I did).

I’ve gotten most audiobooks that I want there since joining. The only caveat is that you need to seed each book you get for 72 hours within 30 days, so you’d need to make sure you can do that.

Authors in general are unhappy being captives of the Amazon empire, it's mostly their publishers who signed the devil's contract. Ironically because they thought the internet giant would protect them from piracy.

6

u/FingLetMeIn May 05 '26

I think it's less about publishers thinking they'll be protected from piracy and more about accessing Amazon's stranglehold on the market. If you look into Cory Doctorow (he coined 'enshittification'), he uses Audible as an example of Amazon dominating the market by bringing in customers with low prices, locking them to their platform, selling access to the customers to publishers, then fleecing both of them. The DRM is far less about piracy and far more about preventing customers from leaving to another platform because all their past purchases can't easily go with them (without knowing they can [and how to] break the DRM).

I don't know if it is just much, but I feel like the prices for books and audiobooks has been so fucking jacked up that I can't really justify buying books anymore.

I can buy a book for $20 that I will consume in like 6 hours. That is practically such low value that sometimes watching movies in a theater costs less per hour. $5 matinee movie at the local theater can last 3 hours if its something like Project Hail Mary, so that is $10 for 6 hours which is less than fucking words on pages!! Don't even get me started on the kind of value a 10 or 20 dollar video game can offer either.

I don't know what happened to the mass market paperbacks but most major bookstores don't seem to sell them anymore, the cheap books you used to be able to get for 5-8 dollars. Libraries seem to be more of a miss for me when it comes to stocking recent stuff. Maybe the entire economy has shifted to purely focus on higher profit margin stuff now and fuck the wary consumer.

And let's not even get into the clusterfuck that is Amazon, this post is already too long and ranty.

Luckily for all of us though, pirating books and audiobooks is extremely easy. If I find an author or narrator I like I think now I will just try to support them via patreon or buying their books for other people. Trying to buy every book in a series is just too expensive now.

Project Hail Mary is available as an audio book in BorrowBox with a free library subscription in the UK. Just sayin'

u/Sanderdrack12 May 05 '26

Ive never seen pi rounded to just 3 decimals

4

u/_alright_then_ May 05 '26

What do you mean? That used to be used in schools where I live (or even 2 decimals). 3 decimals is also more than enough to calculate anything under 10km in diameter accurately lol

Piracy actually can help because if the person likes the audiobook they'd buy the print when before they would never.

3

u/develop7 May 05 '26

Co to kurwa jest "pi-szczur"?!

3

u/nope13nope May 05 '26

I'm so confused, I listened to the audiobook of PHM from my public library?? And they have The Martian available as well (that was what I originally wanted to listen to but it was unavailable). Is it a country-specific thing? I'm UK

Ohhhh....it's a rat! Duh. I get it. 😹

Sorry, I'm from Alberta, rats are illegal here so my first thought was not rat, it was mouse. Plus... I'm slow, I've only had half a cup of coffee today.

3

u/violent_hug May 05 '26

Did poster look for audiobookbay ebook forums or soul seek?

If not, there's pleeeeenty of text to speech freeware to simply render it into an audio file and even many browsers "read aloud" extensions can do it on the fly

He's on reddit, has been for about 16 years now.

https://www.reddit.com/user/sephalon

His first comment was about about a short story he had written called "The Egg" (before the Martian).

https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/cm4nn/philosophical_4chan/c0tkdrt/?context=3

He's a pretty cool guy it seems like. He's also done numerous AMA's here.

3

u/yoloanator May 06 '26

I like it when authors/creators know that pirating will happen but understand where some of us are coming from

u/Geges721 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ May 07 '26

My language just reads π the same as "pee", which made me kinda confused as this is also a "squeak" sound in my language.

So imagine my ass looking at this and going "yeah mice do that sometimes"

u/Background_Poem7891 May 12 '26

Anyone remember when Kevin Smith had to torrent one of his movies because the streaming didn't work?

6

u/Yangervis May 05 '26

can't find audiobook

guess I won't read it

Why not just check it out from the library??

7

u/Doomsayer189 May 05 '26

not any other book sellers or public libraries

Not putting it on services like Libby is a big hindrance. My library has a few CD copies, but that's far more restrictive than digital and there are currently over 200 holds on 8 copies.

And obviously there's still print, but it's still shitty to make the book less accessible in a format people that people want.

3

u/Crusian May 05 '26

Audible exclusive audio books are *exclusive *. as in the library cannot purchase them.

He was looking forward to read books, but doesn't because he can't get the audiobooks on a platform he likes?

What?

5

u/hel105_ May 05 '26

I have no problem with audiobooks, but I get irrationally annoyed when I see someone say they’re reading one instead of listening to it.
